Jeez! Do you spend all day on this thing?!! There were so many posting earlier that 30 secs after I posted it the thread had moved on 3 pages!

Nope have a life, but easy to see the posters asking the same questions over and over again despite being given an answer, like your ones about flights. Say hi to gems for me btw.

They are very clear. They are going Up at a very fast rate.
People in ICU tripled over 2 days last week.
Critical that they don't get out of hand quickly as the HSE don't have the ventilator situation sorted, despite the fact they are manufactured here in Ireland, for reasons only they can answer.

Nope. Incorrect and not just my opinion btw.. Take a listen to today's briefing and questions asked by the journalists present. The figures given are far from clear.

I've been in the local Tesco and the local Supervalue. These places may be busy early on but by early afternoon I'm finding them with no queues and plenty of space. Social distancing was really not an issue. People picking things up and putting them down was the only irritation

That's why people are in there in the morning :):):)

The PHD comment was sarcasm as in it took the guy a PHD and a month and a half after the virus exploded in Europe and infected the sh1t out of Ireland to decide that maybe the borders should be closed.

Again you're missing the point. Weeks after the decision should've been taken and well into the virus getting in amongst our population, an expert in this field says that perhaps we should close the borders!

    Don't you get it!!!
Have you ever considered that maybe the guy with the PHD knows more about the situation than you do?

You can't close the border to Irish citizens, it'd be unconstitutional.

    Nobody's talking about Irish citizens.

Would it have been unconstitutional to close the border to thousands of Italians at the time or would it have been common sense?

People do like drama and scaremongering. None of what they are saying is almost true. The curve is flattening cases and deaths will get lower and Ireland will be back again.

Well you're calling for "close the borders" without conditions. Please lay out your conditions for everyone.

The article you quoted, says we should be looking at it and i'm sure it's being looked at but not being chosen now.
Also, he has only said this over the last couple of days not a month or two ago.

    Don't you get it?

I think the government has been good to listen to the scientists on this and pretty much followed their advice.

Going on about flights and melodramtic claims without any evidenced based back up that the country is 'riddled' is just hyperbole in my opinion.

Why weren't our borders closed other than to bring citizens home 6 weeks ago?

Didn't think that was a thing. Can he get in that position? He's an elderly man.

Well you can't beat a bit of double entendre.

There's none in this song though.

Yes, due to EU freedom of movement regulatoins.

Also, who are these thousands of Italians?

Can you not accept that it's more likely brought to this country by the thousands of Irish coming back, most likely from ski trips.

The source is Simon Coveney, An Tanaiste, he said it on Claire Byrne Show tonight.
Start of last week they were at 2,000 per day and aimed to get to 5,000 quickly and then hit 15,000.

I wish people could provide sources of why they state the testing numbers are lower

No this is all about testing being completed in labs as lab capacity is the issue.
Taking a swab is not the actual test.

As the old saying goes - between the aim and the bowl - there tends to be a lot of piss ...

I know that taking a swab is not the test. What makes you believe otherwise????

The shortage of reagent was detailed as one of the major issues why swabs were not being analysed atm.

So 5000 is not the actual number completed per day. Good thats cleared up anyway.

Watch todays briefing and the questions asked about this issue if you are in any further doubt...

The most important thing THEY DON'T tell you is that each country has different capabilities for dealing with a pandemic and the associated high levels of critical ICU care required (9-11% in Italy).

This is rated in numbers of ICU beds per million. We are one of the lowest rated in Europe.

    Italy - 125 per million.

    Ireland - 50 per million.

Italy have been triaging from an early stage. Worrying.
Yes. Many factors to take into consideration.

We came a little late to the party but introduced measures relatively early in the outbrake. My hope is that antivirals can be introduced in time which may prevent overloading of the ICU beds.

Today is the second day the global total did not grow significantly. It is more than yesterday but the second day to be less than the day before that. 61k worldwide today, 60k yesterday, 67k the day before that

How many cases have been caused by not closing them ? The Irish themselves have caused the clusters , people returning from skying holidays, which included nurses and doctors. The government know where the majority of cases in this country have stemmed from and it’s from Irish citizens themselves coming back from infected areas.

When we look back at this, there will be several who won't come out of this very well and certainly not as good as twitter bots and pro government forum accounts would have you believe. I like a good speech as much as the next man, actions speak stronger though.

    Here's one for example.
People do like drama and scaremongering. None of what they are saying is almost true. The curve is flattening cases and deaths will get lower and Ireland will be back again.

We all knew the limits of our healthcare system through decades of political parties refusing to fix it.

There have been several stumbling points and missed opportunities both at planning and procurement level and the knock on that has had on testing and isolation, and containment. The fact that we are an island, we had ample opportunities to close off on essential traffic in and out.

The next month is going to be very difficult.

A potentially encouraging piece of research from University College London :

The coronavirus outbreak could be stifled by warm English May weather, a new study from UCL has indicated.

Researchers found that infections from three common coronaviruses followed a seasonal pattern in England, with large numbers occurring during winter and at roughly the same time as influenza.

Cases peaked in February but only small amounts of the virus were transmitted in the summer months, with infections dropping rapidly from May and not ramping up again until the end of the year.

I thought Scientists debunked the warm weather thing with absolute certainty.
