You know the way usually a big shop or petrol station in some town will give guards free coffees? What's the story with this? Is it the case that the garda station has deal with the shop where they pay in advance, or do the shops just give them out free?

This wouldn't bother me either way. I'm just interested.

They like having the gards around

The coffee doesn't cost the shop much to give away

If they don’t get their free stuff there can be “delays” in Gardaí getting to the shop in the event of a robbery.

Always a smart business “move” to keep them onside.

Free coffee means guards always around means less likely for shop to be robbed.

    That’s the general consensus anyways.

They just give them out free because the guards have a tough job and a free coffee doesn't cost the petrol station anything. Plus, not a bad idea to make the local Garda station like you.

Then how come you don't get guards who insist in paying for it... as a matter of principle.

Don’t know, pop into the Foxhunter Texaco and ask around, place is always full of guards.

Are you jealous of the handsome men in uniform getting free coffee? Diddums. :(

**** I'm sure the women all have lovely bottoms too, but I tend not to notice.

If they come for their free coffee there's a fair chance they'll pick up something to go with it. Plus they would be more likely to visiting and shops at quieter times.

I was by the London eye, the day after the London bridge shooting when a local cafe gave 2 policemen free coffees who were in the queue behind us. Like to think it as a gesture of thanks and appreciation.

My local Apache pizza give the guards half price pizza.

Is that a nationwide deal or just our local one?

But it's only "being nice" to guards, not anyone else.

Yes, but anyone else can't slap cuffs on you unless pink and fluffy

The local bakery will also drop cakes in to the station in many towns.

Not sure if they still get free entry to the local night club.

It's only right. The guards have enough shìt to deal with at work...scum, traffic accidents, suicides etc, so a free coffee is a nice little bonus for them.

Thanks and appreciation for what?? Doing their job!Do my job every day which affects millions of lives dealing with sick patient's and not once have i been offered a free coffee or tea. Guards think there above the law but the majority there a useless pack of ***** and before u ask i have asked them from numerous assaults on me and as usual theres feck all we can do. Why u think most guards have big bellys in ireland especially. Maybe different in the uk

Lots of people have tough jobs, concrete workers, fishermen, social workers, janitors or cleaning personnel who clean your offices and houses, when do they get free stuff for doing their jobs, just because someone picks a job in the emergency services they seem rise to hero status in the eyes of some, its a job, they picked it themselves and no amount of free coffee will make a tough job any different

So it's a bribe, more or less.

I think to be honest it is a copy cat action based on the Americans and how they now worship their firemen, cops, military.

Social media makes shop owners feel they have to do the same now here.

Or maybe they are cynical and like the free publicity.

I'd rather do any of those jobs than be called to the scene of a murder or suicide.

I also happened to be near the knife attack and shooting that day and there was an awful lot of police rushing to the scene. Yes, it's their job but also putting their lives at risk.
