    Hi.
Has anyone experience of Magnets broadband anywhere?
I currently use 4G Vodafone mobile broadband. I previously had their DSL offering where the speeds were terrible so switched to the 4G.
It’s better but still extremely hit or miss.
I read that the magnet broadband supposedly has no contention.

So say we can get 20mb download does this mean that we should get this speed consistently as there is no congestion?
Or do I have this all wrong?
    Thanks in advance

Your post doesnt make sense, analogous to "my car has a 50L fuel tank so it will do 50Mph".

20GB would be usage. 20Mb would be speed. If you can get 20Mb with magnet it should be the same with all the xDSL providers (Eir, Vodafone, Sky etc etc). Now that basically everywhere is NGB/NGA there should be nowhere offering 20Mb that has congestion.

If you take the providers at their word then yes, the zero contention ratio means your download speed should be unaffected by any other users on the mast. Normally upstream data bandwidth is shared between X users, this is the contention ratio, X:1.

In my own experience contention is the biggest factor influencing download speeds in rural areas. With the providers I have tried (all tested with high gain antennas), download speeds are inconsistent during the day but at 4:00 am speeds are consistent. There can of course be bottle necks upstream too.

I have no experience of Magnet, so can not comment if their network lives up to the marketing claims. The benefit of a 1:1 contention ratio will be nullified if their network has a bottleneck somewhere upstream.

Sorry in the real world there is really no yes or no answer, you are doing the right thing, best to ask a Magnet user (ideally connecting to your local mast) who has experience of using the network.
