    I always find it amusing that roads and railways were built the way they were. Bridges going across bends etc seemed a bit brainless yet it is a common enough sight around the country.

    N24 same thing - another road of only peripheral interest to the burghers of Kilkenny City, the construction of that rates grabber ghost Shopping centre in Ferrybank, the boundary extension saga and so on.

    How do you explain the worst sections of the N24 are in Co Tipperary then? The section between Tipperary town and Cahir is awful- are they sabotaging Waterford, Limerick or themselves? The best and newest part of the N24 is actually within Co. Kilkenny!

    National Primary route funded by central government- these haven't been a local government function for about 40 years so I respectfully suggest you update your conspiracy theories.

    The old red Ford Escort broken down is bizzare too in the video- people had a far more cavalier attitude to safety in general- i know cars (especially back then) could break down anywhere but there's a safer gateway about 10 metres further on you'd imagine would be a lot safer!

    roads were bent to go under or over rail lines using shortest possible bridge.
    Rail lines just ploughed through in as straight a line as possible.
    If you use GeoHive maps and slide between modern maps and the 1837 map, pre railway, you will see these dog-legs
    in roads all over the place.
    I wonder how today's roads will look in 50 years?

    Fertiliser and cement. It ran until summer 1995 - the last train caught fire on the way down to Waterford. The station buildings in New Ross were demolished in 1997.

    Could be a handy Little commuter service And link to the main Waterford Dublin line had Irish rail been interested. Shame to see it close. Now they want to bury it under another Greenway

    Whatever about now, it certainly would have been useful over the last 50 years when the N25 wasn't bypassed and the new bridge was under construction. The passenger trains ceased in 1963. There were occasional excursions during the 1970s and I remember getting a train down to Waterford c.1980 and coming back on The Galley cruise ship (which is re-launching again this summer). Although someone else tells me that excursion never happened but my memory is pretty good.

    The Rosslare to Waterford line was allowed fail due to poor timetabling and was very handy if you were working / studying in Waterford. From Campile, it only took 15 minutes or so.

    The proposed greenway will also include the old Red Bridge that's visible from my parents' house. Used to cross it regularly as a teenager. Ambitious plans; not sure how it will work out to be honest.

    Speaking of a cavalier attitude to safety....i recently passed a car pulled in at the side of a major road....a road which had the bare minimum of a hard shoulder and all because he was on the phone. No matter the time of place there is always the danger that some dope will be doing something dangerous.

    Greenways are good though.

    A commuter railway between Waterford and New Ross would in no way viable.

    They did but less than the time spent sat behind a lumbering HGV/farm vehicle! The motorway and DC network plus better cars is why there are far fewer deaths now - little or nothing to do with driver behavior.

    Probably very little acceleration in the car- very common back then !

    The road section at 03:22, is that the road at Glenmore going towards Ross before it was widened? If so that big house on the right was demolished a few years later as part of the widening.

    Wouldn’t have a clue well before my time and not from the area! My understanding is that most of the old road was completely bypassed and left as it was and a completely new alignment took over?

    Drove Limerick to Rosslare and back every 10 days late 71 to late 72 and occasionally for 4 years thereafter. Married the woman to save me the frequent journeys. Remember the turn well, and quite a few more.

    I was down that way recently, on the semi circle bit between the two I suddenly remembered I was on the old N25/E30 :eek: hardly seemed possible it could have been such a designated route

    By the look of the black smoke I'd say she's a diesel conversion, 0-60 in two days from one of the slowest diesel engines ever made!!!

    Wasn't there some discussion about demolishing the Red Bridge?

    The plans show it will be used - obviously reinforced - necessary to connect the Rosbercon wastleland and the Mile Tunnel.

    Pretty sure yes. Shared the clip on Facebook over weekend and one guy said it was good to see the old house at Glenmore again.

    The road from Ross to Enniscorthy was worse than that. I remember leaving Enniscorthy at 7am and regularly being late for 9:15 in the college, crazy stuff.

    The Petrol station was owned by Willie Redmond who also lived in the adjoining house and traded in Jet fuels.
    He sold up sometime in the 90s and for a time the petrol station was run by Anthony Connick, now a New Ross Councillor.
    His father was John Connick who owned the Modern Motors (Fiat) garage in Rosbercon.
    Anthony's brother Sean was a Wexford TD (although from, and lived in Co. Kilkenny :) from 2007 to 2011 and was instrumental in getting the current bypass prioritised.
    Luckily when the govt changed in 2011, Brendan Howlin was sufficiently local and had sufficient influence to prevent the project from being suspended.

    Getting back to the petrol station, a local man (Martin Nolan), who had previously traded cars from his home further along the road, moved his business to beside the petrol station. Some time later, the house adjoining the station was sold and was bought by Kilkenny County Council.
    That proved the death knell for the garage and it fell into disrepair shortly afterwards although Martin Nolan continued trading cars the until his death a few years ago.

    It really was a lost opportunity for that petrol station because its competitors on that side of New Ross, Bolands (Shell) and Texaco (remember the big storage tanks?) closed up the fuel retail shortly afterwards, allowing the current Gala station to grow from a haphazard set of pumps to its current size.

    Yes, that's correct, just below Griffin's garage. This is the part now, you can see the remaining part of the old road in the maps photo.

    For all their talk about the Europeans being shocked etc, Walter Rohrl in the camper van was bombing along in that clip.

    Does anyone remember the multilingual sign outside New Ross at the former IAWS entrance that said "Conduire a gauche, Links fahren" ?
    Considering that it was 40 miles from Rosslare, I used to think that if they've made it this far on the wrong side of the road, they'll probably be ok the rest of the way.

    Actually, the biggest problem with foreign drivers driving on the wrong side is not leaving Rosslare, but the following morning after a nights rest, then getting into the car and driving out onto an empty road only to discover that they are on the wrong side. There have been quite a few fatal accidents over the years from this.

    It has happened to me on occasion and it is a rude shock to realise one is driving on the road on the wrong side and not realising it. I now put a post-it note on the steering wheel for the first few days if I am abroad.
