Maybe people might realise how good we have it in Ireland.

Instead of the usual it's a kip and the people aren't looked after bla bla.

As a nation we are spoiled and pampered like no other.

Minimum wage is a good thing.
It means workers are not exploited.
I think k we should be proud of having a minimum wage in this country, plenty don't.
That is Low Paid work . Why are you proud of Low Paid Work.

Its Nothing to be Proud Of. You should be Ashamed of Low Paid Work and the Exploitation of People. Why would you be Proud of Low Pay ? ?:eek:

    The N92 masks are slipping

    not sure what you mean.

just think people shouldn't be quick to think that these people are poor and vulnerale, most of them are young and make the smart choice to head west to make some money while they're young. Pays for college and student nights out. Think of them like Irish j1ers when Ireland was poorer.

I would hazard a guess that once the Bulgarians leave and if the CV19 crisis has abated then all those waving there fists in anger at their smartphones produced in countries under labour conditions no one here would work under and made with metals probably mined using child labour while destroying the environment in the process, won't give a flying fork about the Bulgarians as they sip their Nesspresso coffee produced by underage workers doing backbreaking work for a couple of euro a day.

They won't, and tbh they don't give a fuck about keelings either, it's just somewhere to vent rage.

So long as the worlds economy is based on infinite growth and heavy consumption - this is how it's going to be, perhaps more of this needs to be brought to the surface, but will it change anything? Will it fuck, this is just todays whipping boy - people are bored and angry - this is a great thing to shout about for a few hours, something new will be along soon.

It's not less money then you would pay Irish people.
The job pays minimum wage. Irrespective of the nationality of the employee
Nice little earner charging them for the accommodation and food ! !

How much does the Agency / Gang Boss get ? ?

I see from the Reddit Post that the have to pay 300 Euro to sign on with the agency. Is that even Legal ? ?

They also don't realise that if the current crop of fruit isn't picked then there's no incentive for growers to send out workers to plough the fields and reseed for the next crop, leading to shortages of produce meaning Ireland would have to import those fruits/vegetables and increase the cost of producing food.

I reckon the posters point is - we're all in glass houses, throwing stones at keelings is one thing, but if we don't want to be
hypocrites we need to either stop, or start throwing a lot more stones in a lot more places.

    How old are you?
Nobody said anything about being proud of low paid work.
There are jobs that have low pay, people have to work in these jobs.
The fact that Ireland protects workers to the extent that there is a minimum wage is, A Good Thing.
Otherwise, employers could pay it not pay whatever they wished.

So, what exactly is your problem with the Bulgarians coming here to pick fruit?

The entire EU food supply is reliant on migrant labour.

I can't imagine we will ever return to a time where we're completely self sufficient for food in terms of production and/or harvesting.

At the same time, I never want to see a point where our food supply is dictated by likes & shares.

So would you be onboard with the government heavily incentivesing a reduction of the need for migrant labour to secure "vital" food supplies at a time when travel restrictions can easily be put in place by the countries of origin.
If it's actually vital that these strawberries get picked then you can't argue against that right?

Allow workers already resident to claim both the wage and Covid-19 payment would result in a huge number of applicants and would secure the strawberry supply.

Like if it's actually vital then there is no sound argument against it, we closed outdoor construction sites that's causing a huge loss in revenue and business activity so it's clearly not about money it's about security? Why not make it actually secure then if that's the argument.

Are people justified to think that we shouldn't be flying workers in during a time of a health crisis. But does the miss the point. People think the Coronavirus is all or nothing. That's been badly communicated. We are living like this to keep things under control. People coming from outside makes no difference. These may as well be Irish people coming back. It's not like there's an outrage if we saw a lot of Irish people coming back at once. RTE would be there rejoicing at how heroic they are. Why were these workers not cheered for keeping our food supply coming.

And also forgotten the agricultural workers who busted themselves to keep shelves stocked when the mass panic buying.

But now people in non essential roles have a few weeks to sit and home and seem to have become bitter.

They are people who come here to make money, a hell of a lot more money then they can at home.

I read on Reddit is your evidence?

They should not have come simply as, at least until some of the restrictions has been lifted.

Correct but there are so many Posters here that think it is Something to be Proud Of i.e. Low Paid Work:eek::eek:

Keelings are making plenty of money out of their strawberrys , wouldnt you think theyd pay people a bit more than minimum wage rather than try get away with paying the bare minimum always . Donald Trump would be proud of their greed!

They have no shame going to the poorest part of Rural Bulgaria for the most desperate citizens in the EU to pick their strawberrys instead of paying a reasonable wage to locals.

Never mind incentives, there's no saying those growers will still be in business.

One of the things that is being done right at the moment is maintaining the food supply.

It's working so well that some people feel comfortable enough suggesting we should deliberately interrupt elements of the food supply chain.

Because if they are actually vital to secure our food supply the government should be pulling out all the plugs to get people already resident in Ireland to take up the jobs as our food supply is at stake because countries could easily restrict travel as they don't want a load of their citizens coming back with the virus.

This isn't happening though which means either the government is risking our food supply or the workers are needed for things that aren't actually vital considering construction shut down despite being a bigger section of the economy than fruit and veg.

Both these things can't be true at the same time

The problem in this post is that they're taking your job, is that it?
Did you apply for one of those jobs or it's better on 350e a week?

Youse remember when everyone was fighting for bread a year ago while no one was touching the flour?
That's exactly the same thing, everyone complains but no one wants to do it.
    Disgraceful.

You would swear these fruit pickers were worked to death.

How would the fair out in a big pour of concrete on a warm day, a waste of time, posters around here doesn't know what a hard days work is, only going by what someone told them.

Picking fruit is tiring work, but not hard work, end of story.

I would rather the Government concentrate on the health services and trying to keep all workers and businesses from closing down than to try and fix the Strawberry controversy.

We should be conscripting fruit pickers at a national level?

    It's an interesting idea.
