Why aren't China trying to get 'herd immunity' across their one billion whatever population I wonder?!

Because they have experience with these viruses

Still only 6 in ICU, which is good news.

The only way to fix the economy and the markets is that we win against the virus. There will be social upheaval and perhaps we can see more clearly what needs to fixed. Stronger health system, greener economy and a better security net.

Where will we get the money to cover this?

I don’t know how people are feeling in general but I'm starting to crack up.

Edit: I mean if there was some end in sight you’d say something but it’s as if there’s no ****ing end.

They seem to be trying to gradually introduce restrictions rather than go from normal life to total lockdown and cause widespread panic.

We'll probably have flights grounded next and other non-essential business closed like restaurants, cafes and cinemas.

The Taoiseach did say he doesn't see any need for 'quarantine' : he anticipates people will be allowed leave their houses no matter what

Dr Holohan saying the exact same thing now

Just to give some context. We have about 270 ICU beds, but many more ventilators than that. Every theatre has ventilators and there are many theatres around the country. The private sector has a large number also as they do lots of cardiac and major surgery in some institutions and they will all be available to us.

Staffing them won't be easy but we are a little better off than 250.

Also ordering more as commenced also.

If operating theatres are turned into makeshift beds. That will cause a knock on increase in non-covid deaths. That’s the reality of health services being stretched. Everyone receives less care.

Yeah we arent as competent as China. We want a nice spread for all. We dont under any circumstance want to stop the spread.

Seriously what are you basing this on?

Not as competent as China? Why do some people always feel the need to run ireland down.

So answer my question then. Whats the endgame Chicken Licken

It is hardly fair to mock people who are on the more nervous side about this thing, given how 2 months ago most of us were fairly blasè and could not have foreseen things being the way they are now or could be as they are in Italy. While personally I would tend to cleave more towards the attitude you generally display, it is also allowed to leave some bit if room for the dreadful possibility that things might be ...FUBAR.

Experience is not going to eliminate it. Its not on just the chinese now. It can come from anywhere.

They said 33% of the first 150 or so cases were in 25-44 age range. Holy crap!!

Some perspective, 2% of Italy population currently have been diagnosed positive

Sorry what age definition did he give for 33% of the first 150 cases? Was it aged 24 to 44?

    Ignore ans above

Was wondering about Mullingar also, considered to be the east?
Did they announce that cluster of 16 to be anywhere specific?
Will be interesting to see the county numbers eventually.

41 in the east. Dublin is riddled, by the looks of it.

41 out of 1m people is not riddled. It is a cluster. But it will rise hugely, I grant you.

Just to give people a bit of reason for optimism...

I work with some guys in China. I was speaking with one of them today and they are starting to get back to “normal”, things are much more upbeat there in the last week or so. He had been under full lockdown since late January. Very strict. Only allowed out for grocery shopping a couple of times a week. Now they are allowed leave their homes and many are starting to go back to their old routines.

Full lockdown was enforced in China. Contrast that to what`s happening in Italy and Spain. We are going to be as bad if not worse than those 2 countries.

Per capita doesn’t necessarily matter tho. It might benefit us in a weird way in that we have a small population so it’ll be “over” for us sooner. Population density helps the speed of spread alright, but comparing infections per capita doesn’t give any important indicator. The virus doesn’t know the population, it just spreads.

Every country in the world has ordered them. We don't have anyone making them in this country from what I can tell. How will we get them? Germany have ordered 10000, UK put the call out yesterday for companies to give them as many as they can possibly make for whatever price. How are we going to get the amount we need I wonder? Worrying.

We make ventilators in galway. 40% of world market apparently. Used to be Nellcor Puritan Bennet when I was there over 20 years ago. Still there but don’t know their name now. Oddly enough, Italy was our main purchaser for home use years ago.

If Leo & company project 15,000 cases by end of March, why not lockdown the country now? At least try to stymie growth instead of emulating the Italian model.

Because there is no point. The bulk of the 15000 will be from single cases brought into the home, infecting everyone in the home. Social isolation will be just as effective if it's done properly.
