Surely we have good chance of very little growth in daily figures/increases?

Is it not reasonable to think we never get above 100 new cases per day right up until March 31?

I honestly think that is wishful thinking!

Based on what they have seen elsewhere and with higher levels of testing they expect it to rise rapidly. Doctor in this audio link talks about doubling every 4-7 days. Well worth a listen - 13m.

    Ok...

I am just thinking about many people not actually deciding to get tested..?

They need big numbers of people to test, for the infection rate to keep rising...

How would anyone know that? Personally I find it hard to believe Ireland will ever have tens of thousands of cases, I think restrictions were put in early enough. But clearly Irish government believe there is a significant epidemic in the country incoming

Apologies. I got my calculation wrong. I am tired and I’m just a bit overwhelmed at the moment. I don’t really know what to think. I will try and have a brighter outlook tomorrow.

Sleep and rest is vitality important! There was a link back in the first thread in February explaining how healthy cells combat infected cells when we sleep. I’ll try and find it.

So is removing ourselves from this thread, the news and all forms of social media. I know that’s not easy but finding some other things to concentrate your mind on wouldn’t be a bad thing.

I’d suggest Duolingo. Download the free app and start teaching yourself a new language. It’s a fun app.

    Lockdown works.

When will Leo put us in lockdown? 2 or 3 weeks time maybe

I just don't think western society could cope/would be able to deal with a Chinese style lockdown! There simply are not the security forces to impose it.

Social distancing is the thing. Not clear at all on a lockdown, such measures are definitely planned, possible not probable.

The big numbers are a very worst case scenario, without any mitigation. They said last night the number of contacts per case has fallen a lot.

Once public opinion goes that way. Leo is a populist, he'll do whatever he thinks makes him look good.

They are well behind on testing, my wife is still on a list since Saturday (Clare), still sick after 10 days with all the symptoms ( but seems to be improving slowly)

They’re prioritizing people in front line health services and people in hospitals or with confirmed contacts, but this means there are lots of community transmissions where people are being told to self isolate without being tested, which IMO is a fair compromise given the shortage of kits

But everything is still open. Schools, bars, gyms, etc.

My daughter was told to finalise accounts today as though it was months end and to assume she won’t be in from tomorrow. She works in corporate event management. Casual staff laid off. She’ll be paid 4 weeks annual leave spread over 8 weeks. She might get another couple of weeks and if still no work, redundancies after that.

    Just a thought.
A hospital is still a business. Surely there's a bill waiting for everyone after all this?

30K kits now here apparently so should be less of an issue. As Henry said there are still pinch points.

My wife and I are living in the open countryside in a detached house . Both retired. So self isolation is being practised, except for trips to the local town , twice a week currently, for essentials. Wife goes in early and uses the gels , etc made available in the food shop.
I had to go to Cork to do a small task for an elderly person at her house and outside of it. The job took 15 minutes and I did not have to contact anyone. I got fuel on the way back. Wife gave me detox wipes and told me to keep my hands washed.
When I had the job done I rang the lady’s doorbell and stood back the 2 meters but she was not in. Got fuel on the way back in a forecourt ,paid. By credit card , went to bathroom there and that was it.
THEN IT STARTED - THE WIFE LAID INTO ME. She asked me how did I dry my hands after the use of bathroom and I said ‘In one of those hot air machines’.
She then said that I touched the following surfaces , at least , that a live virus may have existed ie, the doorbell, the petrol nozzle, the hot air machine button and the credit card machine. And she said that those air machines are LETHAL.

THE PENNY THEN DROPPED and I NOW WHY I SHOULD Be FREQUENTLY WASHING MY HANDS.
We should assume that the virus is present on all surfaces that are accessible to the public
All announcements on washing the hands has not been explained in the above context . If it was explained to the public as laid above I think that people would be even more aware of the reason for frequent hand washing.
So if any boardie out there think that I have a point in my opinion they might bring it to the attention of the HSE, the media in general to get it out there

Hospitals in this country are services, in the main, not really "businesses". They're not supposed to be about making profit. The "bill" will come from everyone, as per usual.

However, it brings up a good question. Are the public hospitals doing all of the Covid-19 heavy lifting in Ireland I wonder? How much are the private (for profit) hospitals doing? Like the Beacon, Blackrock or Bon Secours?
