    Hi guys,

Sorry, I think I've asked about homemade dog food before but I can't find the thread. I've thought about it before but this week I started my two on homemade fare, which they love so far.

Generally around 60% meat, 10-20% brown rice, pasta or potatoes and the rest veg. The odd day they'll have egg, sardines or salmon.

I know I should be adding calcium and salmon oil or something. They get a little bone once every couple of weeks.

Can anyone recommend a particular supplement I can get that I just spoon in each day or once a week or whatever?

I've tried looking online but to be honest, I just get confused and a little worried in case I don't do it right.

If I were you I would check out Lily's Kitchen ingredients for their foods, I feel like it makes a pretty good guideline for people cooking from home. After all, Lily's Kitchen started out as a lady home cooking for her dog lol.

I feel like herbs are often overlooked.

Here's an example of one of their foods.
Fresh Chicken (45%); Freshly Prepared Turkey (15%); Carrots (2%)

Squash (2%); Pearl Barley (1%); Brown Rice; Apples; Broccoli; Peas; Blueberries (1%); Vitamins & Minerals; Flaxseed (Source of Omega 3 & 6)

Herbs & botanicals: Golden Rod, Nettle, Aniseed, Celery Seed, Rosehips, Marigold Petals, Cleavers, Seaweed, Alfalfa, Milk Thistle, Dandelion Root, Burdock Root.

You need calcium so bone meal/ground eggshells/calcium powder and offal - both ideally in each meal. I'm only familiar with supplements you mix in with raw like AntiForte etc .. apart from one I used for Lucy called V-Interga. I wouldn't recommend it at all though - this is an alternative to Balance-It which is only available in the US... you go on their website / pay a "board certified nutritionalist" to go on for you, make up the recipe and then mix this stuff in to balance it all out. The renal one just stank - was so chemically and horrible I wasn't happy feeding it and she wasn't happy eating it which suited me fine!

When I DIY for Bailey I get some liver and kidney, portion/blend it up and freeze into moulds then just drop one into his meal - you only need around 10% raw / 5% cooked liver so when you do a batch it lasts a good while. I did think about putting him on home cooked a while ago and was looking at books on amazon - the Lilys kitchen lady actually has a recipe book you can buy but they're not balanced so I don't know if they're a great reference - most of the books I could find ere the same so I gave up!

http://dogaware.com/diet/homemade.html is a great source of info - they give amounts of everything for both cooked and raw.

Guys thanks so much. I'll have a look at your links now.

One thing we've noticed is the reduction of poo. It's amazing!

:pac::pac: Yes always a bonus lol!

I also give Healthy Hound Omegawild fish oil btw! Omega 3 fatty acids from marine based sources are best. It works out cheaper from Amazon too ;)
