Especially not with your grease palms!

Good to add context. Don't touch the glass part of the bulb, because your hands have oils on them, which the heat of the bulb will radiate onto and overheat the bulb... then pop goes the bulb.

Do you ever do any of this research yourself? Google it perhaps?

    I echo bazzs sentiments
I'm starting to think your intentionally taking the piss with these threads.

Thought it was about maintaining your fiesta so it would last longer.

One thing I would definitely do is to investigate and fix any signs of starting rust. That's what normally kills Fords of any age. Your Fiesta is definitely one of them. Start by thorough cleaning of wheel arch lips and by removing with wheel arch liners to see if there are are any sighs of impending rust there. Waxoyling the sills next summer when weather has been dry for a while would also be high on my list.

Discussion is one thing, but answering every single question that can be Googled or checked in the manual gets really tiresome.

+1000, though I'd personally use the Bilt Hamber wax as it's far easier to work with and apply and gives better protection too. Then again if the OP needs more handholding than some with very basic items like bulbs, pumping wax into sills and wheelarches might be beyond them.

Cool, didn't know you can rust proof, but most cars will rust anyway if its more than 10 years old.

However, my work is close to the harbour and if it's very windy the waves will smash on the rocks and the sea water sprays right through the car park.

Yeah extra rust protection is a major plus.

Op you need to calm down. It is a 2008 fiesta that is worth nothing but is driving just fine.

Who cares if there is a little rattle there and a little squeak there. It's a fiesta, not a mustang. If the car is driving OK then it is OK. Don;t be talking about replacing shocks or brakes or this, that or the other just because you have a feeling or just to be sure. Don't do anything to it until it is actually necessary to do so - and that is when the NCT tell you you need to do it.

The only thing I would ever change on my own initiative without being told by NCT is the occasional oil change, coolant and a timing belt. Everything else including tyres, the NCT will tell you if you need it. Some people here don't like that approach but it is an approach that guarantees the cheapest motoring and whether they like it or not, the vast majority of Irish cars are maintained on that kind of NCT led basis.

And you don't need those silly LED headlights. A bog standard bulb for a fiver in any car shop will do just fine.

Drive it on like a bastard until it can't pass an NCT at a reasonably cheap cost anymore and then ditch it and buy another cheap car on Donedeal for small money.

you are putting way too much thought into this. Relax a bit. If the car needs attention, it will let you know.

I can't help it, it's my first car ever and the car brought me to places and I passed my driving test with this car, 4 times did the test, previous test I failed on I used my mother's car and ISM car.

It really is a legend car.

Ah here, will ye calm down.

You'd coudl look into the cost-benefit of 3000 mile oil changes. The saving made by, possibly, making the engine last a bit longer could be eaten up several times over by the cost of those ridiculously frequent oil changes. I hate it when people come out with this change the oil every month crap.

Every 10,000 miles is plenty. I have often let my car go 20,000miles between oil changes and I've never had a problem. realistically ,crankshaft bearings only go very rarely in small petrol engines and that is usually due to oil starvation.

Well you passed the test, so it is not like you need to do the test in it again, is it?

You need to take a few deep breaths, relax a bit and stop over thinking this whole thing. Do you have any anxiety issues elsewhere in you life? Is it common for you to overthink things in general? If so perhaps you'd be better off talking to your GP or a counsellor rather than amatuer mechanics.

All you need to know about the car is this - if a part is wore out or broke and needs to be replaced, the car will let you know of it.....because it won't work.
That is the only diagnostic strategy you need for a 12 year old fiesta.

Well every month or so would be totally daft alright TBC. Personally I've always gone on the every 4000k or once a year whichever comes first.

I only ever change the oil in advance of the NCT, regardless of high or low milage. And even then, it is only for the purposes of possibly aiding in keeping the emissions within limits.

I've had cars in my family that have ran on basically old oily sludge for years on end and never have I come across a failed bearing. Something else always kills them off before the major internal components fail.

I have to agree with 'TheBoyConor' regarding the maintenance on the old Fiesta.

All I can say about Fiesta's is drive behind a MK 1 and smell that Petrol from the exhaust.

    What utter ****e advice......

A car is tested once a year or two depending..... Just because it passes on that particular day doesn't mean the tyres are perfect until the expiry date.

Bulbs blow on the way home from the test, Sure be graaaaaand until the next test.

Brake pads need replacing, but sure it has NCT!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,278 ✭✭✭TheBoyConor

Of course, some obviously blown or worn items will need replacing before the NCT like bulbs, badly worn brakes etc, but as for things like shocks, bushings, exhausts etc, they will in most cases be able to struggle on until the NCT make you change it.

As I said, a lot of people on this forum dont like the approach, but I don't think you can deny that a very large portion of the cars in ireland are maintained on a purely reactive basis like this.

Sure look at the amount of people that give out and complain that they failed on their tyres when there was debatably 1.7mm of thread left in them.

When measured in terms of economical running costs, robustness and reliability, the 2008 Fiesta will outperform that BMW hands down. That BMW will break your heart on stupid faults, expensive repairs and will drink petrol. Not to mention the crazy motor tax.

And remember, you have your fiesta and it has a good lot of new parts fitted. You'll have to buy that BMW before you go anywhere in it, and you have no idea what kind of problems may be lurking under the surface. Your fiesta has more or less proven itself. I know which car i would rather trust.
