To those suggesting social distancing isn't working.

The schools are closed along with colleges and all other education centres.

Pubs are closed. There is no nightlife at the minute.

Every group, sports club, community organisation etc is no longer happening or training or meeting up.

There are no mass gatherings, matches etc.

There are no weddings, funerals, communions, confirmations etc with crowds together.

Many people are out of work or working from home.

These are huge restrictions and will surely make a difference

And again, maybe I'm wrong but perhaps the boards posters generally speaking don't appreciate this as many spend much time indoors, on computers etc anyway?

The only further restriction we have is to stop people going out doors.

As of yet this hasn't been necessary and hopefully will not be.

But to suggest there are not restrictions in place that could make a difference is foolish in the extreme, even if some people are not quite adhering as best they could.

On a final point, is there anything worse than the old biddies sitting on their computer moaning about a few teenagers having a chat with their friends. They're only kids who are already putting up with huge restrictions on their lives. How would you have felt at 16 if you were told to spend the next two months with nobody only your family. Give the whinging a break.

I don’t think people going out door is an issue.
I haven’t seen anybody complain about a parent kicking a ball around with their kid or going for a walk.
It’s the groups meeting up and different families coming together in groups that are an issue !

Jesus you’d swear we’re asking teens to go to war or something. It’s just asking them not hang out in a group. Nobody is saying don’t go into your back garden or don’t cycle your bike. Teen nowadays have phones and iPads so can keep in contact with their friends.

Is it illegal for pubs to be open? I know of one ...

No, but they were saying on VM news that Gardai could object to the next license renewal because of it

Anyone else notice the scumbags getting more aggressive? Had one articulate fellow threathen to box my head off today after I refused to give him 2 euro.

Can they sense something is stirring or are they just going into withdrawal and getting crazy?

I think they can more than sense, they are humans after all!

The average person just doesn't seem to grasp exactly what China did to get on top of this. I live near a park and the constant stream of people in and out of it all week that I can see from my living room window is outrageous.

Literally no one was on the streets of Wuhan/Hubei for months. The only activity on the streets were trucks disinfecting them.

I'm not sure we have the capability or desire to get rid of this in the manner China did.

Wasn't that a fake? Yeah, I'm just sympathising with parents of teenagers, won't say I wouldn't let them at the PS4? 5? 24/7 if that's what it takes.

    it's not a fake

The biggest concern out there is social isolation. There are people awaiting tests and awaiting outcome of tests out in the community/ shopping etc. That scares me the most. People need to understand that if you have symptoms and your gp refers you for a test you MUST go into isolation.
    Please follow government guidelines.

So the UK have tonight begun to "nationalise" wages.
There is talk of nationalising industries.
There are rent and mortgage freezes.
There are queues for food shops.
    Empty shelves.
    Curfews and lockdowns incoming.

Jeremy Corbyn must think all his Christmases have come at once!

Do most Italian flights go and come through Dublin only?

Direct flights would only be a % of the traffic - You'd have plenty coming in via other cities too.

We seem to be tracking ahead of Italy in terms of cases (adjusting for time and population) but UK tracking nearly identically with Italy in terms of deaths.

At present the case rate is probably still hard to compare as the criteria for tests is different in different jurisdictions.

It was in DM who talked to her or the person who claimed the video. I tried looking into it last night. I have seen some people in the DM comments stating they knew the person and that it's not fake. I don't think it's fake but you never know. I saw someone claiming the girl has "lung cancer", but that isn't really credible for a 39 year old woman so you can't know who to trust. She would have quite the nerve to pull this if it is fake.

In terms of population, Cork has 542,868, Dublin has 1,348,000

Dublin: 27% of the population. 51% of the cases.
Cork: 11% of the population. 15% of the cases.
Wicklow: 3% of the population. 3% of the cases.
Limerick: 4% of the population. 3% of the cases.

Dublin's confirmed cases are significantly higher per head of population than anywhere else in the country. Limerick's are surprisingly low given the fears when we discovered an infected doctor was working in the A&E a week before his diagnosis but apparently he wasn't infectious at that point or was practicing excellent hygiene.

Its damn shocking how blasé some people are being on all this. Pubs that are supposedly closed letting people in when they knock on the door. Groups congregating still. We are only as strong as the weakest link in all this. Tbh I dont care if these people catch covid-19 and many are in the high risk category but they are then potentially carrying the virus home or in to other community settings eg when out for groceries. It's disheartening when preparing for things to kick off as a frontline healthcare professional to see these efforts undermined.

The lack of understanding of infection control is a concern also. Shop workers being made to wear gloves is more likely to cause the spread of infection as there is a tendency to not swap out gloves or use antimicrobial gels as often. Counting or recieving cash then yes wear gloves but those gloves often dont get removed when then dealing with foodstuffs. You see this happening in general at deli counters but at the moment its especially troubling.

There will be a whole lot of regret that will turn to recrimination if the body count climbs. People will blame government for not doing enough when the real issue will be that some people are ignoring advice. If a worst case scenario doesnt come to pass then its a bonus but nobody should be thinking that this is all an over reaction.

I do think that government warnings need to be stark and blunt rather than the nice 'lets not panic people' bland warnings currently. People dont heed health warnings on smoking, diabetes risk, heart disease etc so a change in this sort of tactic is needed. One thing that many psychologists say is that people need to feel a sense of duty to their own family, their own reputation if they dont heed warnings. With this in mind something like 'be a good mother/father/son/daughter and protect your family by heeding advice. The implication being that not to heed advice makes you a poor parent/son/daughter etc. People would not like that implication and social psychology studies back this up. I would even go as far as showing people struggling to breath in an ICU (if they waived their right to confidentiality). The stark reality of what people could be facing or more what their loved ones could be facing may be what it takes to get everyone to play their part properly and not be the arrogant weak point.

    You've a number 100,000 and 200,000 and a lot that are less than 100,000.

So, obviously you're going to see more cases in Dublin and Cork than anywhere else in Ireland simply because they're the two places with the largest population concentration.

I find Ireland's fixated on using county-by-county comparisons when they're actually not really comparable comparable populations or densities at all.

I heard someone this morning saying "oh sure there's no cases in Leitrim compared to Cork" There are 32,044 in Leitrim and 542,868 in Cork i.e. Cork is nearly 17 times bigger.

It would be useful to stop spread around if we're getting regional areas that are genuinely having lower case loads, but I just found or GAA shirt comparisons sometimes do us no favours.

In simple terms the fact that more doctors are in urban areas and more tests were available will also mean that less dense areas will have lower figures. Transport to laboratories that were already full will mean they will be on the back of the list. I would also suspect that anyone who was displaying serious symptoms would have been transferred to the largest hospital. Are cases determined by location of treatment or home address of patient. So many variables.

Always easy to be negative and hysterical. It's the Irish way.
("OMG I was outside and other people were outside walking! STAY INDOORS YOU FOOLS! LOCKDOWN NOW OR WE ALL DIE!!")

But, I really think we're handling this very well. It's one time it comes in handy to be an island this small
