Should I get a trade paint thanks

I'm painting white over varnished timber

Fleetwood Bloxx It. Fast drying oil based primer. You can paint over it with water based so the paint won't yellow over time

dok_golf, can I ask if, as a pro, you use the Bloxx on it's own or in combination with Zinnser BIN. I painted some varnished doors last year using BIN as the primer then having read your recommendation of Bloxx I used that on some other doors. Top coat was trade Dulux waterbased satinwood (have a very good local independent paint shop). The BIN doors have held up well but do get occasional small knocks that have to be repaired the Bloxx doors seem better. I'm wondering if a combination of BIN and Bloxx would be best and if so would you use Bloxx as the first coat and then BIN or the other way around?

Bloxx It first followed by BIN. Shellac primers ( BIN) are essentially nail varnish and are brittle. By putting Bloxx IT ( or any other adhesion primer) on first, it cushions the BIN and makes it that little bit more forgiving. However, if you are putting on varnished doors, provided the varnish is intact, then there would be no need for BIN as the varnish should ( in theory) hold the tannins back.
