    Since working from home its become so apparent how bloody ****e broadband in Ireland is outside of Cities. Im in a town 20 minutes outside of Galway and Fibre is available everywhere bar the estate I live in (covered in that green circle on their coverage map). A cabinet on their rollout map is "within 1 year" for the last 3 years at this stage.

    That is what you get when infrastructure provision is in the hands of commercial entities and not society/government.

    Hopefully the NBP will sort out those problems related to broadband in the coming years.
    Vodafone supposed to be dropping a router out to me Tuesday (for ADSL "up to 15mb". Assuming its going to be ****e, I hopefully will be able to get lightnet fixed wireless.

    Will use the cooling off period with vodafone to cancel if it is as ****e as I suspect - expecting 7Mb DL and 0.5 UL. Am I being overly pessimistic with those speeds?

    That's probably about right if you are 2km from you exchange.
    How far are you by road as the lines usually follow the road for the most part.

    How do I find out what exchange I'm connected to?

    You can't. Your provider can. It's not public data.

    Anyone can query the Eir website and find out.

    With enough clue to look into the code :) .. yes. Sure, for a while you could pull even more detail of the Vodafone website, until they figured out, that they may be in trouble and shut that particular checker down.

    Living in north Galway, near Dunmore.

    Recently got a GoMo SIM and I've tried using it in my Huawei B253 router with the data.myeirmobile.ie.

    Results aren't much better than my other halfs Tesco connection in 4G.
    3G is a little better actually.

    Ookla test results (all using B253 router):
    Vodafone => 28mbps (4G)
    Tesco => between 1 and 2mbps (3G)
    GoMo => 1 to 4mbps (3G)
    Between 1 and 2mbps, sometimes under 1 (4G)

    Yeah, it's a no brainer. Problem is I want an all you can eat plan and I was getting through the 30GB allowance in my 30e Vodafone mobile plan quite fast.

    The only offer they have that's useful for me is the one that offers 50GB but it's a contract :
    RED Max SIM Only
    €35 /month for the first 6 months,
    €45 thereafter

    I could get a separate mobile broadband plan off Vodafone for 40e a month :
    https://n.vodafone.ie/shop/broadband/mobile-broadband.html

    ... and then change my main mobile number to a cheap supplier such as GoMo.

    Ultimately I just wish Vodafone weren't such tight arses with their plans (would be cool to get everything with one plan), as none of the other suppliers are much good in my area. A bit jealous of those closer to urban areas :)

    ...and as soon VF would loosen their "tight arses", their network would become saturated same as Three....

    Ok, I need to totally change what I said above about GoMo.

    Moved the router to another part of the house and changed it to 4G. This morning I got:
    GoMo=> 6 to 10mbps (4G)
    Upload was around 6 to 8

    So it varies wildly, but those results aren't far from Vodafone. I think Vodafone is more consistent (got 12 to 15mbps this morining). But GoMo is looking like a runner now for our main house broadband (only two of us here, non-heavy users).

    GoMo is great where I am. I was previously with 3 and used to get barely any signal as I live in a semi rural area, downloads would be around 0.10mbps and uploads about 0.03mbps. Most of the time the speedtest wouldn't even run.

    I moved to GoMo several months ago and get speeds of up to 30mbps download and 22mbps upload.

    Speeds are somewhat dependent on your location and what mast is being used.

    In my case I have no signal indoors from 3, Vodafone or Eir/GOMO, so they are all equally useless indoors.
    They all use the same mast!

    I reckon an outdoor aerial and an indoor 'repeater' would give me great results ...... but the mobile phone is only really used when I am out and about (mobile :)) so I have not bothered.

    Anyone have an idiot-proof explanation/solution as to why my download speeds on my laptop (cheap HP model, but generally okay for my needs) have dropped off the edge of a cliff, whereas they're still fine on my mobile? Both of them are on the same WiFi in the house, and my speed is reasonable enough

    Screenshot-20200525-175423-Speedtest.jpg

    I was getting download speeds of 3mbps up until about 3 or 4 weeks ago, now it drops down after a few minutes to around 200KB/s. It's still excellent on the phone, so it isn't my provider limiting the speed. If it's the laptop that needs replacing, it's something I have on my "to do" list anyway. No more than myself, it's getting a bit shook. Any pointers would be appreciated. Virus, possibly? My Norton expired around mid April, and I hadn't renewed due to (as I mentioned earlier) me possibly getting a new laptop in the near future.

    1. Your image show 274 Mbps ... i guess its your phone
    2. 3 Mbps on laptop 3-4 weeks ago should rise concern that time ago :D
    3. 200 Kbps these days like no connection at all...
    4. Possibly WiFi NIC failing, they do sometime - either get replacement NIC (providing its replaceable) or get USB WiFi adapter
    5. Scan system with ESET online scanner or alike if concerned ...

    It was off the phone. The laptop is registering 57 download and 47 upload with a ping of 57. Tried scanning, but nothing showing up. Will give the WiFi adapter a try. Thanks for the reply.

    Any chance you or another user installed a VPN?

    Nope. But there has been a development today. Last night, I did the quick scan with that ESET app, which threw up nothing. I powered off and went to bed. This morning, I booted up the laptop and let it run a full scan while I was out of the house all day. Got in a while back, and checked the scan result. 5 issues were uncovered, and they've been quarantined (very apt at the moment!). It's now back to somewhere near where it was. A smidgin over 2Mbps download speed. Which I'm happy enough with. Thanks for the replies.

    Oh yes it is... I'm only on the 150mb package but managed to get it bumped up to 300 for free the day after install. Can't afford 1gb but I'm super happy. Been stuck on 4g all the years before.

    So it varies wildly, but those results aren't far from Vodafone. I think Vodafone is more consistent (got 12 to 15mbps this morining). But GoMo is looking like a runner now for our main house broadband (only two of us here, non-heavy users).

    Just to update; the GoMo was highly variable over the longer term - been trialling it since mid-April. Off peak times it was really rather fine, from 3 to 6mbps and up to 8mbps late night / early morning. But at weekends and in evenings it was notoriously unpredictable and inconsistent, dipping to <1mbps at times and remaining there for a while. There were times I got really frustrated when trying to stream a live event or when my partner was trying to video call her family, etc. I even had issues with voice calls.

    In the meantime, Vodafone magically stopped being such tight arses (as I predicted they would eventually!) and have finally offered some great unlimited plans. So I've switched from GoMo to Vodafone X and I'm very happy with it. Even with the 10mbps limit, it's fine for our needs and it's realiable.

    Latest results:
    Vodafone=> from 6 to 13mbps DL or UL (4G) *consistently* --> strange, it's supposed to be limited to 10 but sometimes goes above that
    GoMo => Today, 1 to 2mbps, sometimes 5, sometimes less than 1 *highly inconsistent and unpredictable*

    I'm happy to pay Vodafone the extra for consistency and reliability. It's also faster.

    Meteor cells (Gomo,Eir) cover larger areas in many cases, this leaves them very prone to peak time contention. They need a huge investment in their network to catch up with Three/VF.

    These are my "4g+" speeds from three mobile. Shockingly bad

    Got an email from VF today, saying that my fibre bb has been increased from 300 to 500mb free of charge, due to the amount of people connecting at home in these times. Anyone know if this is a temporary arrangement, or if it is permanent?

    It's likely to be permanent, as the 300 Mbit/s profile on OpenEIR is being outfased.

    So Vodafone actually can't put you back in a few months.

    Only those who don't get migrated get stuck on 300.
