Speaker wires

Hi all,

I have a room wired underfloor with generic speaker cables and would like to use an old Surround sound system with them (HTS-3568).

The problem is the system uses proprietary connectors, kind of like these

I still have the original cables that came with the speakers that have the proprietary connectors.

1) Do I just cut the ends of my original cables, twist the wires together and put some tape around them?

2) On one of the connectors, the wire is broken right at the connector (so nothing to twist). It doesn't look like there is anyway to release the little bit of cable left inside and insert a new one. Should I solder or be looking to cut open the plastic casing of the connector?

Just twisting wires together is not a good way to connect them. Either solder or a good crimp connection.

Re the broken wire, if you cut off the connector, do you have another to replace it with?

So for the crimping, do both wires go into a connector and then get crimped.
By connector I mean something rom this

Yes they are crimped connectors, the plastic end is usually heat shrink too

Could you take some pictures of the connector with the broken wire, there might be a not too obvious way to release the wire

The plastic casing is completely solid with no little holes where you could poke a pin in.

I was thinking maybe trying to solder onto the end with frayed wires and tape over it.

Doubt you'd get any connection worth soldering there. Have you tried prying out the inner connection with a pair of needle nose pliers or similar

Those connectors release with a fine pick pushed in, there will be a locking tab holding the metal connector in place, don't cut the connector to get them out just probe the back with a pin and see if they will release.

I had thought that alright. IT would be so much simple if I was able to remove the old wire, crimp the new wire and insert it in the connector.

The casing is solid (no holes) but I tried inserting a pin and jiggling it around a bit in both ends but the wire wouldn't release. I was afraid of damaging the connector so gave up in the end.

It'll be another couple of weeks before I get round to messing with it again but might give it another go first.
