Another boring episode with a stupid game ending

I'm glad it wasn't just me. Not the best at all.

The pacing of the whole series has been poor in comparison to the book. Agree that this weeks episode was particularly slow though.

Definitely think they extended it a little too far with 10 episodes. The first two were cracking episodes but it did slow down a bit. Still enjoying it overall though

The first 2 episodes covered half the book, hence dragging the guts out of the episodes since then.

It was in response to the following:

It's always people who are concerned about being called racist who are the first ones to flipping mention it.

And to say that the woman who plays Holly in The Outsider is playing her role badly is just nonsensical. But if people prefer the actress in Mr M, that's perfectly fair enough of course. She is very good.
Thank you for proving my point. The actress playing Holly is a poor choice. She doesn't get the character at all. Whoever altered her character to have her sleeping with someone should hang their head is shame because it simply wouldn't happen. I'm not criticising the black actresses acting skills, merely pointing out that she really fooked this roll up. Usually any negative criticism of a black person is met with accusations of racism, well done you.

But it’s an adaptation from the book so things can be changed to make it more interesting on screen, it happens in most adaptations
Not everyone reads the books btw and are coming into this blind not even knowing who the character is or that she was in mr Mercedes for example
I think she’s doing a fine job With the role
It's not an adaptation of the character. If you read Mr Mercedes you'd realise that the rich white woman's luxury car being used to slaughter innocent people so desperate to find work that they'd queue outside a job fair all night was an intrinsic part of the story. Somebody decided they needed diversity and chose a black actress because she is black, no other reason. It's ludicrous and it shouldn't happen. She has made a mess of the character and that is what happens when you make a choice between choosing someone who is right for the role and choosing someone because of the colour of their skin.

Watching this with my OH neither of us have read the book or seen any other related series
We both think the character Holly is one of the best in show

Ben mendelshon ( Ralph ) is the best for me with Cynthia (holly) a close second

Won't disagree with that would also add in Julianne Nicholson . I don't often do TV series but this is a compelling and addictive watch

I think Holly is an excellent choice of character. I don't see how she "made a mess of the character".

I wish I hadn't started watching this - thought it was only 8 episodes but it's 10 (and hope to god they actually finish the story)

Last episode bar 5 or so mins was just full on meandering around - typical SK fare

Both actresses who play Holly (this and Mr M) are excellent imo. Beyond me how the one in The Outsider is making a mess of the character.

Why in the name of god though was a man from Burton Upon Trent in England cast as a man from Tennessee? I love Paddy Considine but his accent is just dreadful. The guy playing his brother, Max Beesley (from Manchester - are there not actors fitting their description from the southeastern United States) does a better job but not great either.

Do you not watch much TV or films? Many an English actor playing Americans, Knives Out with Daniel Craig...

Why are people referencing Mr Mercedes, is this a follow on to that?

A lot of Stephen King's stuff is based in the same "world" or "universe".

The character of Holly Gibney originates from the Mr Mercedes Trilogy of books, and The outsider is the first book in his planned Holly Gibney trilogy.

And his accent is very poor too.

I know many British and Australians play Americans - and do a fine job - but sometimes it's a strange choice when the accent is difficult.

I actually thought this weeks episode was an improvement on the last couple, & being honest the accents dont really bother me at all.
The changes to the story from that of the book have become less of an issue for me at this stage & I'm just along for the ride now, looking forward to seeing how they close out the last 2 episodes.

I didn't cop at all that it's the "same" Holly from Mr Mercedes, though looking at it now, despite obviously being completely different actresses they are very similar in character portrayal. That's an interesting fact.

I don't really have any issue with the accents in the show, though I think Paddy Considine's isn't great.

There have been some major changes from the book. Claude goes to visit his elderly mother not his brother and she lives in a very modest house. Am I remembering it wrong or was the cave area not deserted in the book? I don't remember all those people attending a festival at the time. Also, this idea of Holly having a boyfriend is just weird.

If a book is made for tv exactly as it’s written it would be terrible viewing
When the TV version of a book changes hugely important details from the book it makes terrible viewing because it isn't being true to the story. Change for changes sake is pointless. In the case of changing the person Claude visits to being his brother instead of his mother it made no sense as the bulk of the visit was at the house anyway. This business with making a kid obsessed with sabre toothed tiger paw prints from thousands of years ago in the mine is not what was in the book, in the book people had died in the cave and never been found and there were rumours about it. Instead of lurking in a crowd at a festival that wasn't in the book the creature was in the cave still being fed by the Cop. There are changes and then there's making an entirely different story and using the title of the book.

an adaptation is not normally true to story, they are loosely based on the story and in some cases have just used the title and outline plot to attract an already hooked audience
the visit to the brother worked well for me as it gave another character for the team to talk to rather than all stare claude
you mention something about a cave, that sounds very long winded to explain on screen and the episodes are drawn out enough as it is without adding another strain of mystery to a cave.
We'll have to agree to disagree. There was no reason to change the character of the relative and the cave was a tourist attraction in an isolated location which is why the Outsider chose it. It was also the scene of the final showdown between the Outsider and the Cops. It didn't add anything to the story to have ageing hippy grandparents on a road trip with their grand kids in my opinion. This is so loosely based that it's almost another book. It isn't too much to expect that the television version would be as close to the original story of the book as possible and if the book readers didn't enjoy the book there'd be no reason for them to watch the series rather than people who enjoy the book being disappointed by a loosely based adaptation.

I agree I see some similarities with the book but they've changed a lot. I recall in the book there was some disaster some kids got lost in the caves and more adults get lost looking for them, this was from the past. I think from the preview for tonight's episode. Also I think from the preview and recollection of the books Hoskins will be practising his sniping skills. It will be interesting what the series will change in the last two episodes to wrap up the season.

I agree that the changes from the book have been disappointing but to be fair I'm just happy to relax & enjoy the ride at this stage. Its still a good story despite the changes (Its the pacing that I'd have more issues with than the story changes TBH) and am looking forward to see how they close it out.
The caves will still be included in some form as they were referenced in the last episode & Hoskins snook back into his apartment to steal his rifle so I suspect we'll still get something similar to the book ending (Which IMO was inflicted with the usual SK problem of it being a largely poor unsatisfying ending to a good story)

Yes enjoyed that. Covered a lot of what happens towards the finale of the book. I wonder will it be an extended episode next week? I do hope so

Quality show. Haven't read the book thankfully judging by some of the comments so that'll be a good read once the show is over. Love the slow pace as well. Build the tension. Roll on the finale.
