A sadistic mastermind unleashes a twisted form of justice in SPIRAL, the terrifying new chapter from the book of SAW. Working in the shadow of an esteemed police veteran (Samuel L. Jackson), brash Detective Ezekiel “Zeke” Banks (Chris Rock) and his rookie partner (Max Minghella) take charge of a grisly investigation into murders that are eerily reminiscent of the city’s gruesome past. Unwittingly entrapped in a deepening mystery, Zeke finds himself at the center of the killer’s morbid game.

SPIRAL stars Chris Rock, Max Minghella, Marisol Nichols, and Samuel L. Jackson, and is produced by the original SAW team of Mark Burg and Oren Koules. The film is directed by Darren Lynn Bousman and written by Josh Stolberg & Pete Goldfinger

Saw the trailer before seeing this thread. Was surprised at the end when it turned out to be a saw film.

That is a weirdly credible cast for a Saw movie. Chris Rock is producing too? Ted, I'm hugely confused.

Honestly, I thought the gore porn era had passed with Horror. I wonder if attaching it to the brand will do as much damage to its prospects as it will enhance them.

Having a look through boxofficemojo and they seem pretty certain to make money. Even the recent ones tend to be made for 10m and make well over 100m. This one doesn't seem to be fully committing to the Saw name but also wants the clout that if offers. If this gets good word of mouth and with the cast it has it wouldn't shock me to see it be a runaway hit. Also wouldn't shock me to see it come and go with little fuss.

I am looking forward to it. I really enjoyed the first 7 films, yes, all of them. So more of it can't be a good thing. I wasn't sure what the trailer was about when I first saw it, as I only saw 'Spiral' and Chris Rock, but once the music started I immediately knew it was a Saw film. Need to have a Sawathon before then though. Checking the running times... 666 minutes!! :eek:

The Chris Rock casting will make or break this. A lot of the comments I've seen online for the trailer are from people who say they can't stop thinking they're watching him in a sketch.

This is hands down the worst of all the Saw movies, and I say that as someone who found the "last" Saw movie painfully bad.

It looks like a low-budget cop TV show and has a wafer thin plot we've already seen countless times before with painful dialogue, fairly bad acting and a pathetic "twist".

Chris Rock can be decent enough at times (he was alright in Fargo recently) but he's atrocious in this. It's like he's constantly in skit mode, completely over-acting every scene.

I really expected a lot more from this. I didn't expect miracles but at the very least I expected a competent improvement on previous installments....but it's worse in every single way.

It's not even enjoyable, it's just utterly terrible half-baked nonsense trading on a brand name. And it looks like total garbage, like a low budget b-movie, despite having the highest budget out of the lot.

Anyway, rant over. Please don't waste your time. 2.5/10 is being generous.

I lasted 40 min and said F**k this and switched it off, rubbish movie

I was going to watch this tonight. I really enjoyed all of the Saw movies (Please don't judge me).
I found the last two of the series good, and enjoyed the way it finished up.
So just take me as fairly easygoing on these things. I know it sounds like a silly question, considering your review above, but is there any way I could find Spiral enjoyable. Or should I just abandon it altogether and look for something to watch that is more highly regarded.
I was also thinking of The Father with Anthony Hopkins, but not really in the mood for something that is ultimately a finely made movie, but is slow-moving.
I know I sound like a 10 year old.

I would say if you genuinely liked the last movie, this is more of the same. I thought the last one, Jigsaw, was pretty awful and not in a "but really enjoyable way" like a lot of these movies, I just came away with a bad taste in my mouth.

Spiral though is worse again, while the story is equally as dumb on-paper, the acting and direction is shockingly sub-par and very amateur, the whole film feels like a low budget episode of a TV show. There's zero character development, zero chemistry between characters, nothing whatsoever, it just stumbles from scene to scene and you don't care about any of it.

I did think Saw 3D was sort of alright if you can make your peace with the absurdity of it, and same with the one before that, Saw VI I think, the one about the health insurance.

Watched it. I think you were a little harsh. But you're not too mark off the mark. It's a bit of nothing really. I wouldn't rate it nearly as good as any of the Saw films.

Chris Rock must really love the sound of his shouty voice.
