No it absolutely does not. You continue to assume every infected person in the world has been tested and found. There are likely many many people with mild symptoms who recover without ever being tested.

    Yeah.

The reason Germany has such a high infection rate and a rock bottom death rate is because they are being incredibly thorough testing people. As such, they are catching people who are infected but barely showing symptoms.

Where as some places, like Italy, seem to be the opposite; they are only testing people with severe symptoms. Which makes the percentage look way, way worse.

So the government is taking some reasonable steps here. I wonder whether the crowd saying Leo is weak, is a muppet, shouldn't be let back into the country etc, will be in to withdraw their posts before or after armageddon?

Your stat is based on closed cases that are known about. Its more than likely that there many unknown cases too. The scale of the testing in South Korea helps in this regard.

    His stat was also wrong.

    It's 5.79%.

The Government is to introduce emergency legislation in the Dáil to amend the rules on sick pay, which will see Illness Benefit rise from €203 per week to €305.

It will be available from the first day of illness rather than after six days as at present, and conditionality will be waived to allow the self employed to receive it.

There will be no minimum number of PRSI contributions, but medical certification will be required.

The Taoiseach said the objective was to ensure that workers would not be afraid to self-isolate on financial grounds.

Will all parties vote for this? When will the Dail sit?

I'm anticipating we are going to hit the 40 mark total cases today. :(
no logic just my gut telling me (mainly due to a lag in results more than anything)

    From 21 to 40

    We'll see soon enough.

Is there any explanation as to why the total is so high in Italy? We know it originated in China so we'd expect to see their numbers. It just seems so random that Italy is the next highest.

Looking at those Italian numbers. Holy Fooking Moly.

If we don't call @35, numbers that were given to me in good faith by people I'd trust would leave me questioning their (the people who'd told me) abilities.

Did WHO not address this weeks ago? They assumed the same but 320K were tested In hubei province and only 0.002% without symptoms had it?

They expected this large mild amount of untested people and couldnt find it.

5% in Italy. No point in looking at individual countries.

    Today.
Asian market , mostly all shelves full.

    Spotted one masked avenger.

Enough Rice to feed an army.

Took a detour to Musgraves, all shelves seemed full until i went to the hand sanatizer shelf, not a bottle to be had. Not too many wipes either but some.
    IMG-7400.jpg

But this is where it gets interesting, I found out where all the toilet rolls in Dublin are....

China's numbers are like in all honestly probably fake. The party cannot lose face.

I'm guessing our numbers will go up from 21 cases to about 28 or 29 cases?

    We'll find out @6pm.

Hopefully it’s not more, the last time there was a fairly serious conference like this (HSE last week) there was a bit of a jump (was it 4?). Having the Taoiseach on would have me concerned especially with parade cancelled and quite drastic projections.

I am in a lucky position that I can and will pay my staff if they need to take a couple of weeks off due to sickness. Believe me I am a very fair, kind and good employer. I can go to bed every night knowing I have done my best for both myself and my staff. My issue is not with that. My issue is with the panic this is causing amongst the public through misinformation by people who don't really know what is happening.

I think most people understand that a economic hit
to the country hurts business and by extension workers. I'm certainly not disputing that. Probably the most vulnerable workers.
On the other hand the information coming from reliable sources, HSE, WHO, many respected health professionals is increasingly worrying. This cannot be put down to hysterical panic online (although there is some of that) a lot of people are genuinely concerned and importantly basing that concern on information from reliable sources.
I wish you well in your business, but this will become a difficult situation. No easy answers or solutions.

Are there any clear statistics on number of tests carried out per country? Just heard a “fact” that Italy was way and ahead in the number of people tested in the early stage.

It's rapidly growing in a scenario where 120k people have the virus.

It's a massive leap to extrapolate that growth to 1.2m people having the virus, or 12m, or 120m or 1.2bn.

Watch the video at about 7:50, he explains quite clearly how you can have it be 120k or 1.2m based on making small-seeming changes (such as introducing social distancing). It is neither a massive leap to assume 1.2bn people might get the virus or that we can contain it at 1.2m if we took the correct steps.

In a private facebook group for parents of kids with cancer there is absolute panic over being unable to source hand gel, masks, etc. At any time there are so many families going through what is new to a lot of people, stringent handwashing and disinfecting of surfaces. These parents have enough anxiety to be dealing with without this added burden. Thankfully my own daughter is recovered now but this whole isolation/cleaning is really dialling up my PTSD

I'd hope the so called preppers read this and feel ashamed of themselves but I know there's no chance of any self reflection. To the panic is good crowd, this is the results of people panicking without good reason and stockpiling goods that other people need more than you do.

Here is the thing Ciaran, when do you think the crisis will be over? You cant stop people taking AL etc for ever I suspect. I think this crisis will unfortunately highlight how understaffed and underresourced the HSE is. I suspect if you went to any hospital most staff would say that once people are on AL etc they are already understaffed. Overwork is likely to make front line staff more vulnerable to infection and also less careful with contact precautions if tired - a tricky situation
I don't really get this trolley thing.

You can't put Covid patients on trolleys in A&E. You can't put them in A&E full stop. They will infect all around them if you did.

Just look at some of the images in China. People wheeled into isolation centres while on trolleys in something akin to that used on premature babies.

We're not really prepared, lets be honest.

Suspected cases aren't being brought to ED, they are being brought directly to isolation wards and worked-up there

I don’t care where they copy ideas from as long as they’re good ideas that support slowing the spread of the virus. At least they are beginning to do things. More positive steps like this and any panic will begin to subside.

Exactly. Lets copy all the good ideas from other countries.

I would expect a significant increase in cases today. A number of positive cases have been identified in CUH on top of the 1 previous case who is now in the Mater. I'd expect there are others around the other clusters.

They really need to get someone else in to do the counting, you can tell the guy they have in is being paid by the hour.

Can't see anyone not voting for it.

Would be interesting to get all parties on board working together to pass any required legislation to help with the epidemic. Hopefully will be a sign of how things will work in the tough times ahead.

Is there any clear number for Italy or is it only “roughly 1800”?

Course there is. If the Italians are only testing those with serious symptoms the resultant CFR is always going to be higher.

Classes can't be done online with ease. Where do you get this notion from?

Australian kids in remote areas did a lot of their schooling talking to a teacher hundreds of km away over shortwave radio link. Online is a doddle in comparison.

    Panic stations!

Last time it was pushed back we had multiple new cases.

But clearly kites have been flown today and I'd be surprised if it wasn't over 10 new cases.
