84 associated with health care workers. Wow

It was to be expected though. Just hope they pull through this.

    191 cases.

    This is it.

See you all on the other side.

So whenever cases are near zero and all the restrictions are lifted, then what?

I'd say they won't be lifting all restrictions in on one fell swoop. If we did manage to suppress cases to that extent ( and it seems a distant prospect on today's figures) it would likely be a piecemeal process of reopening offices etc. and seeing if it has any effect on case numbers.

No I'm not. I wasn't talking about British people, I'm talking about eejits (some in the media) in this country that fawn over things British. There's nothing xenophobic about what I said. Don't be using big words you don't understand unless you're capable of placing them in the correct context.

Don’t patronise me, you meant it as a derogatory statement. There are other posters on here who are from the UK or live there. The brunt of the crisis hasn’t even hit yet but you are all knowing of course.

I can't watch the news just yet but an important figure would be the number of tests carried out. Basically, comparing the number of tests with the number of positive results every day would give us a clearer picture of the spread.

Dr Holohan did warn that we would have to wait until early next week to see how or if social distancing is working.

The high number today might also indicate rapidly increased testing.

How the cock are health case workers getting infected?

They have more protection then the rest of us?

I would absolutely do this- try to get infected deliberately and "get it over with" if there was hard evidence that this grants immunity.

It doesn't; there have been multiple cases of reinfections.

Stop repeating this, it is unproven. Post a source if it is true.

Very few tests had been done since we started testing so the higher numbers are expected with (presumably) an increase in testing.

No need to panic but hopefully this will encourage more people to take the social distancing measures more seriously

So even though the oral exams are one on one they have been cancelled? I would have thought they could have at least managed that, and everyone automatically gets 40%? Crazy.

    why such a big jump?

    Is it more testing?

191 is the equivalent of 2500 to 3000 in one of big European countries. Difficult to explain

Not really. There will be people coming forward who were infected prior to the restrictions taking effect, and more testing is taking place.

There is no doubt at all that the real number of cases is far higher than the recorded positive tests.

This is not a reason to panic. It's a reason to double-down on restricting person-to-person contact.

Don't forget that the new test criteria just kicked in..a rise in detection is to be expected...more tests, more cases

But you're not factoring in the delay between feeling ill, getting a test and getting a resulf.

Various reports put that time period as being anything between 3 - 5 days,so likely we are looking at last Sunday's numbers.

Because their rate of exposure is a lot higher than the rest of us.

Found out yesterday that the lad across the road has it. Delivers for 2 of the local chippers. Might explain the increase.

Is it because they're testing more?

I'd imagine so. The first drive through testing places opened 3 or 4 days ago and results were supposed to take 3-4 days also!

Anyone got a link to a graph since our first case was announced here

So whenever cases are near zero and all the restrictions are lifted, then what? Go about normally until it flares up again and back to social distancing. Rinse and repeat until a vaccine in late 2021?

To be honest this is the current plan both here and in the UK.

Suppress this outbreak as quickly as possible and then hopefully with stronger border controls and better systems in place in terms of testing and tracking we can return somewhat to 'normal' but if a cluster develops in Ireland again we're back to the same measures.

Possibly even if a vaccine is 12 months away there will be medical breakthroughs in anti-virals etc. that would dramatically reduce the severity of the disease and ease pressure on health services.

We would also have the option if we got Ireland clear of the virus to implement what China are currently doing - 14 days secure quarantine for everyone entering the country,

Is that right, 191 today? Christ.

Where's Blueshoe and his "45", shows how much bollox is posted here, not that anyone took it seriously.

Yes ,But remember theres more being tested than last week AND these positives caught their disease from before pubs and schools shut

At 19k tests a day though, when it ramps uptown that level of testing, numbers found positive will soar
But again it's not the test that's making people positive obviously
The positive people in much greater numbers than those tested are already out there and growing

Question is will rate of growth be stemmed by the semi lock down
We wont and cant know that

People are not taking it seriously. A woman had 3 kids with her in the supermarket yesterday. Gangs of teenagers everywhere. Our health services are going to get smashed.

It's logical considering they're the ones who have contact with sick people. It's been the same trend elsewhere.

You're talking about workers from right across the health care sector including GP's and carers. They're not going around gowned up day in day out.

Or even further back given the time to organise a test : we may be looking at 7-10 days ago.

Very big jump. More testing so would expect that.
Also we're 12 days away from the cancelled Italy game.
