I aggree, the RCZ is a beautiful car....and prices are modest enough

I wonder is there a catch ? Reliability being the big thing I guess

Peugeot designed some stunning cars over the years.

The first gen 406 coupe was a car I drooled over for years ...

Peugeots are more reliable than their german friends these days. That rcz rated well for reliability.

    Still love the 406 coupe. I had a 607 3.0 v6 myself which i still miss.

Fiesta ST is a brilliant hot hatch. Such a fun car to drive. Will put a smile on your face every day.

I think it might suit the OP's needs ideally. Running costs aren't bad all things considered.

A 2.0 diesel RCZ or TT are pretty but there's no comparison to a FST in the real world.

After all the cock waving.... I think we all know he's going to go out and buy a newer Golf (probably a 'sporty' diesel, GTD or GTTDI etc.)

sadly so. I want to start a website where you enter your budget and is your priority speed, comfort or reliability and it recommends you any other car except the golf you were thinking of buying.

theres such a silly markup in the used market and the new prices are off the wall, nothing wrong with a golf but its just such a boring conservative choice compared to all the other great cars out there.

certainly on the cheaper end of the market but there seems to be plenty of 2014 218ds going for around £8.5k

    Beware of timing chain issues

Given your name, have you considered an MX5?

    I've been doing some research.

I think my best bet is to get an Mx-5.

Since I'm still in college (and have the opportunity to save a good stack of money between now and when college resumes), I'll buy one in cash.

So say €6k (ideally less) for an NC, I'm probably looking an a pre 08 one for that price.
I'd hope to get one with tax, and keep it for 2 years, so I'll only fork out the once, as I'd realistically be selling the car after 2 years I'll be finished college/working full time.
I wouldn't be tying myself into any debt..
Yeah they're petrol which isn't ideal for me but I've managed so far, and the bottom line is I'd just really like an Mx-5!

I'm trying my best to avoid it..

I don't want a smelly diesel but the low road tax..
Even on a relatively new Mx-5 ND, it's up on €700.

I'm tempted by an Audi TT, albeit a diesel..

700 euro seems alot but its only 2 euro a day.

How long is your commute to college?

I'd have a serious think about what it's like to commute in a convertible during the winter before commiting to a purchase.

The Mazda MX5 ND is a better car, and the tax for the 1.5l version is €280. Fuel consumption is good, and if you got a UK one and imported it, you should get it inside your top budget.

However, the insurance might cause you to wait until you are 25.

[Edit: I checked out a typical MX5 ND - 2016 30,000 miles. UK price £10,000 plus €2,144 plus Nox €75. Add a few Euro to go and get it. Sounds better value than an NC and much nicer.]
