Apple tree sucker

    I have restarted to cultivate my veg garden and I have noticed that on apple tree I planted about 10 years ago has a fork in the trunk with 2 different types of wood.
    I looks like the root stock has grown up. Would this be normal?
    Can I cut the trunk off this time of the year?
    I would post a photo of the tree but I don't have enough posts to allow me.

    Yes I would on a dry day and put some wax or something similar on it, otherwise it will weaken the tree
