nice to see dept of welfare is stuck in 1970 ffs

how long will it take to process 140000 hand written forms

if unions were obliging previously this should be doable online

Most applications are doable online: https://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social_welfare/irish_social_welfare_system/claiming_a_social_welfare_payment/applying_for_social_welfare_payments_and_services_online.html

I feel so sorry for all the clowns who were looking forward to having a histrionic breakdown once today's numbers were announced by the HSE.

They have to wait an entire 2 hours now before they can exaggerate how dreadful the increase is and blame the government on everything...oh yeah and blame the Brits, Pub Owners, Teenagers, Donald Trump, Italy, Spain and China and racing fans ..., how awful. Honorable mention to Dub bashers, it is only a matter of time really ( I actually started Cork bashing last night, I didn't want to leave them out tbh)

I agree that FG are doing well here at.

But what's this bs about SF? Wtf would you expect them to do or say? Are they any less visible than FF, Greens, SocDems, Labour, Militant Tendency/Trotskyite International, &c? I mean the middle of an international and national crisis but sure don't let the opportunity to have a go at SF pass. FFS.

Not a fan of Sinn Fein but totally agree Cilldara. Time for doing what needs to be done, not political sniping.

It's certainly worth looking at what the Germans are doing right, their toll is kept very low so far, lives being saved. What are the differences in treatment?

A good health service with sh** loads of ventilators/respirators.
They might be keeping hundreds on life support?

Why do you think a British minister was on TV yesterday begging British industry to start manufacturing them ?

Although it shows how fooked up the British government is that they are supposedly asking car manufacturers and JCB to make them.

If these numbnuts were in charge during the war they would have had Hovis making tanks and Austin making parachutes.

BTW we are in serious trouble with our measily numbers.

I am not allowed discuss …

Regarding the British response, isn't it blatantly obvious that they are now starting their backtrack? Why keep rowing about it?

Because the results their demented efforts to spread the virus will not be seen for about 10 to 14 days.

I don't give a flying f*ck what they do on their own island.

But they are wrecking all our efforts to contain the virus by their lack of action in Northern Ireland.

It's not the first time the Brits have screwed us over you know !

I really think the communication and information handling strategy is not working. People want as much information as possible, and if it's not available from the official sources then they will seek it out elsewhere- some correct, a lot incorrect. That's how people behave, expecting otherwise is just denying reality, so officials have to take a lot of the blame for this sharing of misinformation.

Also this holding back of information until evening time, and then delaying even further so it's unpredictable, is increasing anxiety unnecessarily. None of this seems to be in line with WHO recommendations on how to keep people on side with open, honest and regular communication.

A united Ireland is exactly what we need at the moment.

Certainly an Ireland united in thought, anyway. If not, and Northern Ireland wants to follow the rest of the UK in a lax approach to this, then the only way we can stop feeling the spillover from that is to at least attempt to control the flow of traffic across the border. It wouldn't be easy and mightn't even be workable, but these are extraordinary times.

I thought they have an online application option now, no?
Sure lots of people wouldn't even have printers, I know we don’t, it recently broke and we haven’t replaced it.
Lots of TDs offices are printing them out for constituents if that's any help?

Anyone else got a sneaking suspicion that there is a lot they aren't telling us about this virus? How are young health professionals dying from it? Over exposure? I don't get it, I thought if you get it you are then immune to it. Please forgive my ignorance if this has already been discussed.

We can see that health professionals are a group of people who get this early (from infected sick people turning up in hospitals for help).

Staff levels drop due to illness.

Personal protective equipment is needed and there may not be enough supplies.

I reckon for health professionals it could be a mixed bag:
    - maybe they are infected and it's early days in an infection for them
    - being overworked would be another cause - exhaustion, dehydration, hunger

Depending on how high they are possible but unlikely.

A full lockdown even if called would be impossible for the government to enforce
We simply don't have the manpower.
Unlike our European counterparts who have large army's and police forces.
Only thing left is pubic transportation and stoping work except for front line staff

You can apply for Jobseekers online using your MyGov account, the forms are for people who haven't opened an account.
If you are lucky your employer can pay you the €203 directly and eliminate the need for applying in any format. Your employer can claim it back when normality resumes.

I agree it's a really terrible strategy by the UK but I would say the NI number might stay fairly low due to lack of testing unless pretty already ill

Randox are based in Antrim they are exporting Covid test kit and reagents to China . 4 hour testing afaik ... Surely this world leader should be active in NI and RoI. Media very shy on testing .. also v shy on Ventilators and Masks....

Spain have brought in legislation on masks and UK have asked for factories to produce ventilators.

We have a factory (Galway?) for ventillators but that would be an export business ... do they supply HSE?? .. have they been ordered to assist ... are they on 24x7 shifts.. can kit be sent to Croke-Park and the University Campus Treatment x Holding centers / preMortuary centres..

Remember the chit chat about the use of ibuprofen (various brand names like Nurofen etc) the French warned against its use, the HSE posted today
The HSE is today, (Monday 16th March 2020), advising anyone with Covid-19 to continue to take any medication you were already taking, unless you are told not to by a healthcare professional. This includes anti-inflammatories (NSAID) such as ibuprofen, naproxen or diclofenac.

In response to false information about anti-inflammatory medication and Covid-19 circulating in media and on social media over the last 24 hours, Dr Colm Henry, Chief Clinical Officer of the HSE advises, “Only take one anti-inflammatory medication at a time. It is okay to take paracetamol and an anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen at the same time.

“There is no evidence to stop any medication at this time. There is no need to order more medicines than you need, as this will affect the supply of medicines to others, and there is no disruption to the supply of medicines. If you have respiratory symptoms, do not attend your pharmacy in person. Phone your pharmacist if you need to order a prescription. Ask a family member to collect any medicines you need.

This evening in the guardian we read
Experts have criticised NHS advice that people self-isolating with Covid-19 should take ibuprofen, saying there is plausible evidence this could aggravate the condition.

The comments came after French authorities warned against taking widely used over the counter anti-inflammatory drugs. The country’s health minister, Olivier Véran, a qualified doctor and neurologist, tweeted on Saturday: “The taking of anti-inflammatories [ibuprofen, cortisone … ] could be a factor in aggravating the infection. In case of fever, take paracetamol. If you are already taking anti-inflammatory drugs, ask your doctor’s advice.”

NHS guidance states that people managing Covid-19 symptoms at home should take paracetamol or ibuprofen.

“I would advise against that,” said Prof Ian Jones, a virologist at the University of Reading. “There’s good scientific evidence for ibuprofen aggravating the condition or prolonging it. That recommendation needs to be updated.”

Is it any wonder people are uncertain as to how to proceed? Both cannot be right in the general sense.

Not really. It involves very important private personal information, EG PPS, bank accounts, mother's maiden name &c. Google, Facebook, Amazon and Microsoft combined would struggle to get a secure and bug free system up and running in less than one working day. Give them a chance ffs.

Public services card starting to look like it was a good idea.

But the people weren't having any of it because of data.

    Like that matters anymore.
