    Hi

My Volkswagen Passat has just start to go from high gear say from 3rd in 2nd and so on. So I am in 3rd and Reeves are up enough and I change into 4th, it going in no problem through the gear stick but then it thinks it is in 3rd as up on the dash it say 3rd and the Reeves goes way up so if I take my foot of the gas for say 10 sec it fixes itself without me moving the gear stick.
Does anyone know what is causing this and how would I fix it or better to take it to a garage right away and would it be expensive.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Sounds like the clutch is slipping and needs to be replaced. What year is it and which engine?

Clutch replacement not too expensive on those as they don’t have a dual mass flywheel. You are probably looking at €500-600 or so from an independent garage.

Thanks for the reply, sorry one more questions, would u advise me to get it looked at right away or do u think I could leave it for a month so I could get the money together.

Why would the display show a different gear to the one it's in?

I think it's worked out on a combination of road speed and rpm.

Without seeing the car it's impossible to say. If the clutch is slipping badly (which it sounds like it is) then it probably won't last the month before letting you down altogether.

Drive it like a grandad, very little throttle. Drive it as little as possible and don't carry anything in it that adds weight
Might get you as far as a garage.
