Custom Dell T3500 slow renders

Hey all,

Names Alec, editor & VFX artist (student). So I have an old T3500 with its native xeon processor & 12gb of RAM. On top of that i chucked in a 1TB SSD and an Nvidia Quadro 5000.

By all accounts this thing should be fairly capable of doing bits and bobs in premiere as well as light after effects considering both are fairly RAM & Processor heavy neither are running great and have fairly slow render times.

Any suggestions on how to make them run better or what I'm missing?

You're not missing anything but it's a decade old PC.

The processor was decent years ago although by today's standards, it's the thing slowing you down.

If you haven't already done so, try stick in a HD that you can use as a dedicated cache for Premiere - an SSD if possible. Are the project files running off a secondary disk - not the OS disk?

Yeah sorry forgot to mention, HDD already installed.

I know the machine and processor are old a hell, but at the same time were talking about struggling to playback proxies at the minute.

Before giving it its mild upgrade I gave it a dust & clean, full format & update to win10.

I'm not asking for it to run motion tracking like a pro, but confused as to why I cant get a proxy timeline to go smooth.

Looking at CPU Benchmark the processor is extremely weak to the point of been worse than a 350 euro laptop.. That processor score

Just good enough for Microsoft office work, browsing and streaming really.

Compare it to a Ryzen 2600 which costs 107 pounds.

The processor is dated but not THAT bad. It's basically a first gen i7, quad core eight thread. The Ryzen 2300U for example that you would get in a €400 laptop is not anywhere near twice as fast, though it's obviously way, way more efficient.

Do you have a budget available? A new Ryzen 2600 build with 16GB of DDR4 RAM would cost a few hundred for cpu/board/ram/power supply/case. You can carry over your Quadro for now and the 1TB SSD.
