The UK has their first confirmed cases on the 31st of January. It was the 28th of February by the time they had 21 cases. Within 10 days , 21 cases has gone to over 200 with 5 deaths.
We had our first confirmed case on the 1st of March I think. We have 21 cases a week later. I don’t think we have any cause to think we may get off lightly.

Well per capita 21 in a week is a lot more in that timeframe for Ireland than the UK

Whatever about containing, isolating and tracing the cases we have and know about, there's still flights landing that could have someone with the virus unbeknownst to themselves

    Holiday to Israel is off!

Glad I went there back in the day, it was something else, but I was younger then and took it all in my stride.

I think I'd be a bit more questioning of the place right now though. Still, no reason to visit a place twice unless you have family or a house there is there?

I just had a check through the Boards threads on the Swine Flu pandemic back in 2009. The thread was discussing that 25% of the population could get the illness. in the end 1000 people in Ireland caught it. So i'm thinking this is more panic than what the reality actually will be.

    Good man. Someone's awake.

Is it just my perception being off or are some people on here really giving the impression they are actually willing the number of new cases to keep increasing to try and prove a point? It certainly seems that way.

Look, if I've misunderstood something I apologise.
The links you posted from the hse's website shows that the list of problem countries the HSE use is completely inadequate.

If you're saying the info the HSE has published is rubbish and that they're actually using much better criteria then tell me what it is and how you know it. Please

As I mentioned last night for up-to-date areas considered high risk areas or areas with sustained community transmission can be found via the WHO SitReps.

The ECDC has deferred to the WHO on this topic also because they are better placed to track this information :)

As it currently stands the HSE's list of affected areas is woefully outdated but it's also not the list the health service is taking direction from.

Also, I want to apologise for being narky in my previous post. I'm sincerely sorry. It's been quite a long day!

I think sensible people see what is happening to the East of us who had zero, then one, then three, then hundreds.

I suppose we might think St Patrick will keep the virus away just like he did with the snakes. We are different and all that.

But hopefully we will buck the trend. Ever hopeful me.

I'm hoping a combination of bad weather, social distancing, spread out population, good hygiene and even the way Irish people greet each other with a hello instead of a kiss will keep the numbers low.

I can't believe how it's developed in Italy

Could this virus mutate into something even more dangerous, and if so would people who had the original virus be immune to the mutation?
Sorry if this has been asked already.

Does anyone know if any of the charities have organisedto drop off food supplies to elderly people who don't want to venture out, can't use online shopping or have no one to support them?

I'd happily do a number of drop offs at the weekend if it helped anyone elderly and living alone.

The point of cancelling the parades is to slow it down. Containment is out the window at this point no matter how much the hse continue to say that we are in that phase. It's about slowing it down so the hospitals arnt over run with people who are critically ill.

Something I didn’t understand from that press conference was, if testing so strict as we’ve seen, and we get low daily figures, wouldn’t their “phase 2” plan take a longer time to initiate if we only have maybe 50 ish people (Hypothetically) by Saturday since the numbers are still low? -Thus letting the virus potentially spread for longer

I would like to know also, when they go into the next phase, does that mean testing criteria will be more fluid/less strict. (e.g. anyone with symptoms)

From the UK press conference I understood that at a later stage, as the number of confirmed cases really escalates, people reporting symptoms will be told to self isolate at home. The assumption will be then that they probably have the virus, without testing. I suppose this is to stop the test process being overwhelmed. Probably something similar will apply here. We are some time away from that yet but I imagine they will have to keep to fairly tight criteria in the meantime.

Was Trump not downplaying the virus thing and saying that he'd rather that cruise ship didn't dock so it wouldn't upset the figures?

Is it not kind of the same type of situation as the guy in Italy?
