The vast majority of posts here for the past 3 week have been about how it can't possibly get bad here usually quoting one of the following......
    • population density is different
    • we don't eat bats
    • we don't live with family etc
    • da virus doesn't like the cold
    • it only kills old people
    • 80% are mild even if includes pneumonia

It has and it is getting that bad. I realise some peoples way of coping with it is to minimise. That is not an effective strategy. Just deal with it as best you can.

Has the Pope made any public statements about what is happening worldwide and Italy in particular? On a personal level he must be getting worried as he is in the highest risk age group and as far as I know has some health issues. Same also applies to Benedict more so in fact..

Slow car crash , are we waiting to see that our strategy has failed when the virus is rampant in advanced European countries?
No, they've applied measures which will take a few weeks to have an effect. That date of review is from the week after next. In the meantime we are ramping up to 15000 tests a day. That will identify a lot of new cases but will also result in more isolated infected as well.

Following Italy's path is a worst case scenario. Comparing populations, if we followed the same trajectory as Italy, we would have 4000 cases. It's simple maths.
    Simplistic math.

Can anyone explain why Italy’s death rate is completely sky rocketing, devastating for them, why on earth with the restrictions in place is the death rate still rising astronomically? What is it that is making Italy so susceptible to this virus

Yes, he said he asked God to end the virus.

I recognise this but I do feel we should be much more proactive as the evidence in Europe so far is that this is unstoppable.

Do any of the numbers people here want go put all this in perspective? It seems every day the numbers going up everywhere, deaths in our own countries, celebrity cases etc. But still what are the chances of you being affected by this in a country of millions? 5 mil in Ireland, over 60 mil here in uk. There are 12 million over 60s in uk alone. So what are the chances - 1 in 5? 1 in 3? Worse?

The amount of serious cases is surpassing the ability of the health service to cope. Leading to preventable deaths in normal circumstances to sky rocket. The curve has not flattened enough :(

I feel that the health system is just completely overwhelmed. There is only so much care possible to give to people. They are doing their best. Doctors in Italy have never seen anything like this and are appealing to other countries to lockdown or they will be the same. We still have no quarantine, screening or flight restrictions. I’m still struggling to understand why. The slower this takes off over here the more manageable it will be. The large influx of cases Italy is experiencing has overwhelmed the health care system

You clearly don't understand that using google translate you can copy and paste a URL (thing at the top of your browser starting with www) into google translate. Then click on the link. E VOILA (that's French) It's there for you to read.

I post this to highlight I'm concerned with transparency and real news. We can all learn something new every day. I've learned so much since this **** show started.

    E VOILA is not French
    Et Voilà is.

Overwhelmed health service so people are dying who normally wouldn't.

It's natural to hope and be optimistic.

Just because something happens in one place doesn't mean it will repeat elsewhere.

If you're such an expert in epidemics and pandemics why are you posting on here instead of working with the WHO or HSE.

Fact is you're just predicting or guessing, you don't know.

Majority of the English death toll is in London area I presume?

Italy keeps getting worse. Can our government not see that? I don't like the sound of a lockdown but something has to be done if people aren't going to stay away from each other.

Italy has a population about 13 times that of Ireland.

If we reach the same point as Italy this morning (4,032 deaths) the
equivalent would be 310 deaths in Ireland.

I am sure we would be concerned about that number but there would still be people who would say that it is no the end of the world and that just 2 years road deaths and flu kills more and I still have to walk the dog etc.,

I am just hoping this will turn around in Italy soon. If not the numbers we see in a weeks time will make today's look like peanuts.

Best case Evens, worst case 4/5.

That's got to go some way to explaining it however the mortality figures are way higher than other countries. I don't have the maths but I wonder how the percentage of Italian elderly population and their mortality rate compares to say Spanish/French/Swiss (I cite these as climate, genetics and health service wouldn't be a million miles apart).

Is there the possibility that there's something else effecting the Italians such as a strong MRSA strain in the hospitals or some other bacteria that has been lying benign within the Italians?

Like others have said, older population combined with overwhelmed health service and it takes time to get bad enough to kill someone so the death rates will be going up for weeks after the lockdown was enacted, people who are dying now will have caught it weeks ago.

It doesnt sound too bad when you say it like that but imagine the panic when we get to ~50 deaths a day.

The scariest thing in Italy is they locked down places in Lombardy very early on. Whereas the rest of us are still arsing about on bloody social distancing and a few closures. FFS Italy is going to be everyone! It is now too late.

The constant stream of flights from Paris, London, Zurich, Lisbon so on and on and on are a worry also. This is how the virus spread worldwide, surely the biggest weapon against the virus is to cut off it's Free Air Miles
