Advice on PHEV estate

Hi all,

So the father in law had a lend of our Optima PHEV Estate for a few days there while his old diesel car was getting fixed.

Well, he loved it. Loves the electric in town and how comfortable everything was on the motorway. He'd love to buy one brand new but they aren't available here and have been discontinued in the UK.

Basically, he wants an estate that is also PHEV. He does a lot of long weekends away golfing etc. Would like something big since he does take the kids at times too, so the things that sometimes you don't think about (charge points in the back, dual climate control etc) would be a bonus.

I was looking at the Mondeo with him as he suggested it, but apparently it's a bit sluggish and the battery distance isn't exactly great in real world scenarios.

Wondering if anyone has any suggestions?

If I was buying a phev I'd consider the Outlander PHEV if you wanted something relatively well priced, large etc. Alternatively the germans (BMW/Audi/Mercedes) do a number of PHEVs.

The BMW/Audi/Merc brands might be just out of reach for him. I've suggested the Superb but he is adamant that he won't drive an SUV type vehicle. A friend has an Outlander and loves it but the old man is set in his ways. Drove estates for years, loves them, and the switch to PHEV is surprising to be fair to him.

Then the passat GTE or superb phev would be good choices.

He should just get the Optima like yourself

Yeah he's not interested in importing and would prefer new. His current car is pretty old, he drives them into the ground. Like I said, set in his ways so the whole PHEV is a surprise.

Not an estate, its a mpv, nice big boot and its a little higher which would make it easier to get in and out of, not as long. Only 25 mile range on electric,

I'm moving back to Ireland from the US at the end of the year, so I'm on the lookout for an Estate PHEV as well for the family car. Thinking of the Passat GTE. Looks like a nice car.

For my commuter car at the moment I have the VW eGolf and I love it (would bring it home with me, but it's left hand drive). Don't think there are really any well priced family sized BEVs about at the moment, so the PHEV is the compromise for a few years until options become available in that segment. Optima PHEV looks very good too. Very good prices in the UK.

Just curious though how Brexit will affect importing when they fully leave? It will be January next year before I buy.

VAT on top of VRT and perhaps C&E/Import duty, no-one knows exactly but VAT for sure

I have Outlander now just around 12 months, love it. They are decent spec and great value from UK. You get 30km on battery and then petrol.

It is fairly decent on fuel after coming off the battery
