Vista update can it be done

Okay have old laptop and not been used since the Flinestones and has vista installed

I want to check if I can update it to Windows 7 or even 10

Is there an online checker or any way I can check manually

You can get Windows 10 regardless, and use it without an Activation key.
Whether your laptop will be able to run either 7 or 10, that is the trickier question. What are the specs?

It's from the states so last time turned on seems about 3/4 years. Windows update not working can't connect to the server see if I can update it to Windows 7 at least

Just want to do a clean install /update as nothing required on it so no back up required

I can just download Windows 10 from ms website and install that way including key to install

You cannot upgrade directly to 10 from Vista.
Better off doing a clean install anyway.

IMO it won't really run to a level more than granny checking her eircom.net email account in one tab once a month though.

Cheers will download onto USB and do clean install. Take it I need activation key as one from installed vista version won't work?

Laptop only going to be for parents cocooning for zoom and possibly Internet & email no more no less. They use ms excel but can use desktop for that if need be

I'd give it a try unactivated first before considering purchasing a licence.
