So we’ve had our first death, a female with a underlying condition, in the east of the country. RIP.
    Hope there’s not many more.

For all our holiday worries and grumbles, this is truly tragic and heartbreaking for one family. It should be a stark reminder of how small our worries really are. Stay well everyone.

I'm due to pay the balance of our holiday to Majorca tomorrow, €2500. I would be immunocomprimised but not sure what's best. Deposit of 600 has been paid.
I contacted them (TUIholidays) today to see if there is anything that can be done, either delay payment or hold the deposit.
I got a generic terms and conditions reply & no resonable offer to accomodate anything else..
They will defer the final payment but would require 50% be paid tomorrow & the balance in 2 weeks. Hardly much good to me. The only other option would be to amend the holiday & go somewhere else later in the year. they'll charge 200 for that plus the cost of the new holiday. Problem is all their holidays are more expensive now then when we booked so likely cost a lot more.

For now my plan is to cancel the holiday, take the 600 deposit hit & if things look better in the summer then we'll book a last minute holiday & hopefully it will work out ok.

Prices are only going to go down for holidays over the next month. I wouldn't risk €2500 to save the €600.

Not due to fly to Seville until 1st week of May with Ryanair. Can I assume its tough nuggies in terms of a refund?

Puts all the “well if I can’t get a refund I’m going anyway” into perspective anyway.

They're only refunding Italy as it stands... And making a huge mess of mine!!

Need a bit of advice, we have a child with poor immune system and we are due our first family holiday end of June. Balance of holiday to be paid middle of next month .. €800 deposit paid.
This holiday took a lot of planning but don’t want to pay and lose all money if we can’t travel.
We asked travel agent and deposit is definitely gone if we don’t pay remainder and VHI won’t cover if the country isn’t on DFA do not travel site.
GP and specialist said that both would give us letters stating they would recommend our child not to travel but again VHI won’t cover this as his condition would have been pre-existing and they only cover if new medical issues caused a cancellation.
We honestly can’t see this situation improving so much to allow us to travel in June .

I honestly wouldn’t take a child with an underlying illness into an unsafe area.
You have my sympathies but it’s far too risky imo.
€800 is a lot to lose but your child’s safety and health are worth far more than that.
    Don’t risk it.

The way things are we definitely won’t be traveling but probably hoping to much that the situation will have improved enough to travel by June.
Just glad we didn’t pay full amount when booking .. €800 euro is a lot of money to us and the holidays have been saved for the last 3 years .. just our luck. Probably best keeping money and hopefully get going somewhere nearer end of summer.

I'm due to fly on Thursday to Tenerife...

Re-up this. Tomorrow is the day. 20 cases now on the island. 6 of them were of that original hotel that was in quarantine. A few people earlier the week said to go for it, still that same feeling?

I'm really sorry to say that it's only going to get worse. It's terrible but I think you should make your peace with the fact that it's not going to happen. I myself have a salou holiday booked for April that we had to take the hit on.

The health of you and your family is worth more than any holiday.

It's an official global pandemic where people are being told not to socialise and to refrain from any unnecessary gathering because the result of not following those instructions is people are DYING.

    Why are people not listening?

I was 60 last Monday :). In January I treated myself to flights, accommodation and tickets to the Indy 500 motor race in Indianapolis. The other half was reluctantly coming with me . Unless things improve I doubt I’ll be going, I’m high risk. I reckon it might be called off anyway. Sure it’s only a motor race. Life is more important.

I sympathise with your situation having the trip booked. I would definitely not be going if it was me though. This has now gone well beyond the point of "go for it". Apart from personal risks of getting the virus or being stuck there, I think you need to consider how you would feel in the very realistic scenario you end up bringing the virus back here, you infect a friend or family member, and they die because you didn't want to cancel your trip to Tenerife.

The Virus is already here in Ireland.

It is possible to catch the virus on public transport here.

Pubs and restaurants are all still fully open, you could be served by someone who has the cv19 virus but not showing any symptoms.

Or you could touch a surface which an infected person has touched before you in your workplace as most of us are occupying the same air conditioned office for 7 or 8 hours everyday 5 days a week.

The only true way to avoid catching and transmitting the virus is to practice social distancing, work remotely, avoid all crowds and public gatherings, regular and thorough hand washing and sanitizing.

Yeah, seen that. Was wondering does that guarantee a refund from your airline. Was due to travel to Madrid next week

Not yet - it's don't do non essential travel, normally needs to be the next level- do not travel for insurance and airline cancellations to kick in.

Think the wording is "All but essential travel" which makes the difference.
I don't think there will be any refunds yet unfortunately.

    Hope this thing is contained.

Thanks for that. Doubt it's worth the risk going.

All absolutely true, I fully agree. However it remains a bad idea for people to be getting onto flights abroad to areas of known high risk as the previous poster intends to do. We do not know the true level of community transmission in Ireland right now (clearly there are far more cases than the number that have been tested and confirmed), but it's still limited enough today that there have only been a few dozen cases confirmed and one fatality. Those numbers are going to go up regardless of any measures taken, but I think most people are aware at this stage that we need to be slowing the rate of growth and "flattening the curve" in order to do what we can to reduce the inevitable strain on the healthcare system. Non-essential flights to high-risk areas certainly won't help.

Does that mean Leo has to stay in the USA?

I actually think the virus will be worse in the USA than it has been in China .
The Chinese were very pro-active in containment and testing .
The USA is all over the place with it .

Thank Christ, I met a US guy this week and he admitted he thought the US is riddled with the virus.Still thought it was all over-hyped.
