Rate your game. (with fun)

27-02-2020 8:41pmHeard this on a good pod cast No Lay Up - the idea of rating your game. Being honest. The point was - we do not do it enough.
Bit of fun too.
From 1 to 10 (general comments to give an idea what a mark is, I made these up, not an exact science )
1 = 36 or higher handicap stuff - can hardly do it - can't get out of a bunker - 4 putts - miss the ball fully - literally a beginner.
2 = 32 Handicap - can pull it off the odd time
3 = 27 handicap - Hope there - the odd one putt, can hit a fairway, play GIR
4 = 23 handicap - could break 90 with this quality - but have bad days
5 = 18 handicap - a golfer can do it all - 80 one day soon
6 = 12 handicap - single figures is no big deal - work is the problem
7 = 9 handicap - is the west of Ireland really a big deal
8 = 6 handicap - Who does the club pro think he is
9 = 3 or less - Why do I work in a bank - the challenge tour looks a laugh
10 = + handicap I could beat Rory and he is not Irish anyway (joke mods )
Areas (mark each out of 10 ) - then mark where you could get to, with practice and reasonable effort - or even a level you were at. General comment if needed

Any other comment - what your ultimate target and goal is.

1) Swing and strike
Mark = 7
Target / ability = 8
Comment - One of my strengths
2) Driving Distance
Mark = 7
Target / ability = 7
Comment I'd like to get a few more yards but at the wrong side of 40 i won't be getting any longer
3) Driving accuracy
Mark = 7
Target / ability = 8
Comment - Driving accuracy is reasonably good.
4) Iron play and mid game - GIRs etc
Mark = 7
Target / ability = 8
Comment - Still in the realm of ball striking so fairly decent from me.
5) 50 to 100 yard shots
Mark = 5
Target / ability = 7
Comment - This is where i need to improve massively, as a single figure golfer i should be much better from this range.
6) Short game including bunker play 50 yards or less
Mark = 4
Target / ability = 7
Comment - chipping and pitching is the worst part of my game by far.
7) Putting
Mark = 8
Target / ability = 9
Comment - My putting is good, 3 putting is not something i suffer from within reason. Inside 30 feet i would rarely 3 putt (i'm not saying never)
8) Mental Game, including emotional control
Mark = 8
Target / ability = 9
Comment - I never get angry on the course and i cope well with disasters. I do get nervous but i consider my ability to not crack under pressure as a strength particularly in matchplay.
9) Competitiveness
Mark = 8
Target / ability = 9
Comment - I love competition, its the reason i play the game. I wouldn't be all that interested in casual golf.
10) Practice dedication
Mark = 3
Target / ability = 8
Its a bit of a farce really, chipping and pitching is the worst part of my game but i never practice it to improve. I don't know why exactly.0 -
1) Swing and strike
Mark = 6, swing awful, strike ok on a good day
Target / ability = 8
Comment - lessons this year to have a more consistent action
2) Driving Distance
Mark = 7
Target / ability = 8
Comment - long enough, accuracy more of a focus now
3) Driving accuracy
Mark = 6
Target / ability = 8
Comment - hoping lessons will improve this
4) Iron play and mid game - GIRs etc
Mark = 7
Target / ability = 8
Comment - irons generally one of my better areas but, again, need more consistency
5) 50 to 100 yard shots
Mark = 5
Target / ability = 8
Comment - one area where my action causes a lot of problem
6) Short game including bunker play 50 yards or less
Mark = 5
Target / ability = 8
Comment - as above
7) Putting
Mark = 8
Target / ability = 9
Comment - has become one of my strengths from what was a real weakness 5+ years ago - mostly down to the invention of th4e SuperStroke grip!
8) Mental Game, including emotional control
Mark = 8
Target / ability = 9
Comment - have improved hugely here and never really lose the rag - pretty good course managrement at this stage
9) Competitiveness
Mark = 6
Target / ability = 6
Comment - it is what it is
10) Practice dedication
Mark = 5
Target / ability =8
Comment- looking at a lesson every 6 weeks this year and working hard on practise - including working with the mirror at home on takeaway especially0 -
1) Swing and strike
Mark = 7, Grew up with my own swing with no formal input till I was 35 years old , I've reduce size - but it is far from good.
Target / ability = 8
Comment - I have to accept what I have , but keep working on basics of grip and stance.
2) Driving Distance
Mark = 8
Target / ability = 8
Comment - Was crazy long , but as someone mentioned wrong side of 40 , you notice stuff all over your body
3) Driving accuracy
Mark = 5
Target / ability = 7
Comment - With a shorter swing and less everything there is hope this is actually improving - signs already.
4) Iron play and mid game - GIRs etc
Mark = 8
Target / ability = 9
Comment - This , when I'm on form, is very unusual, put any mid iron in my hands and I get way more GIRs than most. This left me in 2019 , but hope for 2020.
5) 50 to 100 yard shots
Mark = 4
Target / ability = 7
Comment - Worst part of game - near yips at times - 100 is kind of ok , but below that game over.
6) Short game including bunker play 50 yards or less
Mark = 6
Target / ability = 8
Comment - Wedges still a real problem , but can kind of cheat with 9 irons and can get out of any bunker in any lie.
7) Putting
Mark = 7
Target / ability = 8/9
Comment - Same as Big Chap - have had bad times, but there is hope here , can have rounds with 4 birds etc. So, can kind of do it.
8) Mental Game, including emotional control
Mark = 8
Target / ability = 9
Comment - have improved hugely here too over the years - but probably haven't won enough to mark as high as I have
9) Competitiveness
Mark = 8
Target / ability = 9
Comment - At times has been way too high , crazy high - in fact I think it probably cost me in the end.
10) Practice dedication
Mark = 9
Target / ability =10
Comment - Dedication is crazy, in fact burn out level. For someone who isn't even a serious amateur and very limited by core swing. This is an area I'm happy to let slide - and shift more to enjoy the game and practice.
General Comment- Took a bit of time out in 2018/2019 - played but stepped away from being a bit too crazy about it all. Was very good for my relationship with golf and I think for my game. I'm looking forward to 2020 more than any season in a while. And genuinely feel - a bit less has put me in a place to achieve more.
I'm going to try fool myself anyway. What a game.0 -
1) Swing and strike
Mark = 6
Target / ability = 8
Comment: have terrible flexibility & a bit of a chicken-wing on follow through. Strike is probably pretty good, I generally find a spot pretty close to centre of the face. Last year was a very good year for me handicap wise due to accepting & going with the limitation, but was too far across the ball. Took a lesson in November & trying to get back to something more neutral over the winter. If it goes to plan itll look pretty good.
2) Driving Distance
Mark = 6
Target / ability = 7
Comment: I'd be above average for an amateur, but not long. Currently doing strength alongside a posture & mobility set in the gym as well as trying out overspeed training to try gain a few extra mph.
3) Driving accuracy
Mark = 7
Target / ability = 8
Comment: Think my home course has really helped with this as there are a lot of relatively tight tree lines fairways to deal with.
4) Iron play and mid game - GIRs etc
Mark = 8
Target / ability = 9
Comment: generally very confident with anything from a hybrid down to a full wedge in my hands. Definitely one of the stronger parts of my game.
5) 50 to 100 yard shots
Mark = 6
Target / ability = 8
Comment: solid from 80-100, weak from 50-80. Trying to put in a more structured approach to my swings with different wedges in hand.
6) Short game including bunker play 50 yards or less
Mark = 5 (7 bunkers)
Target / ability = 7
Comment: very comfortable with greenside bunkers. Like Fix, can bluff my way round with an 8-iron bump'n'run, but far too inconsistent with a wedge from greenside.
7) Putting
Mark = 8
Target / ability = 9
Comment: very solid over short putts & decent lag putting but don't make enough mid range putts. Rarely 3-putt
8) Mental Game, including emotional control
Mark = 7
Target / ability = 9
Comment: still have the odd blow-up, but never hold on to it & can move on well from a bad hole.
9) Competitiveness
Mark = 6
Target / ability = 7
Comment: enjoy winning, but don't lose any sleep over a loss
10) Practice dedication
Mark = 4
Target / ability = 7
Comment: have been pretty diligent with the fitness & speed training, but at the expense of golf practice. Always try get to the course early enough for a bit of range time & short game/putting practice but not enough lessons and time outside of the weekends0 -
Fair play , sorry takes a fair bit of effort.
But actually a worthwhile exercise to be honest with yourself.0 -

1) Swing and strike
Mark = 4
Target / ability = 7
Comment way way way to long of a backswing and no amount of lessons have changed it. Strike ain't bad though most days unless very tired or hungover.
2) Driving Distance
Mark = 5
Target / ability = 7
Comment average as in around 240 yards. Improvement since fitting
3) Driving accuracy
Mark = 5
Target / ability = 7
Comment again big improvement since fitting. Increased fir by 30 %
4) Iron play and mid game - GIRs etc
Mark = 5
Target / ability = 8
Comment lots of work on alignment over the winter has helped. Was very far out with shoulders very open and an over the top swing.
5) 50 to 100 yard shots
Mark = 8
Target / ability = 9
Comment probably the best part at the moment. New pitching wedge is unreal and I expect to be within 20 feet most times.
6) Short game including bunker play 50 yards or less
Mark = 7
Target / ability = 8
Comment always relished a tough bunker shot. As for greenside chipping see 5.
7) Putting
Mark = 4
Target / ability = 8
Comment terrible. Had yips. Fixed but lagging disappeared. Need to overhaul it in next couple of months.
8) Mental Game, including emotional control
Mark = 5
Target / ability = 8
Comment course management can be a struggle. Too many voices in head saying stupid things... Dr ruth would have a field day never mind what Dr Bob would think.
9) Competitiveness
Mark = 8
Target / ability = 9
Comment i hate losing... Even more than I love winning
10) Practice dedication
Mark = 2
Target / ability = 6
Comment 2 young kids, new puppy and crap weather have ruined that.0
