Best price is almost as opening line for these. And then half whatever number you give them immediately.

I just say “make me an offer” why would you bid against yourself?

I know it’s irrational and silly but when I see a 089 number call me I have visions of a certain ethnicity going into tesco and buying a sim card for the burner phone, having had trouble before with said prospective buyer I just don’t need the hassle in my life.

I felt the same way about 085 numbers about 12 years ago.

Thats it basically. Surprised more people don't know this.

My half baked stereotypical personal opinions on mobile phone prefixes.

083; IT whiz kid working out of barrow street, bmw 4 series on pcp, renting a 2 bed apartment overlooking Spencer Dock for the bargain on €215per month.

085; 1st mobile number for the under 30s run of the mill average joe or Jane, working as a sales assistant or call centre, drives a 07 Golf that was paid for by the credit union, saving for a mortgage.

086; bought a gaff in 2007 at the height of the boom, talks about negative equity when property gets mentioned, bought a 2018insignia on pcp and the car hasn’t seen a service since it was bought.

087; mortgage paid, goes to the same kip in Spain every year for holidays, they know the Barmans 1st name, 2012 Mercedes E220 Manual, can’t understand why the son had to move back in to save for a mortgage and has to move their 07 Golf from the driveway on Saturday mornings as he’s going to play golf.

088; long gone but; brown envelopes in the glove box of a blue W124, Charlie is a great man, massive combover, lives in Castleknock.

    089....... if I said what I wanted I’d get a ban.

virgin/tesco/lyca. When selling anything I never answer 089 numbers , most of the time the cheapskates even try call you on WhatsApp audio. It really does make the odds in saving me time.

To be honest, there is a worse class of headmelter than the "best price, boss" and "CASH NOW" crowds, and that is the forum-reading enthusiast who hasn't two pennies to rub together.

I remember I was selling a lovely little 94 Fiat Tipo a few years ago, 1 owner example with small miles and NCT that I picked up cheap from an old fella local to me. I had it on Donedeal with nice pictures, a nicely written ad etc and get a call from some middle-aged fella who proudly goes on to say he has a Brava and a Seicento or something like that....so he "knows the marque"

A few things stand out in my mind from that phone call:

-he wasn't happy that the (main dealer) service history was from a garage that had closed (Sweeney & Forte on the Clontarf Road) because he wouldn't be able to verify it with them.

-he wasn't happy that the tyres weren't a premium brand, and wondered what else the owner might have "skimped" on.

-wasn't happy that the bonnet was resprayed (rookie mistake, I shouldn't have told him this) because it took away from the originality of the car....a 94 Tipo up for €500

By the end of the call he said he'd go and ask herself's permission to buy another car, and he'd get back to me with an offer if she said yes. I promptly blocked the number.

I've dealt with loads of similar types over the years and I can't stand them. Absolute muppets.

I would have reminded him he’s enquiring about a 26 year old car for €500, and it is what it is. I would of used an unparliamentary term or two too.

I've noticed with you that if someone out there dare's to question what value you place on a cheap car you are trying to sell on to make a fast buck off of, you like to proclaim they haven't two pennies to rub together.

Maybe they are just able dealers and used to Del Boy characters.

Had a car up a few weeks ago, put it up for 900, 05 Avensus, decent spec, full year tax and just NCTd with 15 months on it. Just wanted it sold quickly but my god it was torture, first person who came to view bought it for 800 but the car was up a week.

First call, 3 mins after I put the ad up!
"I'll meet ya tonight to buy it, what's the best price?"
Listen come and see it and make me an offer
"Ah I'll give you 500, it's all I have on me and the highest I'd go"
You havent seen the car though, listen mate, I'm not going to sell it for 500 and you've not seen the car.
"Your loss, you wont get more than 500 for that thing"
    Grand cheers mate, good luck

Next day your man rings me again and says he will stick it up to 550 and the fact I havent sold means hes probably ripping himself off bidding that! ****ing painful!!! Told him I wouldnt take an offer seriously unless he viewed the car, told me I was a time waster and obviously not seriously selling! Peoples idiocy will never surprise me.

I just don’t understand what some lads get out if doing that, it’s a complete waste of time energy and effort doing that to sellers, maybe they get the odd bargain who knows but I wouldn’t imagine they do.

It's DoneDeal, nobody is advertising stuff for sale that is going up in value in all fairness.

If you don't want to have people ringing to haggle over the price bring your unwanted item to a dealer who specializes in it and see how much you are offered.

    Exactly!

Duke's incessant postings causes so much heart ache for a seller and I know from experience. As soon as he's posted a car that I'm selling the idiot calls and texts start.
I don't know whether or not he thinks he's doing a public service but in fact he causes so much bother with the nonsense commentary.
He strikes me as someone who has absolutely nothing else to do....just like the DD headmelters.

I used to sell the odd golf club on donedeal but it was a torture. People offering peanuts and others haggling over a fiver. Now I just sell any clubs I have to golfbidder and happily take the hit.

Point in case Rows Grower - penniless muppets from this very forum have poor jimjom hounded with idiotic calls and texts. See what I mean?

You are right though, about Donedeal. Its the last thing I see at night and first thing I see in the morning. It has taken over my life.

Yes and you draw them out with your 'expert opinion' on everything.

So I had some camera equipment for sale...

Time waster discussion.. ( There was a very annoying pre-cursor to this regarding the condition, age, shutter count, etc...)

"So what's your best price ?"

    "€1500"

"But you have it up for €1200"

"Have I ? That must be my best price so.."

"Ah you'll do better than that..."

"Sure I just knocked €300 off it for you, definitely won't be going any lower than that.. "

"But you had it up for €1200"

"Ya, but I wanted €1500 so 12 is my best price..."

So on and so on trying to get it into his head that it wasn't going for less than 12

Sold it the following day for €1200 to a fella that grabbed a bargain when he knew it..

On the other side of the fence I bought a lens off a guy recently. Had a camera and a couple of lenses for sale and I just enquired if he'd be interested in selling one of the lens separately. "I could but I'd want a thousand euros for it.." - " No bother, I'll take that off you. Hold on to it and I'll be up in two days" Messaged me back later asking if I was sure and if I'd definitely be paying the grand. No problem says I... On the day I was travelling he messaged me again to say that he didn't want me to turn up and try to haggle for a better price as he needed to get the grand for it. "I'm driving up with the grand and I'll be driving home with the lens and no grand" I told him. He actually seemed shocked when I handed him all the money for the lens !! I could understand where he was coming from though as some of the 'potential ' buyers are an absolute head wreck. That particular lens sells second hand for 1400 to 1500 so no was I going to try to beat him down again. I was delighted as it was and he was delighted to get a fast hassle free sale.

I work as a farmer. It can be a nightmare selling heavy equipment to non farmer types who ring wanting to see the machine. You have to try & figure out on the phone if this guy is going to case the place & rob me blind or does he genuinely want to buy. Had a loader for sale a few weeks ago & had a few calls from a certain ethic travelling minority who wanted to come see the machine. Selling tractors & cars isnt too bad compared to loaders. I even had two calls from other previous sellers warning me to be careful who I let come see the machine. You cant exactly drive a big loader to a neutral venue.

In fairness duke only posts decent cars, to say that when he posts a car on any the buying and selling pages they attract nuisance calls and texts is ridiculous.

He's obviously never posted or commented on one of your car adverts then.

When he finds a hobby outside of the internet and broadens his horizons he'll be fine.

No he has posted 3 over the years.

Your acting like a **** now to be fair, this is a forum that talks about cars and the discussion that surrounds it, duke isn’t doing anything your not.

In fact your last comment is the greatest contradiction I’ve seen in a bit.
