Just seen that 10,000 people were tested in Ireland. We already have 683 cases. Looks like a minimum (not counting todays figures) of 6.83% of the population have Coronavirus. That's about 330,000 people have it here and it's growing fast.
Italy has a mortality rate of 9%. Apply the same here and there could easily be nearly 30,000 deaths in Ireland alone from this. This looks like a huge moment in history.

Apologise, I retract my statement. As other posters pointed out. The majority of the 10,000 tested showed symptoms so the 6.83% cannot be applied to the whole population. If 10,000 were picked at random it would be very alarming.

Absolutely, but the number is very welcome. What we wouldn't have wanted to hear tonight is 200+ new cases.

Don't get me wrong, it's good news, but if we want to have any idea of whether or not we are flattening the curve to any degree, we are going to have to wait a week before the relevant numbers start coming in.

I've been to China, worked with loads of Chinese people, have had very good friends from there.

It doesn't mean it's unacceptable to point the finger at the country who started all of this out of a blatant disregard for human life and health.

I'm tired of people pulling out the racism card to shirk responsibility for what their country has done.

Obviously picking on individuals is absolutely wrong and nobody should do that, but if I want to express my disgust towards the place and their culture, I will.

LOL it's like playing gob****e bingo. You make it too easy

That means 785 out of the 10,000 have the virus

Nah, Simon will be out again tomorrow and any other ministers interviewed, repeating the mantra, info booklet coming our way too.

Anyways, I find it bizarre that people in Ireland are complaining about China while it's doing fuk all to stop the spread. Asia locked up shop when they realised what was happening and Europe hasn't. Surely the greater fault of a country is in its reaction to the crisis rather than the one citizen who started it.

We can and will complain about both, don’t know why you feel the need to be defensive. Expect a lot more focus on China during and after the crisis as it affects more and more people. There has been loads of complaints about our government too, they’re not exclusive.

As someone that's spent months in China over a few trips, I find the attitude here to be pretty sad. If not unexpected. I've also never seen anyone eating bats or the like. People should try to educate themselves on other cultures before making idiots of themselves - online or otherwise.

It comes with the territory for most people to generalize .....All Chinese will eat your pets, all Indians are dirty, all of Italy is old, all Muslims are terrorists, all Irish are alcoholic and so on

The real story is that this excellent health service has been over run by the virus.
We need to keep our focus on that.

If any health service could easily handle a Pandemic the for 99.99...% of the time there would be hundreds of doctors nurses etc wandering around with nothing to do and the general public crying out about how it was such a waste of money

It's promising compared to the UK. But we have to double our efforts to try and keep numbers down.

Please god we're seeing the positive results of heightened awareness and then the shutdown starting to flatten the curve, as our testing is increasing significantly. We'll see, give it a few days worth of data, but really positive now to have two days where it's lower than the previous.

Way too early to read anything into charts. We wont see the benfit of social distancing yet for at least another week to 2 weeks.

Far far too early. Hold on to the high fives till May at least.

    And 2 metres apart

Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue

Fantastic news 2 days in a row. I think any country that had 3 decreases in a row essentially turned the tide on it completely. Hopefully we get a 3rd decrease tomorrow.

People keep saying that, yet before all this I never heard the Italian health system used as a model to aspire to.

Just because you have never heard of it doesn't really make a difference. North Italy is a rich area and they have am excellent health system.

You're dead right, I did think that.. then I was trying to avoid putting pressure on others, but I should be grand now until Tesco arrive, judicious shopping helped so I'll cook smart and make do till then!

Just thinking, maybe a golf umbrella could become a tool of shopping? When at the till, tuck it under your arm, that will provide a barrier behind you.

Think I might be doing the same going forward :)

As I say, don't read too much into it however I think we should be seeing some impact of social distancing already given that new cases do incubate and get tested before 14 days. But yes, lets hold on to our hats still and not be surprised if it trends up again. But also take good signs and feel a bit of relief too, for a moment, that it might not get as bad as worst case.

They can really make the numbers say whatever they want, if they only tested 102 people today and they were all positive it would paint a completely different pic to testing 3500 and getting 102

People realise that these are our numbers from 2 days ago right? ... ie of the people tested on Thursday 102 confirmed cases...

102 is not that bad considering it was 191 couple days ago

The system crashed earlier in the week so maybe having an effect?

    I don't think so.

In fact if the numbers were continuing to rise I think people would start claiming distancing is pointless.

In reality I think.the current results are from cases that were "baked in" before we started to seek to restrict person to person contact but I'll not be turning down any good news where it should present itself.

It spread in China before they knew what was happening. A miniscule percentage of Chinese people eat bats.

The West had all the warnings. People are dying because of inadequate action.

Is this a downward trend? A flattening of the curve? I expect the Vintners Federation to call for pub reopenings if tomorrow's figured continue the trend....

I might have missed it but is there any mention of the number of people in 1CU? That is as significant a stat.

It is but these very small, maybe fleeting, positives are good for the mental component of this virus!
