Id assume he means 15000 cases approx.

I doubt we will have that many tests done by then.

    Good speech though

Head, neck, shoulders and torso above anything from Trump, the so called leader of the free world. Hope that the foreign press broadcast Varadker’s message of solitary with the rest of the world.

GP's charging the government €30 per phone call ,, ffs that's a disgrace talk about taking the piss

This! WTF. We are talking about everyone that can help, helping. But €30 a phone call which, and I am only guessing, will take a few minutes. There is something not right about this.

Happy to be slated, but I would have thought emergency legislation mandating doctors to do a free few calls would have been reasonable!

Mr. Blobby could have delivered that speech and the nation would have rallied behind him.

Shame, he never showed this passion before.
Feck sake if they hold an election tomorrow I'd be tempted to vote for him.

Few weeks ago he was the only person on the ballot I didn't give a preference to.

The people you meet in the City Centre don't necessarily represent all of Ireland though. Give people some credit.

Exactly, the city has been dead for the last few days

Politics on hold I'd say for months. What happens after - would suggest another election would be the best thing. We will be entering deep recession, or depression, serious stuff.

Leo did well there, fair play to him. Difficult speech to give in difficult times.

He scared the life out of my parents anyway, the mother is in bits. Hopefully everyone falls in line now.

The modeling doesn't seem to take any impact from the measures already put in place.

They've used the term flatten the curve and we're doing that but they wont be 30% per day say 3 or 4 weeks down the line if the measures being put in place are effective.

Like I said if its 15k that gives us the highest number of cases per capita in the world

    Underpromise and overdeliver maybe?

Also, per capita doesn’t matter. The virus doesn’t know the population and adjust rate of transmission. If anything, it just means places like US will be dealing with this for far longer as it takes longer to spread.

Not very often I give Leo or FG credit, but he came across really well tonight.

Practical sensible advice and very clear message to the country.

    Well done Leo.

I dont get why they think whats coming will be so bad. It seems like they are expecting what happened in Italy, but weve already closed schools and most of the population are isolating, how bad could it possibly get?

How bad could it possibly get? Is that a joke

Far from a good speech imo. The way it was pre-announced it had everyone thinking it was going to be a big important announcement.

But no, just thanks lads you're all doing a great job.

Nothing new. No info. Just back patting.

And what’s wrong with that on our national holiday?
A day that is normally a party day for all, a day that everyone around the world associates with the Irish and fun?
The people who are working hard to prepare for the coming crisis deserve every recognition.

    Excellent speech by Leo.

Subtle hints we are heading for a lockdown this week.

I'm not a fan of Fine Gael, nor of Varadkar.

However, if the man is remembered for nothing else.
The failings of government policy, the housing crisis...

    That speech just now...
Will be his defining moment as Taoseaich.
He struck a balance between empathetic and statesman like.

I'd also like to think that his Churchillian borrowing was a direct dig at BoJo and his buffoon of a father!
That confident and assured oration, that would put a nation on a war footing.
That's what many in the UK expected of Boris.

I'll be quite honest, if Corona Virus was tangible I'd nearly be out trying to petrol bomb it ;)

It is going to be a long and cloistered summer for some of us.
I'm probably going to be one of those people who are "cocooned"

I have however, far more confidence in our Government and it's willingness to listen to best advice, and to put our citizen's safety 1st.

Economic ruin certain. We'll be back into the 1950s after this. A lost decade coming up. We'll have to borrow billions and pay it back jig time. Taxes up, services cut. Recession. I doubt the foreign multinationals will stay or be able too to be honest. Pretty apocalyptic actually, there are no bright lights from this

Sweet Jesus that’s the most negative thing I’ve read since it began.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,078 ✭✭✭UrbanFret

Told it like it is. This is not the time to reassure, it's the time for the whole nation to put in an effort to slow this down. if that scares people .Good

Oh you know it's just the leader of our country addressing the nation on our national day of celebration during the biggest pandemic any of us has or ever will see.

You'd be on here moaning if he didn't say a word.

The way it was pre-announced it was almost like there was going to be an actual announcement, actual info, and like it was going to be helpful.
Imo it did nothing and was poorly written.

He was excellent. Did what he could to ease peoples fears and set the tone.

See above. I wanted actual information as it was implied when it was pre-announced. You're the one ranting on about martial law, I never said anything like that.
    Cop yourself on.

The people want info and leadership. This speech didn't deliver any of that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 811 ✭✭✭EB_2013

Pitty it's taken a crisis for him to show some leadership. He's been awful up to now.
Feck sake if they hold an election tomorrow I'd be tempted to vote for him.

You're only pissed that hes not wrapping you up in bubble wrap for safe keeping.

Cocooning? What a sugar coated term for isolation for months....my god even prisoners are not allowed to be put in solitary confinement for more than a regulated period of time... it's a human rights breach

Leo is definitely the one to lead us through this crisis.

I’m so glad that he is still our Taoiseach.

This thread is full of misinformation and causes undue stress . Some of the posts are ridiculous. We all have enough to be worrying about without this.

Very reassuring listening to Leo Varadkar....glad he mentioned the ****e that’s been put out online by idiots . I had been following this thread but I’m out now

. Had long walks and hikes these last 2 days and those have been the best hours I spent, not here on Boards.ie following the Coronavirus thread !

    Stay well everyone.
