A famous Galway Face gone to his eternal reward. Such a nice man. Great Energy for a lot of things including supporting Galway GAA, Stewarding in Pearse Stadium and Fundraising for Local Charities. Some might remember him conserving this energy when he would have a nap on the chair outside Roches Stores. Nobody else would get away with some of the stuff he got up to but few people would challenge Brendan and come out a winner. It might be taking a seat on the Galway Team Bus or turning up at Functions without an invite. It was a brave man to say no to him. He had a great heart for a lot of things. He will be missed but never forgotten. RIP Brendan. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

RIP Brendan. Anyone who grew up in Galway in the ‘80’s and ‘90’s will surely be familiar with him, a real larger than life character! I mostly associate him with the old Roches Stores way back in the day.

If there’s a heaven, Brendan is certainly there and he’ll be God’s right hand man. He was one of a kind; irrepressible and impressive. Incredible how he could always bring happiness and joy wherever he was. Condolences to all his family and friends.

Remember him well from Roches and from seeing him at the Galway football and hurling matches also in more recent times. RIP.

RIP Brendan. One of the best known faces around the place for sure and always working for one good cause or another.

Would he have been in Roches Stores in the early 90's? Kind of storeman/ security, not quite sure what his roles was tbh :)

Ya he would have been there until the mid/late 2000's. He was mostly in the stockroom in Roches.

The Advertiser has a very touching editorial on Brendan this week: https://www.advertiser.ie/galway/article/115190/a-man-who-made-everyone-feel-they-were-boss
People like Brendan, Nora Ward (Collins ), Una Taaffe, and Madame Bridget have left an indelible mark on the city. Their lives were different, their backgrounds varied, yet when the social history of Galway is written, they will all have played a key role in the minds of all who shaped the city.

    [...]

Characters become characters because they live their lives out in the public eye. They are very much a 19th and 20th century phenomenon. Cities and towns don’t produce characters anymore; life moves too fast now; people are too self conscious to make themselves conspicuous.

The passing of Brendan brings an end to that era. In all honesty, who can we describe as a character anymore? Perhaps he is the last in Galway who will be remembered with such a label. And that in itself is a sadness.

    [...]

It is sad perhaps that a man who made a virtue out of not missing many funerals, should pass away when so few of us are allowed to go to his. But today (Thursday ), as his cortege leaves Irwin’s Funeral Home at 11 in the heart of the area that was his working home for so many years, if you are there, perhaps take some time out to line the way, or say a prayer for a man who was of Galway.

The last paragraph I copied above really got me - have memories of my grandfather's funeral some years ago and knowing of Brendan and knowing of his penchant for attending anyone and everyone's funeral.

Ah thats him alright, i was a Sales Rep at the time and the stockroom was very small, could be hard to find stock at times, but he was always the man to ask. Could get stout too the same man :) but a lovely fella. RIP

Ah ya he was cranky as all hell at times but as mischievous as they came too, never a quiet moment when he was in.

Why? It's nothing but respectful and affectionate.

Don't try an engage with that poster, any chance to throw digs or derail threads they'll take it.

This is a great thread for a great man and should be left that way for anyone wishing to honour his memory.

It was a nice touch to bring him out to the stadium and have a few songs sung on his way to his final resting place.
