Hello hoping someone can help or advise...

So we were advised to start our little fella on baby rice last week, as his centiles chart is off and all that goes.. All going good and he loves the rice in fairness to him. I was just wondering about the fruits and veg should I leave them out at the moment and maybe start them at the six month mark or just go with the weaning routine?

May seem like a daft question, just we arent weaning him to get off the bottles it is just for weight gain.. Keep forgetting to ask the doc when there

I think I saw somewhere formula fed babies can start solids at 4 months and breastfed babies should wait till 6 months? I could be wrong as am suffering baby brain at the mo ;)

Thanks Millem, you would normally start to wean between 4 and 6mths breast or bottle... With out first we waiting until the 6mths, I understand all the weaning ins and outs but it is just that we are giving out little fella baby rice for the purpose of building up his weight as the docs are''nt happy that he is too slight for his height ( haha that should be a rap song : ) ).. So he suggested we start him on baby rice

Sure then if you can just leave the other food till when it suits you?

Hazy memory from my first but avocado is the best baby friendly high calorie density food.

You wouldn't want to give'em anything too heavy. the veg that'll mash up, might be a bit though on'em to digest.

Have you tried attending a dietician? They could come up with a full plan and way of getting the necessary calories in, advise on when to add fruit veg and other foods etc better than a doctor will. They may also advise high calorie milks

Hi thanks for all the replies, i understand what ye are saying but my big question is would you start with the extras now like fruit and veg or just leave it with the rice until 6mths. I completely understand the foods etc for weaning but we arent weaning off bottles it is just for gain

Thanks angeldelight no didnt really think of that.. to be honest we arent that worried over it, as he seems happy out and is developing as such as he should tis just weight, and his sister was slight too so keeping it in the family as such

I personally wouldn’t Milly. You don’t want him to fill up on low calorie foods like fruit and veg and reduce milk feeds if he has weight gain issues.

    Has he dropped percentiles?

Rice is one of those BRAT foods that can cause constipation in small babies, that’s the one thing I would be conscious of, if he’s having it regularly, with no food that can have the opposing affect

thanks Bee see that is what i am thinking, as we arent weaning him off milk it is kinda of different... He dropped once and that was it so that is what they are saying.. I had it in my head to ask the nurse in all the last day and completely forgot might just ring her tomorrow...

Good to know jLm with the rice causing constipation will keep an eye out for that one so far so good

Generally what I’ve heard is dropping gone percentile is ok and 2 would be more worrisome. I’m sure you know yourself how he’s getting on anyway. You can tell if your baby is happy or not I would say. Some babies like people just don’t follow the normal weight trends. I’m one of them and after 37 years I’m blue in the face from explaining to people it’s just my genetic make up.

If you do want a 2nd professional opinion there is a dietician in Cork who specialises in children. I did her Baby weaning class before I started with my first. I’m sure she’d answer a few questions over email etc if you wanted reassurance. Her business is called solid start.

thanks Bee06, a Cork lady im sure you told me this before but same here just leaving in the West... I must look at his chart there to see how many he dropped.. I am defo on your line of thoughts that it is just genetics with him, thank god in some ways he got it from his Dads side as did she, but then equally it would be happy to have a nice medium...

I do think we know alright when they are and are;nt happy, like he is such an easy baby quite relaxed, but strong and all that goes he is just slight..

Might check out your lady there and see, it isnt that I want a second opinion as such, more to know are we thinking in the correct manner so to speak

Back from the nurse today and sure he is doing mighty put on lots of weight this week. So I remembered to ask her, and yep all is good now to give to the baby. You wean as normal which i still think is odd but she said it is fine to do. Just that you are starting early..

Phonenix i have the avacado in my head since you said it, such a mighty food to give to anyone really (if you like it) so next week im going to try that and some apple see how it goes.

    thanks for all the help
