People do like drama and scaremongering. None of what they are saying is almost true. The curve is flattening cases and deaths will get lower and Ireland will be back again.

I'll have whatever you're on :pac:

so how did Germany close its borders two weeks ago?

    They didn't stop incoming flights.

    Natives trying to get home.

Should we leave them rot in another country?

913 new deaths in Spain, 7,846 new cases

    Has Spain over taken China?

How many cases have been caused by not closing them ? The Irish themselves have caused the clusters , people returning from skying holidays, which included nurses and doctors. The government know where the majority of cases in this country have stemmed from....

I think the majority at this stage are from 'community transmission' ...

Incorrect. You're allowed close your borders in an emergency. A number of EU Countries have done just that.

Also, who are these thousands of Italians?
Do you know how many flights we've had from Italy since the outbreak?

For starters there would've been hundreds who came over for the cancelled match having already booked flights, hotels etc.

Can you not accept that it's more likely brought to this country by the thousands of Irish coming back, most likely from ski trips.
Not more likely. As likely. Those Irish who came back were told to self isolate and anyone who tested positive had those who came into contact with them contacted and they themselves told to self isolate.

Meanwhile we were still bringing in loads of Italians who would've spread the virus rapidly throughout Dublin. There were a number of confirmed cases in this regard.

6,500 more cases, over twice the death figures

Erm that's my point. Why has this genius only arrived at this conclusion two days ago?

Because there's questions of timings and looking at the data and how numbers are going.

I'm sure he knows more about it than you.

There's no way any country was going to stop flights in February. None. Italy's first death was on February 21st.
How could you expect Ireland or any other country to ban flights and close borders at that stage?
Why would the professor you quote call for it then either.

The spread that happened was not as predictable as you make out and nobody back then not even you could predict it with any certainty.

They also banned export of medical equipment and gear in the early stages although this is now lifted.

Still waiting on your "close the borders" plan.

Still waiting on what YOU think on this issue?

If we had acted early enough - we wouldnt had even more of our own homegrown eejits jetting off on holiday simply because they could.

And even quarentining the returning gob****es who had decided to head off in the midst of a global epidemic

But sure we weren't allowed to close boarders according to our EU masters - even whilst they were closing theirs off

You couldnt making it up tbh ...

I thought Scientists debunked the warm weather thing with absolute certainty.

There could be other factors at play, such as British people's immune systems being massively boosted by long hours of sunshine in summer.

Simply looking at it and saying 'Covid is found in warm countries' may be missing the point. A lot of such places, especially nearer to the equator, are warm and sunny all year round and you might not see the dramatic winter / summer effect you find in the UK and Ireland.

Stop trying to deflect. Give us your plans for "closing the border". It's a simple question. You can't constantly call for something and have no rational.

A potentially encouraging piece of research from University College London :

The coronavirus outbreak could be stifled by warm English May weather, a new study from UCL has indicated.

Researchers found that infections from three common coronaviruses followed a seasonal pattern in England, with large numbers occurring during winter and at roughly the same time as influenza.

Cases peaked in February but only small amounts of the virus were transmitted in the summer months, with infections dropping rapidly from May and not ramping up again until the end of the year.

Over 5000 cases in Florida and the temp today is 25 degress C.

Does anyone know why it's almost impossible to get grapefruit ? I didn't think it was rated among the more popular fruits yet my local Tesco is constantly out of it .
Do people think it wards off the dreaded virus (lol) or what's the story ?

I dunno, but a lot of people don't know that grapefruit can negatively impact a lot of medication.
Erm that's my point. Why has this genius only arrived at this conclusion two days ago?

Extra.ie reported on this 2 days ago. Not that this genius only arrived at it 2 days ago.

Christ, some people have been banging on about closing borders for years, for various different reasons.

WHO classed this as a pandemic 21 days ago. You want the border closed 6 weeks ago? Why not 8? Why not 24?

It's all very well saying "Close the borders!!!!one!1!!111!!" but the people that actually have to deal with this generally have a lot more to weight up than you deciding to open a car window or not.

I don’t think they needed to do much research. It’s long been known that viruses don’t survive or transmit as well in warm bright weather. The don’t like UV light. That’s why seasonal flu is seasonal. It could be that Covid will follow that pattern, we just don’t know yet as it’s a new virus. The danger is that if everyone is cooped up in their homes we may not get the benefit of the warm sunshine.

Ah the Italians that came for the Rugby. How many actually did? Also how many came from the hot zone of North Italy.

if the Irish were told to self-isolate then why wouldn't the Italians have been?
How do you know there were confirmed cases in regard to Italian's spreading the virus rapidly in Dublin?

The virus was mostly brought in by the Irish, who probably ignored self-isolation requests and it's now in the community and that's where the focus should be.

Going on about flights that are now empty is just achieving nothing.

Check out my reply above : a country that is warm and sunny all year round is unlikely to see 'seasonal' changes in a corona type virus i.e. it's not the warm weather per se that kills the virus, but the seasonal change in temperature and how it impacts on the immune system.

Western Canadian Select heavy oil price benchmark fell 30.5 per cent on Thursday to US$6.45 per barrel, which analysts joke is less than a pint of beer. U.S. crude prices fell 7.7 per cent to US$22.60 per barrel.

“Prices are so low that there’s no point in transporting if you don’t have to. If you can move it into storage, you will,” said Stephanie Kainz, senior associate at RS Energy Group, a division of Austin, Tex.-based Enverus.

They're might be some truth in it tho. If you look at the past few days the numbers have been falling and if you look say at Australia who are in the middle of their summer the rate of spread is quiet low. Also Italy the spread was far worse i the cooler damper north of Italy. I know the theory isn't solid but maybe as we come into the spring summer months the figures may drop.

    Incorrect and wrong.

We are not part of Schengen.

Exceptional measures as required. See Germany closing its borders for details.

But sure little ol' Ireland only does what's its told by the same ...

    I really think it's a myth.

It's not summer in Australia for one thing.

Also, how come the virus survives inside the body with temperature of 37 degrees?

You might want to check the temperatures where it is rampant right now.
