Since we are a small country with little or no money devoted to athletics surely we should spend are money wisely. Success is judged on success at world level (Olympics and WC). How we do at the europa cup will not reach the wider media and should our aim be to beat such countries as Malta and Norway. With the exeption of money held over for developement (youth not events that are currently bad standard) should all the money be spent on events which show the most promise. The money is limited so why spead it thin, Kenya don't really care about getting it's long jump standard up or Trinadad getting a world class steeplechaser, they look after those events which show most promise. It is not just money but also time and effort put in, should developement squads be set up for events that show most promise and the minimum (not nothing) done for the rest. In recent year the walk has showed promise, middle distance has had a good track record. We have got one junior medal in the jumps and one student games medal in the throws in the last 20 years. Should we be more selective on what the money/effort goes on and stop trying to produce a great europa cup team? I not talking about individual funding but funding for squads, if you got the standard in a weaker event why should you be held back. More so national focus and aims.

If Irish Athletics had made the decision to invest in the events we were strongest in during the early 80s.. no money would have gone to the sprints and the jumps. Interestingly these are the events which have yielded the greatest success in the past few years Sonia excepted.

Success is less driven by funding then by motivated coaches who generate excitement about their respective events. Want real success in track and field?, then plow money into the coaching system and whatever will facilitate those individuals in getting the job done.
