I'm not an expert here, but I think it's important to remember that the 793 people who died in Italy in the past 24 hours didn't contract the virus in the past 24 hours and die. I don't know exactly how long this virus takes to kill on average in lethal cases, but many of those who died likely got infected last week or before.

The day-on-day number of deaths is likely to increase for a while yet, but hopefully it increases by less every day. Then, eventually, it should start to decrease, but there'll be a lag in us seeing those sort of numbers I think.

Tomorrow it will be higher than 793 in all likelihood. People shouldn't be surprised, or take it as an indication that Italy is getting worse.

Bat is just a meat, if they were cultivated on a farm you'd not be moaning.

Bats are well known incubators of lots and lots of viruses - so big difference from a cow
These flying mammals host over 60 zoonotic viruses. This is rivaled only by rodents that carry a wide range of bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and helminths (worms)

    Mind your own business

    But it's fukcing disgusting

Was illegal (afaik) for a while in Dublin anyway to prevent the spread of TB

i just saw that, i couldnt believe it. 627 yesterday,

surely that 793 must include yesterdays figure?

Sadly, no. Bear in mind that those dying now were infected maybe two weeks ago when the number of cases was much lower. The figures for Italy are going to get much worse over the next few weeks, made even worse by the fact that hospital will be overwhelmed and no longer able to offer care to all.

We don’t eat rats do we??? Precisely because some animals live and travel in places that have all sorts of bacteria - all meat is not the same.

Was in my local small town there now, West of Ireland. All the shops doing well distancing keeping kept properly, every till in the smallest shop has a wooden frame with plastics window covering every till and all operators have gloves. Practically every person had either a mask or a snood/scarf

Passed the beach on the road home and it teaming with kids and their parents in what looked to be 30/40s all surfing and running up and down the beach, selfish utter cnuts these parents are :(

"You try entertaining kids couped up inside!" They'll say

Fcuk off for yourselves this is more important

Its surely safer out in the open on a windy day in the west of Ireland than stuck in school. Isnt one of the reasons the flu drops off in the summer is because we are all outside.

    But it's not, is it?
Same goes for some varieties of exotic bushmeat, it's not raised and slaughtered under controlled conditions.

That's not the case at all, the numbers don't add up. If 700+ were dying from cases that started two weeks ago it would make the fatality rate much much higher than 4-5%. Italy had 4.5k cases two weeks ago.

I don’t see why other countries won’t be as bad as Italy if they don’t follow advice being given

Two reasons. One, Italy has a disproportionate number of elderly people who are most at risk. More at-risk people equals more deaths. Two, Italy's health system makes ours look world class and Italy is broke.

I read 1-15 days to ventilation if required , 15-19 days to death

Don’t forget swine flu! The Spanish flu came from pig to human transmission on a farm

Well over 10000 tests is pretty impressive in fairness and with loads more kits available.
    6.5m medical masks en route.

Next steps I guess is closing non essential businesses? Curfews? Only being allowed out to visit grocery shop and chemists?

We shouldn't take it as getting worse? 50 more people dying? It is getting worse. The median time between onset of symptoms and death is ~20 days. The median incubation period is 5 days.

It is getting worse categorically. This is a result of decisions made 25 days ago. While we can't change that. We should take note.

I think people should stop trying to predict a country's growth based on Italy's.

The Spanish flu is thought to have come from farmed pigs that infected humans

Italys health system is better than ours. Twice as many ICU beds per capita than here or the UK.

That depends very much on how and when they do their testing and if the subjects are already showing symptoms.
Anyway, my comment still applies. There are far more new cases daily now and that has its consequences later.
