Would 2000 not be more logical with our stats

30% increase per day (which is what it is currently running at for the last few days) brings you to c.15k by the end of the month.

I had to log on specifically to thank this post.
People should never underestimate just how vital it is for the population of a country to be reassured that their leaders can be trusted to do the right thing in a crisis.
Leo, Simon Coveny and Simon Harris, have all gone up in my estimation as a result of their actions during this crisis.
That speech was needed tonight, and was perfectly weighted for the point we are currently at on the curve.
There will be more of these needed unfortunately, as we move into different stages, and implement new measures, but I rest assured that these guys genuinely have our best interests at heart.

Couldn’t agree more. I am very impressed by the key ministers in recent days. I was very sceptical at first with the guarded nature of the HSE announcements and the lack of information from all quarters. I now feel braced for what is ahead and anxious to help if the need arises.

I’m sorry but can you get the **** out of this country? Anyone that thinks trump is doing a good job obviously has a lower iq than the man himself and most of his delusional followers.

You can't counter any of his points and lower the tone with xenophobic comments. Reported

What unilateral action has he taken? Followed the UKs sick pay provisions last week. Followed the European CDC guidelines and announced it to the country from Washington. Probably the most important announcement by any Irish government since the founding of the state.

And after tonight's theatrics nothing new, country is still operational. He's dodged all major decision every step of the way. Geography will save us from the worst of this, not Leo.

You dont like Leo, we get it. You do know he is really just a mouth piece now and all the decisions are being made behind the scenes by teams of experts in relative fields.

Leo himself wasnt ever going to save us. The collective effort of those making and those implementing the plans will.

It’s amazing that supposedly intelligent people have the audacity to make claims about Ireland to the masses in the U.K. this Doctor on ITV stated that we don’t have a Public Health Service as the reason why we are reacting differently. The ignorance of the Brits to us is jaw dropping.

Real leaders don't wait for others to set the path.

The Irish government had the benefit of seeing how the virus spread in China and South Korea and what measures were needed to tackle it. What did they do in response? For weeks they continued to allow flights from North Italy whilst knowing the virus was rampant there, imposed no isolation requirements, no temperature screening of incoming passengers (it would have picked up those that are symptomatic), no checks whatsoever at airports, no travel warnings to the public until it was far too late.

They deliberately waited for it to get bad before they took serious measures and only then because it was what every other country was doing.
The things people want to see. :D

Every other country - really? Like Britain, the U.S?

Ireland has been far more vigilant than those, and earlier, but people will even resort to lying, coz Leo? Incredible.

And do clarify what you're talking about.

I know this is a tough time for everyone and we're all worried but you seem to be very angry about it all. That will not help you mentally, try to relax as much as possible. We all have to look after one another in times like this.

No matter what Leo said tonight, he would still have been slated. I am not his biggest fan but tonight he stood up to the plate and unlike Trump and Boris he is taking it seriously. He is not calling it a hoax or a Chinese flu and he is not backtracking on his initial policy as Boris did. As someone who has a compromised immune system, I am glad Leo laid out what could happen and hopefully it won't be so bad.

One thing I do want is for the government to stop funding horse racing, those piss wallets have done a lot of damage to this country. They can fuking rot for all I care.

I would hope that we can foresee vast changes in the Airline Industry from this.

In particular, I want to see Health systems put in place as currently exist for "terrorism".

The actions of a very select few mean that ALL of us have to suffer the horrendous hassle of security checks.

I await the same with regard to health checks on both egress and ingress passengers.

Think how quickly this virus has become pandemic, compared to how long it took for the Plague to spread from Genua etc.

The economic and health implications of Covid-19 will last for a long long time.

    Thank you, airline industry.

I think its the wrong industry you are blaming here. They didn't cause this virus, another vile and disgusting one did,and not for the first time.

If you think only 25,000 in Italy have or have had this virus you are very wrong. The real number is probably in the hundreds of thousands. There could well be 15,000 cases here as we speak.

Well I can only go on facts - not people speculating on Internet forums to be fair....

What were the other 6 times that a Taoiseach addressed the nation? De Velera in response to Churchill? Jack Lynch? Charlie Haughey telling us to tighten our belts?

Enda Kenny did two that I recall.
The first one in 2011, the first year of his term as Taoiseach, when the economy was still in a mess and in a bailout situation.

And another address few years later announcing our exit from the bailout programme.

    I'm not a mlm apologist.

Her and Micheal Martin are both quiet. And rightly so. Now is not the time to have BS political point scoring rows on TV (like that tool on primetime).

The only attempt at this was the talk about a national government formed from every party. The public didn't seem to give it much support. SF said that FG were using the emergency as an excuse to stay in power.

It's hard to imagine what a chimera of a national government would look like, and how it could rationally function. The last thing we need is bickering between three people, each of whom considers themselves to be Taoiseach.

The one thing the current government needed to do was to take this seriously. I think that they may have initially been frozen in indecision, not wanting to take actions that might be unpopular. However they are now making those hard decisions, and are being candid about the position we are in.

623 dead across Europe in the last 24 hours.

Italy and Spain by far responsible for most of that (536).

Italy's number are at least showing signs of stabilising. 345 deaths today, 349 yesterday and 368 the day before. Hopefully the lockdown which came in about 10 days ago is starting to take affect and there will be some easing of the pressure on their health service, but given the lag time it may yet be another week before real progress is seen.

Spain, on the other hand, is going in the wrong direction.

Was that because it was a holiday destination ? Or just it was near it ?

I’m trying to get my head around are the large numbers mostly from densely populated areas I’m sure there’s a graph somewhere I just have to look harder

No, it wasn't a holiday destination, nor was it particularly close to one.

I seem to remember there was map showing the spread of the virus around the world, I think there was one for Italy, too, but I can't find it now and I'm too tired to look for it properly, sorry.

Our leaders are doing everything possible to keep as many people as safe as they can.

They have done so much positive-

    - recruitment in the health care section
    - mobilising the €320 per week for those who lost their jobs
    - closing schools, universities, churches, bars
    - banning large gatherings and events
    - securing more ventilators
    - setting up additional testing centres
    - requesting banks, utility providers & the Revenue to defer payments

What more do people want? We are dealing with the biggest crisis of our time.

Compared to Trump & Boris, their actions are excellent, strategic and reassuring.

It’s €203 a week afaik. €305 a week is if you get the virus.

    Who's having parties?

    What the heck

That wasn't the context of my post that your were replying to.

But there is a party on in my apartment block at the minute. Can hear the "bants".

What actions did this vigilance translate to? The US was among the first to ban flights from other countries. Thankfully for us, given our govts inaction, the Italian government basically shut down flights out of north Italy

I'd say the vast of them have seasonal flu/cold etc. I though the HSE sayingh that some 90% of tested (the ones who though they had the symptoms) were negative.
Yes hypochondria and paranoia and general fear are also in play and it's difficult to blame people either way...

It not done my folks any good!! Absolute hysteria and fear at home!!
Italy is almost 3 times as densely populated with an older age profile so I’m hoping those figures don’t come true

Are the testing centres 24/7? Think that would be good for people to just go without an appointment out of hours.
