    Extract -
    OBJECTIVE
To investigate the relationship between the ABO blood group and the COVID-19 susceptibility.
    DESIGN
The study was conducted by comparing the blood group distribution in 2,173 patients with COVID-19 confirmed by SARS-CoV-2 test from three hospitals in Wuhan and Shenzhen, China with that in normal people from the corresponding regions.
    PARTICIPANTS
A total of 1,775 patients with COVID-19, including 206 dead cases, from Wuhan Jinyintan Hospital, Wuhan, China were recruited. Another 113 and 285 patients with COVID-19 were respectively recruited from Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University, Wuhan and Shenzhen Third People's Hospital, Shenzhen, China.
    MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES
Detection of ABO blood groups, infection occurrence of SARS-CoV-2, and patient death
    RESULTS
The ABO group in 3694 normal people in Wuhan showed a distribution of 32.16%, 24.90%, 9.10% and 33.84% for A, B, AB and O, respectively, versus the distribution of 37.75%, 26.42%, 10.03% and 25.80% for A, B, AB and O, respectively, in 1775 COVID-19 patients from Wuhan Jinyintan Hospital.

The proportion of blood group A and O in COVID-19 patients were significantly higher and lower, respectively, than that in normal people (both P < 0.001).

Similar ABO distribution pattern was observed in 398 patients from another two hospitals in Wuhan and Shenzhen. Meta-analyses on the pooled data showed that blood group A had a significantly higher risk for COVID-19 (odds ratio-OR, 1.20; 95% confidence interval-CI 1.02~1.43, P = 0.02) compared with non-A blood groups, whereas blood group O had a significantly lower risk for the infectious disease (OR, 0.67; 95% CI 0.60~0.75, P < 0.001) compared with non-O blood groups. In addition, the influence of age and gender on the ABO blood group distribution in patients with COVID-19 from two Wuhan hospitals (1,888 patients) were analyzed and found that age and gender do not have much effect on the distribution.
    CONCLUSION
People with blood group A have a significantly higher risk for acquiring COVID-19 compared with non-A blood groups, whereas blood group O has a significantly lower risk for the infection compared with non-O blood groups.

Are there any estimates as to the actual number of infected people in Italy? We know there are 31k confirmed but the total is probably higher

No, there's more and its going to get a hell of a lot worse.

People moaning about how long it's going to last might want to realise that we haven't even got started yet.
The further it goes the worse disaster it will be on economy think 2008, as a soft touch compared to this crap when factories let people go it wont be single digits out of works but thousands, no virus will save those needing to repay loan's mortgages, who do you think will pay extra tax to support half unemployed population if it keeps dragging.

The EU have been a disgrace as usual, they don't care about people, only power. Look at Russia, HUGE population, closed borders in January - no deaths.

Any sign of numbers from Italy?

Edit - **** it. Not getting any better there

Yeah, but as small a crumb of comfort as it is they aren't getting worse either.

The number of deaths has stabilized a bit, but only over the last 3 days so could still go either way.

The percentage of daily new cases has dropped a bit from 18% to 11% over the last 7 days but that could be an issue with testing

Christ this really is scary stuff :( could a total lockdown be possible? I pray not. Italy’s figures are heartbreaking. I do wonder what will happen here come March 29th.. my sister’s kids are off school and her and her husband reckon there’s no way they’ll be back in 2 weeks

Given their fatality rate seems to be twice, if not three times the rates of other countries, we could probably say their genuine infections are at least double what they've announced.

Which EU country have enough excess capacity on medical equipment and staff that they can afford to donate to Italy.

The EU is not a super state each of its countries had to make their own decision on this.

It gets rid of that ridiculous "EUSSR" crap anyway.

No deaths?? do you really believe that? From the country that denied they had an issue in Chernobyl until a radiation alarm went off in Sweden?

Has the virus hit southern Italy in any major way yet?

Would imagine numbers would be a whole lot worse if it gets a hold there.

I'm sure I saw images/video of passengers being allowed to board trains in the north and return home to the south over the weekend. Madness if that is really being allowed to happen.

For the smaller businesses in that sector who don't have insurance he says he will provide cash grants of 25k per business "to help bridge through this period".

I wanted Italy to show progress, DAM!!!

One thing I see around the world is it's every country for themselves, EU??? Yea right, they abandoned everyone when the chips were down !!!

Didn't we find out this 10 years ago when we were raped by the Troika?

North Korea had the right idea all along. Let no one in or out, ever.

Them and the people in the German Big Brother house have no idea of Covid19.

Wouldn't run out if so many people didn't keep requesting tests when they clearly aren't infected.

I know of 2 people who got tested after ringing the gp, neither matched all of the symptoms but still got referred on.

    Needless strain on the system

Very hard for the doctors to make the call just by talking to someone and they're probably afraid of making the wrong decision. Easier just to get everyone tested.

Why blame Trump? Its still a dickish move to pull off given they know the NYT and WaPo are ardent opponents of his administration and they can't be bothered to differentiate between the US press and him.

Italy's death rate is high because their health system is totally swamped and people who could be saved by getting treatment aren't getting that life-saving treatment. In other words, and I'm not meaning to be harsh on Italy, but they are being left to die becuase they can't treat everyone.
