The public should clean their trolleys and handles before entering store under the watch of someone who is making sure its getting done and not let the poor fecker in the front line wash all trolleys and handles which puts him in danger.

It will get to the stage NO KIDS ALLOWED which i agree on as they cant keep their hands to them selves and maul everything.Masks and plenty of gloves around now but masks are not as easy but plenty of places on google to make your own face shield and masks if you can sew..2 shops i visit now have bamboo face masks for sale.

But of a rant but people are still coming in and behaving like they have all the time in the world to pick up what they want. This is worse in the off licence where they dither around taking photos of wine bottles and just clogging up the place.
Know what you want before you come in, pick it up quickly and get the **** out fast. Also, all the couples coming in, can you take turns doing the shopping and reduce the amount of people in the shop please?

Mr. Price in Ballincollig had signs up saying no under 18's the weekend before last. I don't know if it was a nationwide thing or just management made a call locally.

Needed bread and milk. Called to our local mini Centra. Young one there strolling through the aisles window shopping as she strolled along. Every label on every item she picked up was thoroughly read.

Myself and another shopper stood 6' from her while she was doing this. Eventually I had to ask her was she finished as other people needed to access the area where she was standing.

Completely oblivious of other people around her. When she got to the register the same sort of carry on, searching for her card, no bag to put her items in, foostering about.

I just wanted to give her a kick in the arse to wake her up....but it would have been a complete waste of time....although....

Leaving kids at home isn't an option for a lot of single parents especially now when they don't want to leave the kids with grandparents due to the risk there.

Even having a member of staff at the door to wipe down trolleys and ensure everyone entering the shop sanitised their hands would make a big difference. The supermarkets are cleaning up right now and could easily afford to do this. There was no controls at all in place the last time I visited my local Aldi.
I've found Supervalu good on this score. Well the two nearby to me anyway. Trolleys being wiped, hand sanitiser on the go.

I've come across a few of these types. I'm not backward in being loudly forward with them. Being barked at by a bloke wearing a half face respirator tends to move them on.

Whatever way they do it is fine but all trolleys should be wiped down before use either by a hygiene team or by customers and every customer should sanitise their hands before coming through the door. This would seem to be merely common sense but I don’t see any controls like this anywhere. I have zero confidence that everyone is practicing good hand hygiene at home so it has to be enforced at retail level.

If somebody is ill and decides to go do their shop anyway there probably isn’t much that can be done about that but I think the measures above should be effective given the advice the HSE are sharing about hygiene.

People like this annoy me to no end.

Same dopes are always like this. Queue moves on and they stand there oblivious to this fact. They never comprehend that there will need to be payment at the till. They will be the ones who stop at the top of an escalator to look around them.

Pity the virus didn't just attack the stupid.

You shouldn't use reusable bags when you go shopping. Always get new bags. That's what they told customers in US.

In Shenzhen the government pays pharmacies to give free masks to citizens.
In South Korea the post office gives 4 masks per citizen per week.

It doesn't take much intelligence to just copy what works from Asia, but no - they need to show 'they know better'.

Also if you make your own masks it's better than nothing.

Regular influenza by the way is far more deadly, this is for the most part a hoax to begin with.

People are slow guys and there nothing that can really be done about it.
I was watching queues outside somewhere last week and the worst offenders was the was the ones wearing masks. They spent they whole time poking at there face.

Just got a delivery of fruit from my local grocer. What is the protocol for safely wiping down and eating delivered fruit?

It’s not like you can rub down a kiwi with an anti bacterial wipe?

Anyone else getting a complete pain in their àrse with the measures we have to take now just to try avoid this? Like cleaning down feckin’ fruit!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,357 ✭✭✭chicorytip

This is only right. Same in China. The problem in Ireland is that there are no face masks available. Maybe the Government should have filled two planes full of protective gear and distributed 4 masks per month per household.
There are no masks available here but a company based in Kilmallock that manufactures them has just agreed a multi million contract to supply the Chinese while even some our own frontline healthcare workers are still going without. It's perverse.

Its a 3 week wait in my area. But if people just plan accordingly then it is still a worthwhile service. You can always edit your orders closer to the delivery date once you have a slot booked.

On 23rd March I booked a tesco delivery for April 7th, filled trolley with usual stuff. I've since realised there's a few items I need to add, but found I couldnt edit the delivery today. It says "Sorry you are too late to change this order, as we are currently doing your shopping" even though it's another week away. Anyone else able to edit an upcoming tesco delivery?

Can sort the other stuff out separately obviously, but would be easier if the edit option worked

You should be washing fruit and vegetables anyway.

That's weird, should still say pending collection until the day before.
I have upcoming click and collect and it's still open for updates.

I think someone back up the thread said their supermarket had someone at the door only letting one person from a couple inside. Thats a really good idea, the last thing we need right now is Johnny and Mary going through the supermarket having discussions about the purchase of every single product and asking each other if they have all the ingredients for that carbonara they plan for Thursday night. Shopping in a couple always takes 50% longer than doing it on your own.

Our local Tesco us asking for only one from family to shop now. Good idea.

No hand gel but they do have disinfectant for trolley/basket handle for customer to use.

Local SuperValu has restriction on amount of items bought/ hand gel at door and a staff member cleaning baskets.

Aldi has nothing. No hand gel. No obvious cleaning of trolley/ basket and nothing available for customers. No hand gel either.

    How will I survive;)

We're actually quicker on big shops cos we split up, leaving one person with trolley... did a few shops solo lately and took me a lot longer to shop and pack. But I guess we're in a minority.

Can you expand on the Supervalu restriction - amount of certain items or total amount in trolley?

The company you refer to - have signed a contract with the HSE to supply about 150,000 + respirator masks weekly

Their normal market was mainly export afaik including Asia and the middle east

The online shopping infrastructure that the supermarkets have was not designed for that kind of volume.
Incentives could easily be used to increase this capacity.
We're already seeing wholesalers or companies that used to deliver just to business moving into the household market.
This could grow quickly with the right incentives.
And provide supermarkets with enough competition to encourage them to do it as well.
Leaving aside home delivery it would be logistically impossible to pick everyone’s shopping and put it in the boot for them, that’s a niche service model that you can provide for a small number of customers at best.
Shops could offer a collection service for non-perishable foods only.
These can be picked during the night when the shops are empty and then collected during the day.
They would then only have to open for perishable foods.
This would cut down the time people have to remain in shops.
And hopefully migrate this across in the future to deliveries or collections.
All they can do is rigorously implement the recommended hygiene measures across the board...
Which from experience seems to vary from excellent to really poor.
Even at that you're still at the mercy of people with poor hygiene practices or who don't follow the rules.
And you're still mixing infected people with healthy people.

I did an online shop years ago, they called me almost every time because of things they didn't have, maybe you can call them ?
(It was the local store calling)

Same as us. We go in with a shared shopping list and can target different aisles. We spend little time fluttering around looking at items. And on top of that, we don't drive so we can carry more. All resulting in less time spent in the shops and fewer times going to the shops - which is a good outcome.

Tesco have said they will not be increasing their contactless payments from €30 to €50.

    Very bad form.

Was at Tesco's Maynooth earlier today..... Joined the orderly queue that was clearly spaced out and everyone seemed fine patiently waiting as entry was going quick enough.

Then three men joined the queue and commenced giving out that it wasn't right they had to be delayed by having to queue up. Spouting craptalk about being Frontline workers.

I didn't realise the construction industry had joined the health service heroes in building walls that can halt COVID-19.

Typical construction Hi-Viz wearing muppets showing off to one another most likely. Frontline me hole.....

Crisis will be long gone before they’d have that properly in place. I don’t think you fully appreciate the volume you are talking about here. It’s a completely different business model that would require huge restructuring of very large and long established retail businesses.

What multi billion euro industries have undergone such radical change on the scale required within a matter of days or even weeks? I can’t think of any. It’s relatively difficult to do when you are small, but virtually impossible for an industry the size of grocery fmcg.

We should obviously stay away from n-95 masks, but if you can make your own mask or you have dust masks for painting it seems we can stop/slow asymptomatic spread if we all wear them, and anyway as long as we don't buy the ones that the doctors and nurses and carers need then wearing them can't do harm https://news.expats.cz/coronavirus-in-the-czech-republic/the-czech-republic-is-a-model-of-anti-coronavirus-measures-writes-the-washington-post/

I wish I had a sewing machine, I do have dust masks for painting but I could make ones for everyone, if it's cloth you can use soap and warm water to make sure it doesn't have the virus, the same as washing your hands

    https://www.craftpassion.com/face-mask-sewing-pattern/

I'd email resthomes and ask them if they need them first (they are better than nothing even for frontline people) and then give them out to people i know (with instructions to wash with soap, because who knows if I have the virus, no way to know)

yeah some couples will get in there with a sense of purpose, know exactly what they want, get it and get out and thats fine. But then you've always got other couples who have left the house without checking whats in the fridge and then they're standing at the pasta shelves blocking the place up as they discuss if they'll go with the penne or the tagliatelle. It becomes the same for every single product section, a disucssion on what to get/do we already have it at home, etc.

Anyway was in my local Aldi an hour ago and they now have a security guard for the first time ever. I walked straight in, disinfected the basket. But on the way out there was a queue with the guard just letting one in when one came out.
