Queen get my vote. Truly a timeless song that never tries down through the years. It's got a little bit of everything in it and I just love Queen.

    Space Oddity
    Bohemian Rhapsody

Both against decent songs, however both are more than just songs. They created something so unique, so incredible. Sure they're overplayed, but they're overplayed because sometimes nothing else can do what they do

So this still holds. Both are incredible and it's a really tough call. My gut says Space Oddity. I just love it, and it tells a story so beautifully

Definitely Queen for me, I remember Bohemian Rhapsody when it featured in the car scene in Wayne's World and it was really big in school.
Still love Queen to this day.

Bohemian Rhapsody - Would probably make a final of all time songs and Space Oddity while a great song just isn’t as great and isn’t even a 70s song.

Must admit I nominated it having looked down the David Bowie discography on Wikipedia. It was there for 73 and I didn't notice it was a re-release. If I'd known I'd have put something else in. I'm sure I wasn't the only person though. And now that it's there I'm voting for it :p

    Well that's all folks!!!

    Bohemian Rhapsody 12 - 4 Space Oddity

I'm sure it was no great surprise that Bohemian Rhapsody ran out the winner in the end, but I think it is a worthy winner. I discovered a few new (old) tunes along the way, and found out the names of ones I never knew the names of. Thanks for all the voting.

Yep - unsurprising but thoroughly deserving

Thanks for running rainbowtrout, great effort :)

ya looking at the three completed competitions now, Nirvana and Queen are obvious choices to be there or thereabouts. Where as the 80s one was a bit of a surprise all round.

Thanks rainbowtrout for all the effort. Definitely some upbeat tunes to complete a 70s spotify playlist!

A great winner, not really surprising.

Thanks for the great work RBT, really enjoyed following and found some new songs along the way.

Worthy winner. Thanks for running the show, Trout.

Didn't throw in any nominations meself but enjoyed voting.

Good competition that, even if the winner was hardly a shocker. Thanks for running it rainbowtrout, you played a blinder, especially considering how fast the thread was going at times.

Thanks for all your hard work, rainbow xxxx

Was it as good for you as it was for us?

Yes it was actually. I was wondering if I'd feel conflicted not being able to vote on certain matches, but I was so busy keeping track of them, that it didn't arise.

So I was surprised to see Space Oddity make it to the final ahead of Heroes/Life on Mars. Life on Mars would have been my own preference. Incidentally Bohemian Rhapsody only had two nominations, I presume as everyone was expecting someone else to nominate it. I was wondering for a good few days when the nominations were coming in if it would get any!

I think Abba, while not everyone's cup of tea suffered a similar fate to Radiohead in having so many nominations, that there wasn't the same desire to see a song advance as they still had others in the race. And as was pointed out Dancing Queen was not nominated at all.

So anyone up for a 60s competition?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,679 ✭✭✭✭Tauriel

So anyone up for a 60s competition?

I would definitely need the help of Google for a 60s competition, it's a number of decades before my time.

So anyone up for a 60s competition?

Yep, have been having a little think about who I'd nominate for a few days, if there were a '60s comp. There are some classics I'd love to put forward... and then I'll be just as frustrated as I was in this comp when they get voted out in favour of something far interior... :D

A few of my 70s contenders were actually 60s. I’d submit a list again.

I wonder if we ran these contests yearly, would opinion change much?

Unless last year's winner was excluded for one year at a time....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,411 ✭✭✭✭rainbowtrout

I'd be happy to run a 60s one if there was interest.... unless somebody else would like to do it.

    Go for it RT :)

I'll have to do some serious research to find 10 decent 60s songs but will endeavour to do so :D
