What's the best measure of comparison? Deaths per million of population probably the most effective i think. Current standings:
    Ireland 3.91
    UK 8.72

    Most statistics are per 1000.

Another one to look at is tests per 1000 people.

UK is at 1.5 population which is below average.

Testing is a very poor measure a different countries are using very different criteria. Numbers in ICU and deaths, if reported correctly, will be the two critical measures.

This idiot has caused thousands of deaths with his prevaricating and bullsh*t. Weeks behind other countries in terms of taking necessary measures. The hospitals are starting to fill now today; in a week’s time we’ll be in deep sh*t.

    I’m seething and despondent.

The pictures of that wayward chap Cummings belting out the back door and sprinting down the road are like a tragic comedy.
He must have heard they're all coming down with it in number 10, and got his running shoes on, quick sharp.

Imo they've handled this very well so far. We will fair a lot better than quite a number of countries. People for the most part are doing their bit. Now it's tighter measures. The virus will slow down considerably if people do what they are told.

I would suggest that in London, the biggest **** up was reducing the number of tube trains and increasing the number of people per carriage.

You can't criticise them like that, clearly, bigotry is the motivation behind that type of comment.

Chief Medical Officer has it, The Health Minister has it

He'll go down in history as one of the greatest PM's. He battled the EU and won and he has battled this Chinese virus with courage (despite being hit by it himself). I can only imagine what his predecessor would have done. Can one surrender to a virus I wonder?

For courage, read stupidity for not taking it seriously enough quickly enough. As for the rest of that bluster, it's not worth responding to.

Yeah no doubt reducing tube services was a factor, as was that twat Said Khan telling people carry on as normal. I’m on the committee for the St Patrick’s Day parade in London and after it was cancelled Khan was whinging asking for the decision to be reconsidered.

But why were the tubes so full of construction workers and other non essential workers? Why were multimillionaire construction conglomerates allowed to carry on building blocks luxury flats in central London? Why so long for self employed people to be extended help allowing them to stay home?

How come when every other country was calling off public gatherings we were hosting Cheltenham and football matches and rock concerts? Why did our schools stay open so long? Why did we shut down pubs and venues a week later than other countries? Why did we ignore calls from frontline NHS workers asking for more PPE and more preparedness?

We had the example of Italy to follow, and the example of Spain’s rising death toll to inform us. Johnson ignored it and went from “herd immunity” to lockdown far too late. This will cost lives. The hospitals are filling up as we speak. The next week is going to be hell.

Birmingham Airport is now a mortuary in waiting.

Are you talking about the uk? Seriously?

Horse bolted over two weeks ago. They are only taking it seriously now.

    Inept, incompetence.

Probably the wrong way to say it, but I'll lay a bet that the UK will have 15,000+ deaths by end of April

FYI - Head of NHS is Simon Stevens, probably too excited revelling in the misery of others to check before posting.

It's an exponential curve and strengthening all the time. It could be much worse than that unless they can reduce population contacts. Remember as well Londan is a city of huge population and in a relatively small area compared to Dublin.

Brexit was a self-inflicted wound and now this is another one orchestrated by the same group of people. But the brits will probably still vote tory!

No. South Korean success was in large due to a large scale testing, isolation of clusters and quarantine.

    Korea - 45 tests per 1000
Italy - about 5 right now
    UK - 1.5

The UK esp for its large cities should have mimicked South Korea closely from weeks ago. Testing and vigourously tracing all the contacts.

London is going to be an issue due to the density. It's the epicentre on top.
In Lombardy it was all towns and smaller cities. Not Rome of something like that.
Madrid is infested which is also an issue because it's a large urban area. Spain is not looking good at all.

UK reported cases were at the same level as Irish reported cases 10 days ago. There's at least 3 weeks go to in the UK until it peaks, and Ireland is a few weeks behind because of less exposure to China.

Both countries will get through it, but there's no evidence at this juncture to suggest that the UK is going to be substantially worse off than other European countries including Ireland.

It's pretty obvious that their poor leadership has made a balls of it and have acted slowly. Herd immunity was some statement.

5,000,000 tube trips in London every day.

Was talking about Ireland. The UK have made a balls of it. Well, that's what it looks like at this stage anyway. Final death count will be the real judgement I guess. Doesn't look good for them anyway.

Anyone find it a coincidence that the 3 top people for this crisis are all in the news that they have it on the same day the news broke that the UK missed out on ordering more ventilators?

Seeing Dominic Cummings running out of No.10 doesn't bode well...

Ah, that's different. It's a UK thread, so was confused.

These new restrictions will have a big affect on me, (and everyone else), but I 100% agree with them.

Pity for all the Irish people in the uk who are led by a self centered egotistical selfish fool.

That is scarcely believable. Total incompetence and the words attributed to Cummings about the death of elderly people will certainly come back to make him a figure of intense hate

It's the totally casual attitude of that statement that shocks. "Look, we'd like to have got some of those ventilators [without which people will almost certainly die] but someone messed up the email [leave open the possibility that it could have been EU's screw up, you never know, people might buy it], sure what can you do? We might try again the next time, if we think of it in time. No biggie."

Just an utterly appalling fcuk up when 1000s of lives are at stake.

As an Irish person in the UK.

I genuinely don't think there's any good evidence to suggest that the UK response will yield worse results than other countries. The impact of the social distancing measures will take a few weeks to materialise.

There's a brand new hospital opening in the Excel in London at the weekend. They are converting the NEC in Birmingham and another venue in Manchester plus having made over 33,000 beds available in other hospitals.

At the moment I'm very thankful that they've not brought in the 2km from home restriction here. I've been walking about 6km every lunchtime for my own sanity during the working week and plan to get outside for a few hours this afternoon. I live on the green belt so there shouldn't be too many around and the weather is glorious.

Signs of hope from Wuhan that life can start emerging in the next 9 weeks or so.
