in the same boat, trip to NYC booked for the end of march. cant see a travel ban being applied. Most cases seem to be outside the city though.

Well then could you stop scaremongering and giving unsubstantiated advice without at least trying to back it up with some logic or statistics?

My logic would be that I wouldn't want to take the chance of being quarantined or being abroad at this time. It's purely my opinion and my advise.

I don't want to scaremonger. I have no idea what's happening at the moment but the uncertainty of it would be enough to postpone any holiday I had to a popular tourist destination.

    That's just me.

I'm due to fly on Thursday to Tenerife. Chances of me catching something there are probably less than the chances of catching it walking around the city but one worry is about a quarantine in the hotel. Couldn't afford to turn my trip into a 3 week lockdown.

I would still go, your chances of it being picked up are still high if you travel on a packed bus or train here in Ireland.

What I would do is not stay at a hotel, especially where you have communal dining areas with people touching the same items over and over.

I'd book a self catering bungalow where you can reduce the contact with large numbers of people.

You're unlikely to catch a virus at the beach so enjoy some sun!

Has anybody had any experience with Airbnb and Coronavirus cancellations yet?

The whole of Italy is now on lockdown.

Hopefully now I can argue with VHI Multitrip that going to Rome would be folly - nothing is open anyway!

Spoke to them the other day, they will only pay out once an area is listed on the DFA website as 'do not travel'

    It hasn't been updated yet...

Yes, but I'm hoping that a) DFA will change position tomorrow following this announcement by Conti tonight b) there's an argument that my holiday is severely curtailed by an order that closes all tourist attractions, cinemas, theatres, etc.

Airports and public transport is still open which is pure madness.

Like I say, they told me last week, even if your trip is curtailed because of closed attractions if the DFA dont have it marked as 'do not travel' then you could in.theory still travel so they won't pay out.

Anyway hopefully the DFA will update the site in the morning- mad you can still book a seat on the 0625 to Milan though.

Does insurance cover 'Avoid non-essential travel' or only 'Do not travel' advice?

Here's the VHI Coronavirus info: I think it does.

depends on your policy and insurer, they all have their own terms and conditions

    MultiTrip

We will not pay for claims arising directly or indirectly from:
    .
    .
    .
    19. Your travel to a country or specific area or event to which the Travel Advice Unit of the Department of Foreign Affairs*or the World Health Organisation (WHO) or similar body has advised against all or all but essential travel.

This would seem to indicate that they will cover in terms of not travelling for a non-essential advisory.

reads to me that they wont cover if youve travelled after an advisory of non essential travel

It's one thing to say they won't pay if you travel to the area. It's not possible to extrapolate from there that they will cover you if you don't travel. This is an insurance company.

Yeah they say they won't cover if you do travel when DFA advisory is in place.

I wonder if the corollary is true, that they will cover us for not travelling once that DFA advisory is in place.

You'd have to ask them. I'm sure this issue is exercising the minds of actuaries as we speak.

VHI say they will cover when the DFA advise 'not to travel' AS LONG as you bought the policy before they advised 'non essential travel only'

If in doubt ring and take a note of the day and time you called as calls are recorded should you need to claim and there is confusion.

I spoke to VHI Multitrip just now.

They ARE covering claims for Italy for trips booked already up to 3rd April.

Just sit tight, it's only a matter of time until your flight is cancelled. The DFA have changed the warning level for Italy to "Do not travel", the same level as Afghanistan and Syria so all flights to Italy will have to be cancelled.

    Not necessarily.

The DFA is a recommendation only, airlines are still selling seats, hey there's a Ryanair flight to Milan tonight. In saying that people booking on them must drop soon (no shows have still paid their money).

Countries that are now safer to travel to than Italy according to the DFA: North Korea, El Salvador and Haiti lol

Suspect forward bookings are flat, the no shows happening at the moment are still revenue to the airline.

Assume Aer Lingus etc will follow suit pretty quickly.
