Headline on today's Irish Examiner says "Italy's healthcare system nears breaking point".... how exactly is it "near" breaking point? Saying it's near breaking point is for the common flu gone especially bad or something, what could possibly be worse than how it is?

627 new deaths today, they're sending patients to other countries, total lack of equipment, triage situation (allowing some people to die) - what exactly would breaking point be if they aren't at it now? I think it's fair to say they went past breaking point long ago, they're now trying to do the best they can with a broken system.

Breaking point is when all ICU beds are taken, and it has not been reached.

Italy has a system that can transfer ICU patients to another city or even region (by military plane if necessary).

ICU beds are still being created; for example, today the field hospital setup by American NGO Samaritan's Purse has just opened up.

luckily we won't get it as bad as wuhan or else we would be screwed

What makes you think that? This is only starting.

Would be interesting to know what the recovered numbers are. Because the case totals now wont be the active ones

  • Has anyone any reliable data on how much testing we're doing vs other countries?

Can anyone who know of pubs open call the guards please. I know it's not illegal but guaranteed the publican will close if the guards have a strong word.

Dublin: 27% of the population. 51% of the cases.
Cork: 11% of the population. 15% of the cases.
Wicklow: 3% of the population. 3% of the cases.
Limerick: 4% of the population. 3% of the cases.

Dublin's confirmed cases are significantly higher per head of population than anywhere else in the country. Limerick's are surprisingly low given the fears when we discovered an infected doctor was working in the A&E a week before his diagnosis but apparently he wasn't infectious at that point or was practicing excellent hygiene.

Also wondering are we getting the details of cases that actually occurred in Dublin or Cork or are we looking at cases that are in major hospitals in Dublin or Cork ?

We appear to be beating Italy in rate and likely to beat Varadkar's 15,000 prediction if this keeps up.

McDonnell and Corbyn are spitting feathers!

McDonnell was speechless on the BBC news earlier.

So the number of new today was lower than yesterday but if(heavy lifting here) the number of new cases doesn't double of triple over the weekend is there scope however small to be hopeful ? The people in my life aren't that annoyed over the social distancing it's the fact they are hoping for a glimmer of hope that we won't get like Italy or Spain and we may be able to reopen stuff on a phased basis in a couple of months. That may be wishful thinking but my family can't be that much different to anyone else's.

We are not China and hopefully never will be.

We don’t need to be like China to control the virus. See Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Macau, Singapore, Vietnam and even South Korea. Seriously learn from their experiences and adhere to the guidelines from the HSE. Everyone just do their bit, and don’t worry about some assholes next door who didn’t follow the guideline

Why do we need more Gardai? What are they doing to tackle coronavirus?

I mean the pubs are closed, very little in the way of public disorder. Even the scumbags appear to be self isolating. Roads are very quite leading to less road collisions and harder to do people for driving over the limit! I'm not sure what the rush was to get them out of templemore.

To those suggesting social distancing isn't working.

The schools are closed along with colleges and all other education centres.

Pubs are closed. There is no nightlife at the minute.

Every group, sports club, community organisation etc is no longer happening or training or meeting up.

There are no mass gatherings, matches etc.

There are no weddings, funerals, communions, confirmations etc with crowds together.

Many people are out of work or working from home.

These are huge restrictions and will surely make a difference

And again, maybe I'm wrong but perhaps the boards posters generally speaking don't appreciate this as many spend much time indoors, on computers etc anyway?

The only further restriction we have is to stop people going out doors.

As of yet this hasn't been necessary and hopefully will not be.

But to suggest there are not restrictions in place that could make a difference is foolish in the extreme, even if some people are not quite adhering as best they could.

On a final point, is there anything worse than the old biddies sitting on their computer moaning about a few teenagers having a chat with their friends. They're only kids who are already putting up with huge restrictions on their lives. How would you have felt at 16 if you were told to spend the next two months with nobody only your family. Give the whinging a break.

    Thanks for the update.

What does it mean when Tony says some are hospitalised for public health reasons rather than clinical reasons?

To stop them spreading the virus. Its easier keep them in hospital and limit the chance of them wandering.

We need to get everyone on board, don the Green Jersey and start calling out some of the idiocy around people refusing to social distance.

If you're ignoring this stuff, you're not being some kind of 'badass' you're being a f**ing moron and frankly need to be told you are.

Any chance we could roll out some high impact adverts similar to the drink driving ones?

    Particularly Taiwan.

My friend is living over there and he said it's not bad at all. That they have handled it brilliantly

Wouldn't pay too much attention to the numbers today.

In a week it will clearer.

With 20,000 people coming back from Spain this week.

And the fact that people here still haven't copped on to how serious this is we will go up again with numbers.

The average person just doesn't seem to grasp exactly what China did to get on top of this. I live near a park and the constant stream of people in and out of it all week that I can see from my living room window is outrageous.

Literally no one was on the streets of Wuhan/Hubei for months. The only activity on the streets were trucks disinfecting them.

I'm not sure we have the capability or desire to get rid of this in the manner China did.

This will never happen here because if it did we'd have an even bigger problem than the virus.

Do you have any idea of the control the Chinese government has.

Theres a start but read about the mass detention, internment and concentration camps in that country.

Let me repeat, they intern people into concentration camps.

So you want Ireland to become like wuhan china ? Maybe it's just me but I'd prefer to not even get within an arses roar of the worst countries with this virus.

It's really in case we do go to full lockdown then they will be making sure people are not out + about.

Is it illegal for pubs to be open? I know of one ...

Report to guards - be a shock waiting for him next time he's before the courts for renewal

Preparing for worst case scenario ie. full on lockdown and enforcing people to stay in. Better be prepared for an eventuallty that may or may not happen.
