"“When I say protect, I mean right now. Not wait until things get worse. Say no large crowds, no long trips. And above all, don't get on a cruise ship.”"

At this stage, anyone boarding a cruise ship can be called reckless about their health (especially given the average age on the ships).

No government or cruise line wants to male the decision and be responsible for it, but at this stage all large cruises should be cancelled until the situation becomes more clear (I know this would cost a lot, but even from a financial perspective, quarantined ships will end up costing even more to the cruise lines as not only they will have to cancel further cruises while the ship is quarantined, but they will also have to cover the expense to take care of their passengers and staff on the ship during the quarantine).

I'd say this stuff would have killed every disease known to man..
Give germs the chop with this (got when doing Kung Fu years ago, it's still in some shops, at very reduce prices). The achol-sting off it would drop a donkey.

Ideally one would remember not to touch their face with some big yellow gloves on.

I have a thing for big yellow gloves.

We need some leadership now in this country - I wouldn't have voted for it but if I was Michael Martin, I would be forming a government with SF and the Greens - Remove Harris et Al - make stringent measures to lessen the spread of this disease and some clarity and relief for us all.

I remember the foot and mouth outbreak I was really proud how it was handled and it was evident it was from the position of prevention and containment. It's too late for that here but I think if allowed we would all do our best to stop this from spreading and crippling our health service further - the current government really underestimate the will of the Irish people.

Apologies for a political leaning rant :)

The virus had at least one month of completely uncontained spread in China before anyone even knew what was going on. Italy got it straight out the gate, perhaps again even hit before anyone knew what on earth was going on.

Yes, people want data, but comparing Ireland to China and Italy is stupid.

It's the same bloody virus... expecting it to behave differently here is cloud cuckoo wishful thinking.

The only difference in spread between the countries is when community transmission started, and the seriousness of the efforts made to contain it.

If missed the opportunity back in December, Vodka may do.

Also cheap aftershaves will do, just watch out for unexpected romances as some people like smell of 'hia karate' and 'dude musk for man'.
Might be a bonus for the re-population project next year.
Way simpler than that. Alcohol based mouthwash would be one that would be far better than vodka(which doesn't have enough alcohol). Old fashioned iodine(or a derivative) another. It kills damned near everything and doesn't bugger the skin too much. Smells a bit mind.

The trick is to look beyond where your average facebook type looks, or more to the point doesn't look. Hell, the average IQ is 100, which means there are a lot of mountbreathers below that line who stock up on bog roll for no actual bloody reason. This kind of emergency brings them to the surface. Consider the mask shortage. Some pharmacies price gouging for paper masks that do feck all, unless you already have the virus, yet walk into a paint supply place and buy the same for pennies, or the significantly more effective respirators with replaceable filters for under 30 quid.

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

    Yep.

Anything like pinpads, self checkout screens, atms would want to be wiped clean after every couple of users. Unlikely to happen and theres been no advisories on it.

You can't compare China and Italy to Ireland. You can't expect the same thing to happen. Italy didn't even know they had a problem until it was too late, I think we were on the ball straight away. Plus people here are doing their part, everyone is treating everyone like they have Leprosy

I remember it well, most of those aftershaves were 99.9% alcohol and smelt the same, the scent additive must have walked through it on stilts

It is thought at this stage the virus is beyond containment. In Dublin alone, it is widely speculated that the number could be as big as 500 right now and with many multitudes of people interacting so frequently, be it in pubs, restaurants, work, this number will indeed grow at a rate approaching the true growth exponent.

This number could be correct but only by pure chance you are pulling numbers out of your ass.

    Widely speculated by who?

I am sick of hearing about Paddy's Day. There will be life and a virus after Paddy's Day.
The Irish always get caught up on the stupid small stuff.

Cheltenham and Premier League football are far far bigger events and the UK allow both to continue. Paddy's Day Parade in Dublin is a gathering that will last but a short time, doesn't' compare to the UK's willingness to allow mass gatherings of 100's of 1000's of people multiple times a weeks

    Unions vs HSE
Health service unions have said they will not cooperate with certain new HSE proposals providing for extensive outsourcing and redeployment, along with a ban on industrial action, as part of a strategy to tackle the Covid-19 outbreak.

The document was circulated to health service unions on Friday - but in their response, the unions described the ban on industrial action as unacceptable, and called for it to be withdrawn.

They also told the HSE they would not accept unilateral outsourcing, adding that any such proposals on this issue must be in line with the provisions of the current Public Service Stability Agreement.

In addition, they demanded that the lifting of "recruitment barriers" be extended to staff acutely involved in Covid-19 diagnosis and treatment, and to craft roles in maintenance.

No but you can get FROM your hands.

People put their hands in the mouth nose on their face all day long. Anything you can do to reduce the chance of the virus being on your hands is a bonus.

The virus could be on the gloves, wearing gloves doesn't eliminate face touching.

Nor does it eliminate them spreading the virus, unless you change them every time you check out a new customer.

A doctor doesn't use the same pair of gloves for every patient.

UK have their head up their arse. They will pay a huge price. They will over take Italy and China in time.
