They've made some pretty good music in their time especially in the 80s and 90s. I would have thought most people that like rock music would be hard pressed to not like at least a few of their songs but you'll probably never get genuine answers because of muso posturing and the issue of Bono being a bit irritating.

Have to say as well, even as a relative neutral, I think the Edge is a very good and quite original guitarist.

I'm so disinterested in U2 that when ppl criticize them, especially Bono, I just don't get it. No idea.

That's quite an insult when you think about it.

I didn’t mind U2 back in the day. They had some good tunes in their earlier years. But that song The Sweetest Thing killed them for me. I just hate that song. And then they went to ****e after that.

    Think?

    I know I don't like them

......never have done, in fact you might say I really don't like their music, and so what? I also dislike the Manic Street Preachers, & Texas. That Sharleen Spiteri wrecks my head, nearly as much as Bono, and the Manics just shout.

Could never get into it at all

Can you please provide examples of what you class as good music.
Just to see where you're coming from.

Comedian Bill Bailey did a great Mickey take of U2 a few years back, mocking "the edge" :D

    Brilliant.

They had some good songs in the 80's but then Nirvana happened and set rock music on a different course for the next few years so they weren't that relevant anymore.

Has anyone seen “it might get loud”

It has the Edge in it. He is a fantastic guitarist

I wouldn't say I am a fan in that I've never seen them live. Also I wouldn't like all their stuff - not sure anyone could?

Although not seeing them live I do seek out stuff on YouTube and in certain settings I think his voice is great.

Many have said what I was going to say other than I quite like some of their recent stuff too, the likes of - Every breaking wave, song for someone, ordinary love, invisible.

Someone told me recently that she wouldn't cross the road to see them. Aren't comments like this just people's way of saying that they're sick of Bono and what U2 has turned into. Realistically if they were to hear some of the U2 hits for the first time tomorrow, they'd probably be raving about them. Right?

I’d rather commit suicide than listen to U2 and bono

I assume you are very young. U2 and Nirvana were both massive in early 1990s, the idea that Nirvana knocked U2 off their pedestal simply isnt correct.

Great music and a great bunch of lads.

...though I have to admit that Bono can sometimes be a bit preachy.

Enjoyed their 80s material. The Edge had some great riffs during this period. Eventually (inevitably) he deviated away from that and U2 no longer had that distinctive sound they had cultivated during the time.

But I will also certainly appreciate them for my favourite music video of all time. One in which the members of the band are nearly absent from, a lesser known song called All I Want is You. Filmed on a beach in Italy with an entirely Italian cast, it’s basically a vignette about a dwarf in a traveling circus that is obsessively infatuated with a trapeze artist.

It’s not on Youtube. But can be viewed here.

    https://www.u2.com/media/player/98/8

The making of the video is also interesting. The woman in the video is an actual trapeze performer.

I have being listening to bands for a while and for me U2 were relevant for a time, there are very few bands that can stay relevant for more than 20 years, its just a sound you associate with an era.

I think our stand out rock musician possibly Rory Gallagher and i do not think his music has dated.
The Beatles music has dated, so has the Stones.
Elvis Costello, the Who, Bob Dylan are as relevant today as ever in my opinion.
I have always being a big fan of Randy Newman and he has bot dated though he id 77, he says himself it may be because he was no good in the first place.
Thanks for post as interesting topic in the wider sense.
If you think i do not what i am talking about that's OK.

1980s U2 were class, anyone who thinks differently has no taste in music

No one can keep up that level for very long

They made great music for a long, long time. I think Bono's heart is in the right place, but he's just woefully tone deaf.

Anyway, Lemon is their best song.

All electric guitarists are going to sound ridiculous if you turn the electricity off.

....so people hate U2 and Bono because he gives money to charity and "preaches" about other people helping?

Yep, sounds about accurate for the internet. This place sometimes makes 4chan sound enlightened.

It's cool these days to say you can't stand u2, like a few years ago it was cool to make fun of Coldplay. Then when tickets went on sale for croke Park concert sold out in minutes. The sheep will conform.

To be fair he preaches about governments giving money to charity and foreign aid, while also ( at least as part of U2) probably avoiding some tax.

As to U2's charity, its probably big enough. More than Voldemort.

It wasn't the lack of electricity, it was the jingly jangly "edge sound" that Bill played on his guitar :)

    Brilliant U2 piss take.
