With the economy being hit, where their be any work needed for this? Contact tracing? Garda recruitment , Defence Forces?

They said they are hiring mostly in health but they will be hiring en masse. Maybe they have some other roles going as well.

Going for a jog in a built up but relatively quiet area, yay or nay?

Exercise is the best thing I can do for my immune system and I'm afraid that being immobile over the coming months will ruin it.

Get a grip of yourself. Nothing wrong with going for a run.
The vast majority of us are going to get it and wont require any medical intervention so might aswell get it over with.

Hundreds of thousands of deaths - in the context of a population of nearly 80 million people - is preferable to huddling in the dark with our economy evaporating around us, waiting for a vaccine that may never come.

I don't know if you really believe that or are just trolling, but even if it is the 'correct' decision, you will not get the public to accept it, so it's political suicide.

Let your mum make up her own mind on what she wants to do. I know you are worried but unless you have a reason to think she wouldn't survive then don't write her off just yet.

    What does your mum think?

Supervalu ballaghadereen for nearly two weeks now have,

Sanitising wipes at entry to clean your trolley handle
    Hand sanitiser at entry point
Perspex shield in front of checkout staff
    Checkout staff all wearing gloves
Marking on floor at checkout for at least the first person unpacking their goods given distance

Yes, I've been shopping there and it was comforting to see them taking it seriously.

I was also in Tesco Carrick on Shannon yesterday evening where there is no protection, no sanitiser and most staff not wearing gloves

Isn't it ironic how the current situation will work wonders for global warming?! Planes parked up all over the world for possibly months, cruise liners the same, hardly any vehicles on the road etc!!
Nature has a habit of telling us who's boss now and a while and it certainly ain't us humans! Only spectators at the end of the day...

Ive had the same thought only to be annoyed again when this is over, things will ramp right up again. Maybe its our chance to have a meaningful conversation about globalisation and cheap labour/goods. Maybe it ll be a good thing if many airlines go bust and travellers have to get a medical cert before travelling out of countries/regions.

    Some figures from overnight

China has 21 new cases and 13 new deaths

South Korea has 84 new cases and 6 new deaths.

Both up slightly in cases but look stable at those kind of figures.

The official death rate in China continues to gradually deteriorate with lower case count.

Interestingly the UK banned the export of chloroquine in Feb....stock piling incase?

'As of February 26, 2020, the UK government has added chloroquine to the list of medicines that cannot be parallel exported from the UK. Chloroquine was never on this list before. This likely happened because of the growing body of evidence of chloroquine’s effectiveness against coronavirus.'

I've read that a few times now.

I wonder are people being treated with this?

The concern in Ireland is our lack of resources. Rte should be showing reports like this to show how serious this is as a lot of people simply don’t get it. I’ve heard of people still having house get togethers for st.patricks day. People still openly coughing etc and not adhering to social distancing.

A report from an Italian doctor on sky news. He’s pleading with countries to social distance saying every day counts

But you might have it for days before showing symptoms. Think of the people you might impact in that time.

Maybe some of those will need medical intervention and/or die.

Eventually we’ll be forced to stay in anyways. It’s the only way. I’ve been out in the car once or twice and nobody is really taken it seriously. Lots of groups stopped chatting and kids out playing etc.

The Gardai employed on public order duty, are a standby unit. If they are required they are called out. Otherwise, they sit waiting.
Now, I don't think there is any need for 40/50 Gardai to be sitting around doing nothing on a Tuesday morning, just in case there is a riot situation.
These Gardai are employed in normal active policing when not tied up for public order duty.

So, why would we have a full time public order unit?

We need them to act as a deterrent to the scumbags causing havoc. I think it’s a great idea, could then reopen spike island and throw them in there.

Likely you are correct. But in the report it said 1) this is the best position for oxygenation of the blood and 2) it is not working. People are not responding to the treatment. That is what the nurse said. So perhaps the viewer was responding to that sentiment?

The places where this virus has not been contained have banned any unnecessary outdoor activity. Ireland is one of those places, and are on that trajectory. people need to be very mindful about any activity that brings them into contact with the public

Going for a run is lower risk than most things because it’s a solitary activity, the location of the run matters, joggers need to pick locations that are low density rather than aesthetics pleasing. Jog around an empty GAA pitch rather than around Stephens Green

All this is off topic for now. Although depressingly, I’m sure there will be some instances of scumbaggery looting and rioting before this plays itself out. You’ll get your fill, just not quite yet

Can go for a run on a pitch or at a time when their is very few people out. This is just over analyzing.

At the moment, yes I agree, but I was responding to a poster who seemed to think we need a full time public order unit, during normal times.
    We don't.

I am sorry to have to put it this way, as we should be able to get to a sensible approach without it only coming after its to late.....but i think the real backlash against people not adhering to social distancing/controls/changes in behavior, will come from the mass unemployed when it begins to drag on for a protracted time and thousands have barley enough to scrape by.

A return to normality will be demanded by the majority, alas i feel the majority are presently not convinced we have a unbelievably serious LIVE problem.

I presume people have seen these graphs??They could have been posted pages back sorry if so.It's not so much the graphs though, as the visual graphic with each, that explains things very well.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2020/world/corona-simulator/

The rate of increase is really the key thing, not the final number that get it.......for all those people freaking out last night about Leo's 15000 number, the key point is that we don't want 15000 having all at once.We want 15000 having it over a spread of a good few weeks, so it can be managed.I think people get very hung up on numbers, and percentages of those needing ICU beds....as long as it is not all at once, or in an extremely short space of time...that it is the really important bit.

On a side note, it is absolutely heart warming to see what people (in my area anyway) are doing to help each other out.So many small businesses are closing or drastically reducing their services, which is really hard.But....local restaurants are offering takeaway catering, pharmacies are managing their queues and prescriptions really well, and shops are introducing delivery services and early hour shopping for the elderly. So many people jumping in with offers to help the elderly get shopping in, or sort out any other issues.St.Patrick's day reverse parades for the kids, free online crafting, yoga, exercise classes, small competitions everywhere for kids drawings or indoor photos and the like. I can't say if it is a peculiarly Irish thing or not, but it is fantastic to see people pull together like this.

And for inspiration ....I am sure loads of you have seen this but sure let's stick it here anyway :-)

    Can our country handle anything?

Someone's comment on Facebook, their family member has all the signs, is on day 9 with worsening symptoms and HSE saying to contact GP, GP sending them to hospital, hospital sending them home to self-isolate and won't test them.

People don't need all this passing on the problem now.
