That's heartbreaking. My son has epilepsy. I hadn't realised that made him an at risk category. Frightening.

This is the first time I've seen Epilepsy being mentioned and it could just be mentioned as it was a condition she was dealing with anyway.
I have epilepsy myself and would not class myself as at risk.
I'm lucky I know my triggers and deal accordingly I would not let this news change how i deal with things.

Are there any clear statistics on number of tests carried out per country? Just heard a “fact” that Italy was way and ahead in the number of people tested in the early stage.
Germany - does not publish the number of tests
    UK does - nearly 25000

    Italy does - nearly 50000

France - I can not find the number on the Gov website however I have seen this chart from Liberation

Well firstly, you're only looking at a day MAX if this is retrospective (and it won't be)

Illness Benefit pays for 6 days so you would only get 50.83 for the day.

Secondly, it hasn't been signed into law yet so there's still 'currently' no entitlement as it does not (yet) pay for the first 6 days of an illness.

Ingrid Miley on there now. It will be retrospective to today.

Also made the point that public sector workers will get full salary if out.

I'm not really understanding it though. Food hasn't become scarce and young people aren't getting really sick/dying in big numbers. The food supply will continue.

Sorry if already asked / answered but when will today’s figures be released?

In Fridays conference , they said they would release updated before 6, but nothing up yet: https://www.gov.ie/en/news/7e0924-latest-updates-on-covid-19-coronavirus/

That is absolutely heartbreaking to read. I'm sure there are many families around the globe in a similar situation.
Approaching 4000 people dead worldwide this evening, buried without ceremony and with many of their family following them shortly afterwards.

This assumes that stressed out parents of sick children have time and money to be going around buying a pile of stuff.

I AM a parent of an at risk child. And I have been prepping thankfully. Others parents I have spoken to have as well.

Very very glad I listened to the people on boards warning us what was coming.
Feeling very sorry that those parents on fb didn't have someone to warn them to prep. Or that our government didn't shut down flights weeks ago so they wouldn't have to. Schools should shut now.

If you wake up with symptoms of corona virus or you get a call from the doh telling you you've been in contact with a person with Covid-19 and you need to immediately self isolate for two weeks.. what will you do, head to tesco first?

He expects thing to get very worse.
Also if someone does get infected it would be easier to self isolate with a stock pile of food..

I have been saying weeks about the ancillary effects of the virus when people were saying 'just the flu' etc.

The chaos in Italy, the markets, the implications for health systems, the whole disruption - everything some here worried about and were often belittled as "scaremongerers" is coming to pass.

And it hasn't even started in this country yet.

People just need to remain calm and we'll get through it but there is no denying a tough few weeks ahead.

The team of the world's leading Epidemiologists and Virologists who went to China would be very hard to fool... perhaps the conspiracy forum would be a better place for your posts.

Have you ever looked at how big China is geographically? If they were there for a whole year, the Chinese could still arrange for them to only see what they wanted them to.

I was and others were accused of scaremongering.
Not believing the HSE false narrative we were accused of be conspiracy nuts.

    Here we go.

If the HSE were following a false narrative prior to today, what's to say that they're still not following a false narrative in their change of tact?

I'd love to see what modelling is coming up with the stats of potentially 50%-60% are going to contract the virus when we aren't seeing that in other countries.

To me it feels that the government is preparing us for some of the measures they're going to take by painting a grimmer picture than the reality to justify it. They tease the 1.9m at the weekend, announce parade cancellations and then double down with a 50-60% figure. (What changed since the 1.9m figure?)

A bit like when police press conference release incorrect information purposefully to see how the public respond in unsolved cases.

The parade cancellation won't do much to contain the virus. Tourists don't come to ireland this time of year with the parade being their primary reason, they come for the Irish experience. Irish people and tourists will still flock to bars. Its a national holiday so unless the weather is bad, people will be off work and will socialise, be outdoors etc.

If you have to self quarantine for 2 weeks it’s a good idea to have 2 weeks worth of food in the house to sustain yourself. Whether young people are dying or not is neither here nor there as they can still transmit it to someone who has a higher risk of dying, hence the need for self quarantine no matter what age you are.

No need to stockpile on food, there is enough evidence that food supply chain keeps functioning. Cleaning products on the other hand...

Bruce Aylward spoke about this "tip of the iceberg" fallacy during a live press conference. He said the Chinese carried out extensive testing to try to find out if there were a lot of unreported cases, unfortunately that was not the case, they found no significant unreported cases.

Maybe Italy/europe is different but it's unlikely.
We are following the same exponential growth without takeing any action to try and reduce the effective R0 to below 1 (contained).

We had all the warning needed from China and Iran and even Italy, and we failed to use that time to try and contain the spread.

More drastic proactive measures will be needed now and unfortunately there will be unnecessary deaths on authorities hands.

    First it was;
"We have a very low chance of the virus spreading here" then
"It will only be a few cases"
"It will be mild, just like a flu"
"The chances of catching it are still low"
"Local authorities should not act unilaterally"
    To
    "Potentially 1.9mil infected"
"It will mostly affect the old and compromised"

As if they are not as important FFS.

When you say agressive measures what do you mean by that? Lockdown similar to China and Italy?

I don't know if that will be happening here. Not yet anyways. With the new sick pay regulations it looks as if the government will be letting this virus pass through Irish society.

Thanks, just thinking that “% of people tested” could be an indicator of any massaging of figures by keeping tests low

Maybe I’ll just break out the tinfoil hat instead
