I would like to know more info about this if possible. When we go back to normal could this not start hitting all over again? It’s a virus similar to the flu and is here to stay so how do we stop it peaking again for example in September?

From what I understood the Chinese stopped it from breaking the contact or ‘chain’ of people it could affect.

But this could happen again in a few months time. From my understanding of listening to qualified people viruses don’t have a self life from spreading. That the only solution we have is treatment, vaccines for vulnerable. Currently the only way we can control it is how we behave

Quick question to everyone. I’m looking for guidance. My OH (A Severe asthma sufferer) works for a branch of the civil service which is objectively non-essential staff. She is working in a closed office with no windows open and minimal adherence to hand gels and usual etiquettes. I’m a recently recovered cancer survivor and our usual baby sitter is now potentially infected (going for a test ASAP) thus we are all now potentially infected as exposure period of 5 days A-symptomatic occurred. This said though my O.H is more than happy to indefinitely continue on working in this non essential position leaving me now in de facto babysitting duty of our 2 young boys under 6. Our own parents are all over 75 so zero backups available. I’m exhausted and about to breakdown with stress both emotionally and financially as my business has imploded. She has requested home remote work and was essentially rejected however other staff junior to her position have been approved on this potentially life saving option. Am I out of line suggesting she screws her head on and tells the boss to go F%&* himself and that our family come first. Can she be fired (20 plus years service) ? If so can she (under the CRAZY circumstances) be legally covered under “constructive dismissal” precedences ? Need help here big time guys as I’m formulating my argument that can either be life or death.

Guidance from DPER issued today, she would come under the self quarantine criteria I think

Simple. A combination of the ECB printing money and the state borrowing will provide the resources. Most businesses that are now closed will reopen or new ones will take their place.

Merkal is always crap in a crisis like this including when it comes to printing money. They think printing money will lead to hyper inflation like happened in Germany 100 years ago. The Germans were a major driver of austerity in Europe in the last 10 years. They'd prefer austerity to money printing any day.

I think he just tried some busy practices a few months ago and got a negative response. He's not a medical card patient so, there was no bureaucracy involved. The practices were just very busy.

My opinion. Its not that there is something fundamentally wrong with those businesses, the directors have to be seen to run them effectively. If they continue to trade as if nothing happened and with little or no sales, it can be deemed wreckless trading under Company Law (drafted for non Pandemic scenarios). Brutal as it is to lay off staff in these times, ultimately they are trying to ride out this situation and preserve the business as best they can long term.
The announcrment that the State will pick up the tab for the increased jobseekers benefit payments changes things a lot, but if there is no cash, how do the businesses pay all the staff? Ultimately, many, especially in the hospitality sector have to lay off stsff as they dont have the cash in the business to pay them.
To end, thats my opinion. I am not a business owner, accountant or director of a company.

Again, not talking about paying staff that aren't working. Merely holding their job, until things get back to normal.

I find it difficult to believe that a lot of companies are operating on such a knife edge.

Not sure if this was posted already. Sky has published some details of the people who have died from the virus in the U.K. The majority are elderly and compromised patients.

They may have to get over their century-old phobias as there'll be a far bigger problem if you've austerity and chaos.

Also, I somehow don't think the rest of the EU will stand for it this time.

Get off yer high horse you clown. What I said was true and I couldn't care less whether you believe it.

You couldn't care less if you spout away and frighten people with facts like everyone I know got the flu after getting the vaccine 😱. In the current ****storm that we are in I am just telling you that vaccines work. I give them every year and they do work and hopefully we will get one for Covid 19. Please cop on.

What does "holding their jobs" mean in practice?

It means you have a job to come back to when things get back to normal. But, sorry, we can't pay you while we close temporally. Even if it's only the word of the employer.

I think a lot of people would be, at least, happier with that option, than a simple get lost, you're finished.

A quick question for you all. A friend of mine was out jogging earlier and a neighbour of his was out walking his dog. He crossed the road and talks to mate. He mentions he is supposed to be in self isolation as his mother is in hospital with Covid-19. The guy is coughing too so mate says he has to go. My mate is wondering if he should call the guards? He thinks if he does this guy might retaliate.

One thing that I'm sure the HSE has allowed for too is the drop in critical/primary care needs for other things such as road traffic accidents, sporting injuries, older people falling and breaking bones and kids picking up illnesses in schools and creches. All those things are going to fall due to people being at home more etc. Which frees up beds and staff to deal with the virus.
It's another element the Italians didn't have time or failed to prepare for so it's another factor that will help with the situation and another reason for us all to try stay home and stay somewhat sedentary!

Sorry to hear this. Can she work from home?

If not, she should stay home anyway. You're high risk. I don't think anyone is going to get fired for that, we're not the USA. Plus she's in the civil service!
This is my thinking , I believe continued service is reckless , irresponsible and fatal for both of us never mind the outcome for our kids. Amazingly how some parts of the civil service is closed or working from home and others are deemed less worthy and turfed into a potentially germ ridden closed pit.

In the movie castaway tom hanks uses a volleyball he names Wilson as an imaginary friend while stranded on an island. He does this to try to keep himself sane from the isolation.

Unbelievable the flu virus must be very partial to everyone you know because I work in a private hospital employing 250 people and we are offered the flu vaccine every year and 75% take it without fail. Not one person in our place got the flu this year or last year or the year before. Two people got it in 2017 and they didn't have the vaccine. Why am I replying to to this kind of braindead posting? I must be running a temperature.
The flu vaccine isn't effective for everyone.

WHO: Warning signals from the volatile world of influenza viruses
Reduced vaccine protection against seasonal influenza

Experts convened by WHO decide on the composition of seasonal influenza vaccines for the northern hemisphere in February of each year. Doing so gives manufacturers sufficient time to have doses of vaccines ready before the start of the flu season, usually in October or November.

Since February 2014, the genetic make-up and antigenic properties of the H3N2 virus, the predominant seasonal virus circulating in North America and Europe, changed significantly. This change allowed most of the viruses circulating in the flu season to elude protection provided by the vaccine which was designed for an older virus with distinctly different characteristics.

As a result, interim estimates of the effectiveness of the current seasonal vaccine in reducing the risk of medical visits associated with influenza infection – in all age groups – was only 23% in the US. This is lower protection than usual but is not unexpected for seasons when there is a significant rapid change in the properties of circulating viruses. Seasons where there is a significant reduction in seasonal vaccine protection due to the rapid and unpredictable evolution of influenza A viruses are relatively rare with only four seasons during the past 25 years.

Since the 2004–2005 influenza season, US researchers have produced annual estimates of vaccine effectiveness. Estimated vaccine effectiveness in the US has ranged from 10% to 60%, with effectiveness in most years being 40-60%. This calls for better vaccines.

And why do you assume that the employers of the laid off employees have not said this?

Whether they did or not, the only legally correct method is lay off anyway. You can't hold employees in some sort of unpaid limbo for months.

    “Generally what always happens”?

Have we emerged from a global pandemic a few times where businesses reopened?

This is uncharted territory for businesses in this country

Perhaps someone on Twitter has an anti clamper agenda and is just using this angle to further it? If thats the case, under the current circumstances, its quite lame!

    Claire Byrne on +1.

My God Sarah McInerney, journalist, is another beautiful, talented Irish lady. I think I nearly find Sarah a little more attractive than Claire.

I know this is the Covid 19 thread but I wanted to share positive feelings!
