The original paintjob actually looked better...perhaps get them back to spray paint the black over it?

Such a shame, a masterpiece of a master. Ignorance at its best. Would this have happened back in his time? No. Why? Because people back then had the cop on and respect to actually appreciate the man and his talent.

    Scum who did this.

They should have put it in the city centre, outside Sinnotts Pub and the Stephen's Green shopping centre, plenty of footfall and opportunities for tourists to take snaps near it, he wasn't in Swedish House Mafia so does anyone really think John-Paul or Jordan from East Wall would have even heard of him?

Is that Christy Burke ...aka "one of our own".

Wonder what he means by "one of our own".....middle class salaried professionals working in IT perhaps?

No joke but there’s a different statue of Luke Kelly also in that location

Yeah it would have. That area has always been a total sh1thole. From the rampant drug dealing to the car theft and vandalism to the decades of mugging concert goers on the way to the Point. Horrible. The entire "community" is a spectacular failure and should've been broken up when the IFSC went in.

Whip it out of pikeyville and let it be appreciated somewhere else

He's consulting with the Mexican ambassador to seems if he can get Pancho Villa in to guard it.

Buh wharra bout the rayer oul toimes and Bang Bang?

What they could do is pepper the area with replica memorials. So alike that you can't tell the difference. Have At least one on every street. The chances of finding the real one to deface would be minuscule.
They could be shuffled around occasionally to keep the vandals on the back foot.

The actions of Dublin City Council are the very definition of insanity (doing the same thing over and over expecting a different outcome).

For me, I refer back to my previous post from the last time it was vandalised.

    What do people expect?

The native population can't help themselves. Of course it is going to get destroyed.

Now, if they wanted to reduce crime in the city (and the welfare bill), they could deploy snipers in the vicinity and use the statue as bait. Basically one big mouse trap for scumbags.

I never understood the eulogizing of that period of great poverty, hardship and crime.

Dublin City Council are playing a blinder in refusing to relocate the statue. A case is always made by others on behalf of so called disadvantaged areas that such areas are always left out, that they never have any public money spent in the locality,, don’t have enough “facilities”. By DCC standing firm it is highlighting very clearly how certain sectors from within the local community treat investment in their own community. It doesn’t matter if it’s a phone box or a piece of high quality public art. An old adage used to go that such types “didn’t sh1t in their own area/doorstep” It would appear that the IQ has dwindled with successive generations, despite the vast amount of public money invested within such areas in social workers, treatment centres, community centres etc. Keep it going as it highlights what is never talked about in the left wing media. Scumbags that deserve nothing from the rest of society as they are a blood sucking cancer.

The ancestors of the locals were probably the very ones who went on a looting spree in 1916.

Surely after the 2nd or 3rd time they'd put up CCTV to catch the culprits?

Any community 'representative' provide a reason for the constant vandalism?

Hoodie up renders CCTV useless, especially at night. And a CCTV system is just “investing” more money in the area. I suspect the dogs in the street know who’s doing it.

No surprise that the people who do it can't even spell.

A lot of north inner city sorts like to think of themselves as salt of the earth, True Blue Dub sorts. The reality is that most of them are just knackers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 131 ✭✭brucky

And if DCC do move it (I hope they don’t) they should move it to a new location with a new plaque stating that “this statue of Luke formerly stood amongst his local community, but was moved as they didn’t want him, nor respected him” And the left wing looney local Cllrs whinge and grandstand demanding “community gain” from the Dublin Docklands Development every 5 minutes to prop up their electoral careers. Laughable if it wasn’t so sad.

There's only one solution to this. Clean it immediately, and don't report on it. The scrotes who do this sort of thing do it for the attention. If they wake up the next afternoon and wander down to admire their own handiwork only to see it's gone, they'll soon give up. This is the strategy used in New York in the 80s to cub graffiti with considerable success.

Maybe swap it for the one in South King Street which is a more traditional type.

The parents should be made clean it up. (If they know who both thier parents are)
Plus the family of the lads who did it should be made apologise to the family and relatives of Luke Kelly.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

I was thinking along these lines. Because there is so little to report on (for obvious reasons) these fellas get notoriety and can brag to thier pals. Most likely the same crew that damaged it the last five times in a year.

Too many little scumbags with no appreciation or respect for anything roaming wild with impunity this area. I fear for the future.
