Trump has described himself as a "wartime" president and will invoke a federal provision that allows the government to marshal the private sector in response to coronavirus.

It's fcuking sad what's happening in Italy. Seriously. I'm a heartless cnut and this is upsetting me.

4207 new cases in the last 24 hours with 475 deaths in the last 24 hours.

That's us if people don't cop the fcuk on and engage in the whole social distancing thing.

And yet gob****es here want us to experiment with Herd Immunity.

I notice some oil companies quoting 4-5 day lead time for home heating atm.

Prices have dropped significantly, but I would hope they will go further, if people can hold off.

kersosene should drop a lot more in coming weeks...oil at 21 dollars a barrel at the moment...it was 65 just a couple of weeks ago...don't fill your tanks yet!

2,978 total deaths in Italy. Could easily surpass China (with deaths) tomorrow.

I think China's figures are a pile of ****e to be honest. I'd love to be wrong.

The way the UK are acting/dealing with this, they could be it (in a week or so).

Well gmisk. I thought you were tolerant. What an obnoxious post.

I don't mind what people believe in but it's funny how when you say a lot of your peers go to mass, you get all these horrible comments.

There is a time and a place for Trump to be discussing those things. And not calling COVID-19 the Chinese virus.
    Bit bloody late now anyway.

It orignated in China. I orignated in Ireland so by your logic it would be racist to call me Irish.

If I had a ticket booked for a holiday right now, I wouldn't continue with plans. The risk is too much. The risk of picking it up abroad, getting sick while away, coming home with a contagious infection - for me, I definitely wouldn't continue with plans. I would pull out from plans and probably more than likely lose money on whatever booked.

Any Irish people with plans last week for Cheltenham - how can they be trusted to do what's right and self isolate themselves and contain this contagious infection/disease?

I'm more mad now at Leo's speech from last night because so many people are taking this seriously and doing their bit while our government invites more and more cases of this disease in.

    fack! 8.34% mortality!

Forget the mortality rate, it won't be accurate, there will be thousands, probably tens of thousands, maybe even hundreds of thousands of cases that aren't being confirmed or reported.

Jesus, it is devastating what is happening in Italy, how on earth is it so bad there yet not so in likes of germany etc? Are figures being downplayed elsewhere?

Finally they are closing schools in the UK, but not until the end of the week.

I just want to share with you something nice. Today my landlord come to my door, ask me how I am, how is a family and just say..."about rent, don't worry. Pay half, if you can. If you can't it's still ok. After this finish, we will come back to normal price, till then just mind yourself and your family..."
With people like this, and with this spirit, we can go thru any trouble. Maybe we can share more positive thinks like this here... boost our spirit and raised optimism.

They might even be worse (not that I wish for it to happen, but they and the Netherland are looking for trouble with their strategy - although they seem to be slowly realising it isn't going to work).

It'll take another week, at least, before Italy's numbers come down.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 130 ✭✭skellig_rocks

People need to be more positive. I know the numbers are scary. But if we follow strict guidelines from the government we should be able
to control the spread of the coronavirus. Places like Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau, even Japan and South Korea are able to
control the community transmission of the virus, without complete lockdowns. It is proven COVID-19 can be controlled, with strict measures. Of course we all need to do our parts. We have time advantage compared to mainland Europe.

In solidarity with everyone who is losing their jobs, the teachers should go on the dole too. We cant afford to pay them. Makes sense, right? We are heading into the greatest economic depression.

Never heard so much crap they will be continually preparing work at home uploading work for kids also attending school 1/2 days a week getting packs ready for kids

They need another week for the lock down to start affecting the numbers.

But that is every country. What it does show is the fact that once symptoms are severe a huge amount don’t survive.
